KEEP YOUR

RECYCLING BINS

OUT, PLEASE!Starting September 24, recy-cling crews will begin install-ing Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) bar code on residential recycling carts.

During this time residents need to identify their cart with their house or apartment number and leave it out until 5 p.m. on their recycling day. This process is expected to take several months to complete and crews will post a hang-tag on the cart once the bar code instal-lation is done.

Beginning October 2, 2012, TFC Recycling crews will scan tagged carts and award points automatically to residents who register for Recycling Perks.

The new bar code technology also allows supervisors to monitor collection routes in real time and catch any missed customers; improving efficiencies and cus-tomer service.

THE PRESIDENT’S CORNERBy Art Allen

Happy Fall, everyone. Glad to see the hot weather has left us. But we have to remember cold weather is on the way. Lets hope the 75 degree weather stays for a long time.

There are positions on the Board that we are trying to fill for the upcoming year. Anyone wishing to become a Board member, please contact Harry Jones.

Cyndie and I went to the Neighborhood Building Neighborhoods meeting on September 22nd at City Hall. It was a showcase of what the City of Norfolk and other Civic Leagues are doing to get more resi-dents involved in their City and Civic Leagues. There were about 12 Civic Leagues that had their own tables set-up. They were displaying what kind of ideas and things they are doing to keep their Civic Leagues fun and exciting.

Its was great to see all the ideas that other Civic Leagues have going on. The City of Norfolk has ideas and we could also apply for grants to help us. There are so many things that we could start. One idea that has been brought to my attention involves Dog Walkers and their waste. Would the neighborhood like to see animal waste cans placed in the neighborhood? I know everyone tries to clean up, but with these cans it would make it a lot better for all involved.

We had our Annual Ice Cream Social during our Sep-tember meeting. It was changed a little this year. I would like to thank my son Adam and daughter Erin for helping serve and keeping things running smoothly. I would like to also thank them for setting up and the clean up afterwards.

After much deliberation, I find we need to change the way our Civic League meetings are run. There seems to be a need for a round-table type meeting. People are having problems hearing things with others trying to talk over them. Another item is the refreshments. Yes, everyone seems to like it, but we need some help. With Cyndie’s and my work schedule, we can’t stay late to clean and close the church. There are 2 ways we can help with this problem.

1. Get some members to clean up after the meeting and close the church.

2. Cut out the refreshments all together.

I will pass around a Clean-up/Sign-up Sheet at the October Meeting. Starting in November we will start the round table style meeting and hopefully will have refreshments

I also want to welcome our two new advertisers into the newsletter.

See everyone at the next Meeting. Art Allen

HOW DOES YOUR

GARDEN GROW?By Joyce Thompson

Great things to do now:

1. Plant (or move) trees, bushes, and other plants. They will have a chance to get settled in before severe weather.

2. Prune bushes and trees that have not yet set buds. Caution: if you cut off the buds on bushes such as camellias and azaleas, you will be cutting off the

Spring flowers. With that said, you can prune out dead wood any time.

3. Cool weather vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, onion and garlic can be planted now.

4. Clean up your flower and vegetable beds. Dead leaves and stems often harbor insects and insect larvae.

5. Prepare to move plants indoors if they might be damaged by temperatures under 55 degrees.

I'm pleased to report that one of our young residents potted his first tomato plant and carrots in a large pot donated by one of our generous neighbors. We still have several pots left, including hanging pots, so let me know if you can use them.

One of our neighborhood gardeners had great luck growing organic okra this year, and brought a large quantity to give away at our ice cream social.

Donated tomato plants, iris, and daylilies all found good homes in the neighborhood!

From other kind neighbors, we have just received donations of a potted Blackberry plant and several Trailing Stapelia (Carrion Flower). The Trailing

and exterior painting to new cat housing units, the Cen-ter has been working hard to make the city's shelter more inviting to visitors and provide better comfort for the animals receiving care.

Most of the work was done by the dedicated staff and volunteers, along with the funding of materials by the Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center. According to Barbara Hays, bureau manager at the Animal Care and Adoption Center, the entire cat adoption room has new state-of-the-art housing units, more art and graphics throughout the building and an updated lobby to improve customer traffic flow. The exterior was painted to make it stand out in what is largely an indus-trial area.

The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center just received its highest-ever marks from the State Veteri-narian during its annual inspection, with special remarks about the shelter's cleanliness and overall health of the animals.

If you're looking for a new addition to your home, why not check out the shelter first? The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center is located at 5585 Sabre Road in Norfolk, near the Janaf Shopping complex just

ADOPT-A-SPOTBy Harry Jones

We are going to have another great event of picking up trash at Military Gardens on Saturday - Oct. 13, 2012 at 8:30 a.m.

We will meet at St. Peters Church and get supplies that are needed to do our clean up area. We will clean up from the front of St. Peters Church around the corner of the feeder road and the two grassy and flowered areas out there. As your Group Leader for our Military Gar-dens, Adopt-A-Spot we need to keep up our end of the cleanup program that we signed up for as one of our EARNN projects. This event will help us to retain points needed and to get the park looking much better. If we do a little every month. it will not be very hard to keep it clean. We are in need of our neighbors to help us out. Come out and help us to make a better looking Military Park sight. If you can not come out this month, then maybe next month you can. Let's all help out. We will bring this up at our next monthly

SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES!By Art Allen

While Cyndie and I were at the Neighborhood Build-ing Neighborhoods meeting yesterday, we met with

Beth Bruner and Scott Mahone. They explained two programs that the City has to help with a major storm or emergency. With the older residents in the neighbor-hoods, I think this would be a great thing to have in place. It’s time to start getting involved in these programs so River For-rest Shores-Wayside Manor-Easton Place does not get left behind.

The first program is the Norfolk Fire and Rescue FREE SMOKE DETECTOR Program. This Program is open to all Homeowners. The service is FREE. All you have to do is call. They will work with you to set a time when they can come by your home.

The other program is CERT Training (Community Emergency Response Training). I met Scott Mahone yesterday. We had an 30 minute talk about what all is involved in this. Yes, I know we won’t get a lot of res-idents to do this, but if we could just get 3 or 4 - that help out so much.

They have a 20 hour training session the weekend of October 14th and 15th. Scott also said there will be more training sessions. I AM GOING TO GET TRAINED. But, then again, while 1 person will be helpful, I can’t do it all. WE NEED TO GET A HANDFUL MORE. Please, is there anyone that will help out and get trained?

If you want more information, please contact Scott Mahone at 441-5619 or via email at [email protected] YOUR NEIGHBOR WILL THANK YOU.

FALL IS IN THE AIR...

With the start of Fall, it is time to begin planning our annual Holiday Din-ner!!! We are hoping to have a great turn out again this year and to do so we will, again, need all of our neighbors to plan on attending as well as helping out for this event. There will be sign up sheets at the October 8th meeting for different things that each of us can do to help make this a wonderful success. As a reminder, to enjoy this Holiday Dinner each family must be a Civic League Member

Halloween: Ghosts, ghouls, clowns and witches, all the neighborhood children will be out for TRICK or TREATING on Wednesday, October 31st, let’s remember to turn our porch lights on so they know we are at home and ready for them to knock on our doors for store bought treats.

I want to take this moment and thank the three people who donated school supplies for Easton Preschool. With these 3 families’ help, we were able to supply a few notebooks, crayons, folders, pencils, rulers, glue and playdoh. These supplies were delivered to the school on September 24th. Again, thank you to the three wonderful families that took the time to help out our local neighborhood school.
