Making Sense of Call Numbers
• Taylor library uses LC (or Library of Congress) call numbers
• WY = nursing
But... just to make it confusing
• Print journals of the same subject are all shelved in the same section (all of W is together)
• But within the W section, journals are shelved alphabetically by title.

Literature Searching
1. Start with an area of interest
2. Construct your search statement
3. Select the best resource
4. Formulate search strategy
5. Perform search; evaluate your results...try again, if necessary
2. Construct your search statement
“I’m looking for current scholarly articles (past five years) about conflict resolution between
doctors and nurses.”
3. Select the best resource
Questions to ask:
1. What kind of information do I want?
2. What do I need this information for?
3. What subject areas does my question cover?
Match the resource to the information
• Nursing research articles
• Psychology review articles
• Management textbooks
• CINAHL
• Library catalogue
• PsycINFO
• SCOPUS
• MEDLINE
4. Formulate your search strategy
• How to complete a concept grid
1. Underline the key concepts in the question
2. Decide how the concepts will be combined together using AND and OR Boolean operators
3. Concepts to be ANDed go across the grid and concepts to be ORed go down the grid
Create a concept grid
“I’m looking for current scholarly articles (past five years) about conflict resolution between doctors and nurses.”
5. Perform the search
• Enter the search terms one at a time
• Search subject headings first
• Then search keywords
• Combine your synonyms first using OR
• Them combine the different concepts using AND
• Finally... apply limiters
And adjust accordingly.... If no results, try removing some terms... If too many, try adding more
Searching for your Scholarly Review Assignment
• Complete a concept map for a suitable subject for your assignment
• Conduct the search in either CINAHL, OvidMEDLINE, or SCOPUS
When you are finished, please don’t close your browser window or log off – we’ll be using these searches to work with RefWorks
