Lepidopterologica (SEL) and the National Museum of Natural History Sofia (www.nmnhs.com) invite all SEL members and those being interested to the 18th European Congress of Lepidopterology, to be held in Blagoevgrad, SW Bulgaria from 29 July to 4 August 2013.

Payment

Payment of the registration fees, accommodation (see below) and meals should be done at the same time as registration, by money transfer to the bank account of the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia, see website (www.ecl18.eu) for details. Banking costs are covered by the participants. Registration is only complete when payment has been received!

Parking space is abundantly available. Wireless internet is available everywhere in the University buildings and residence halls.

Blagoevgrad is a compact university city with two universities. Most people speak English, the official language of the American University. The city is situated near the Struma River at the foot of the Rila Mountains at an altitude of about 300 m.

Accommodation and meals The university hostels Skaptopara 3 and Skaptopara 2 on the campus are available for

Congress attendants and accompanying persons, and provide very good and affordable accommodation with single, double and triple rooms, all with private bathrooms. Skaptopara 3 is just a bit newer and better than Skaptopara 2, which is also reflected in the prices. In total there are 77 double rooms and 100 triple rooms plus 23 apartments. Those who prefer can stay in a hotel in town (see www.ecl18.eu), although the differences in quality will be small compared to the University accommodation.

Rooms will be reserved at a first reserved first served basis. Booking can be done together

with the online registration. If you want to share a double or triple room with other attendants, you can indicate that during registration.

All meals are also served at the campus and included in the package prices; a full board costs only € 24 per day (meals only), breakfast only is available for € 6 per day. It will not be possible to take meals if they weren’t ordered in advance.

limited number of days or do not want to book accommodation and/or meals. Students or members with financial problems can apply for support, if they present a

poster or talk.

Travel information By air: Many air carriers have daily flights to Sofia, the closest airport for the congress

venue. When booked early, cheap flights are possible from many European airports. Transfer from airport: Blagoevgrad is approximately 110 km from the Sofia Airport.

Private transport from the airport: Currently taxi prices are ca € 40–50 from Sofia Airport to Blagoevgrad. We recommend the official Airport operator OK supertrans taxi company, see www.ecl18.eu. Cars can be rented in Blagoevgrad for less than € 20 per day, more expensive at the airport.

By car: Sofia-Blagoevgrad (E-79); Thessaloniki-Promahonas-Kulata-Blagoevgrad (E-79); Skopije-Delchevo-Blagoevgrad.

By train: From Sofia central station (NOT the airport!) directly to Blagoevgrad, note that the last train departs 20:00h. From Thessaloniki (Greece) to Blagoevgrad.

By bus: Every 1–2 hours there is a public bus service from Sofia (NOT the airport) to Blagoevgrad. The last bus departs 18:00h.

Scientific programme We invite proposals for symposia and workshops preferably before January 1

st. Please

indicate if you are willing to coordinate the organisation of a symposium, and to approach potential speakers. Proposals should be send to the general secretary, Erik van Nieukerken ([email protected]) before deadline. We aim at a scientifically wide programme, covering not only systematics, faunistics and conservation, but also aspects of ecology, physiology, DNA barcoding, etc.

The SEL council has decided to start a student talk and poster competition, details to be announced.

Abstracts will be accepted only from participants who have registered (and paid!) on May, 31

st.

Social programme Welcome Reception: Monday, July 29 at the reception each participant will receive his

own bag with materials for the Congress and presents from our sponsors. Tuesday, July 30 at late morning the official opening of the congress will take place in the

main building of the American University in Bulgaria with welcoming speech and cocktail. Accompanying person programme: the preliminary programme includes tours to Sofia,

Melnik and the Rozhen Monastery and to Bansko Town with the added possibility of taking the cable car from Bansko to the Pirin Mountains. Tours can be booked individually when registering; also other attendants can book excursions of course.

Midweek Excursion to the famous Rila Monastery (www.rilamonastery.pmg-blg.com)

and Kirilova Polyana, a subalpine meadow deep in the Rila Mountains. Price € 20, lunch included.

The Congress dinner will be held in the local restaurant Vodenicata mehana-

vodenicata.com with folk music and dance. The price is € 20, drinks excluded (cash bar). A post-congress excursion (2 or more days) is planned to Melnik and Rhodopi (pending

on sufficient interest). The price including breakfast, dinner and accommodation will be € 80 per person. For the bus the extra cost will be € 20, it is possible to follow the excursion with your own car. The excursion will end both in Sofia or Blagoevgrad, please indicate your preferred point of exit on the registration form.

General information

Collecting Collecting in Bulgaria is no problem, and is possible before, during and after the Congress,

as well as during the excursions. No permit is needed when collecting for scientific purposes and outside natural reserves. It is possible to collect in a wide range of habitats in altitudes from close to sea level to 2300 m within one hour’s car drive from Blagoevgrad. Based in Blagoevgrad, it is very easy to visit the famous Prime Butterfly Areas Kalimantsi, Kresna Gorge, Malak Kozhouh, Melnik, Ograzhden, Pirin, Rila, Rilski Manastir, Skrino Gorge and others. Blagoevgrad is situated in the submediterranean area and at the same time on the slopes of

the highest mountain in the Balkans. Landscapes around are very divers, from

semimediterranean and arid landscapes to evergreen, deciduous and coniferous forests and subalpine meadows. Two rivers are passing Blagoevgrad – Struma South Struma Valley, which is a big river and Bistritza with springs high in the Rila Mountain. In general nature there is well preserved, Rila and Pirin Mountains are National Parks: Pirin National Park, Rila National Park with several natural reserves, most of the other neighbouring territories are NATURA 2000 sites and Prime Butterfly Areas www.nmnhs.com/butterfly_areas_bg which is evidence for their high biodiversity and well preserved natural habitats.

Climate and weather

Blagoevgrad is situated in a warm part of Bulgaria, the Mediterranean influence can easily be felt and summer temperatures rise easily to 40ºC (104 °F) during the day, with pleasant temperatures during the evenings. Light casual clothing should be preferred, but bring something warmer for the mountains, where the nights can be cool.

Money The Bulgarian currency is Leva with two Lev currently equalling one Euro. No other

currency can be used in the country; exchange from other currency is widely possible, but it is recommended to use banks or official money exchanges stations at airports. ATMs (Automated Teller Machines, or Cash Machines) are common in cities and most towns, but not in villages and rural areas. There are 39 such machines in Blagoevgrad, mainly in the town centre and also in the university dormitories. They accept Visa and Master card. Major credit cards are accepted in most stores and restaurants in cities and towns, as well as in most larger petrol stations, but often not in villages and rural areas. It is recommended that visitors carry a sufficient supply of cash.

Visa Bulgaria belongs to the European Union, so visitors from member states do not need visa.

Visitors from other countries should check visa requirements with their local Bulgarian embassy before registering.

Bezahlung

Die Bezahlung der Teilnahmegebühr, Unterkunft (für die verschiedenen Varianten s.u.) und Mahlzeiten muss gleichzeitig mit der Registrierung erfolgen. Die Bezahlung erfolgt durch selbständige Überweisung auf das Bankkonto des Nationalmuseums für Naturgeschichte Sofia, siehe Website www.ecl18.eu für weitere Einzelheiten. Die Überweisungskosten müssen von den Teilnehmern selbst getragen werden. Die Registrierung ist erst erfolgt, wenn die Zahlung in Sofia eingegangen ist!

Der gesamte Kongress findet an diesem Veranstaltungsort statt. Unterkünfte und Kantinen befinden sich unweit der Hörsäle, so dass die Teilnehmer sich rund um die Uhr ohne weite Wege treffen können.

Ein neuer Studentenwerks-Komplex mit einem Konferenzsaal für 300–400 Personen wurde erst kürzlich eröffnet. Parkplätze stehen reichlich zur Verfügung. WLAN ist überall in den Gebäuden der Universität und den Wohnheimen vorhanden.

Blagoevgrad ist eine kleine Universitätsstadt mit zwei Universitäten. Die meisten Menschen sprechen Englisch, die offizielle Sprache der Amerikanischen Universität. Die Stadt liegt in der Nähe des Flusses Struma am Fuße des Rila-Gebirges in einer Höhe von etwa 300 müNN.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung Auf dem Campus stehen die Universitäts-Hostels „Skaptopara 3“ und „Skaptopara 2“ für

die Kongressteilnehmer und Begleitpersonen zur Verfügung. Sie bieten sehr gute und preiswerte Unterkünfte mit Einzel-, Doppel- und Dreibettzimmern, alle mit eigenem Bad. „Skaptopara 3“ hat einen etwas höheren Standard als „Skaptopara 2“, was sich auch im Preis widerspiegelt. Insgesamt gibt es 77 Doppelzimmer und 100 Dreibettzimmer sowie 23 Apartments. Wer lieber in einem Hotel in der Stadt wohnen möchte, kann sich auf www.ecl18.eu über weitere Möglichkeiten informieren. Die Unterschiede in der Qualität sind jedoch klein im Vergleich zu der Unterbringung auf dem Universitätscampus.

Die Zimmer werden in der Reihenfolge vergeben, wie die Buchung durch die Kongressteilnehmer erfolgt (Motto: „ Wer zuerst kommt, mahlt zuerst.“). Die Buchung kann zusammen mit der Online-Registrierung erfolgen. Wenn Sie ein Doppel- oder Dreibettzimmer mit anderen Teilnehmern gemeinsam bewohnen möchten, können Sie dies bei der Anmeldung angeben.

Alle Mahlzeiten werden auf dem Campus serviert und sind in den Paketpreisen mit enthalten. Vollpension kostet nur € 24,- pro Tag (Mahlzeiten, keine Getränke), das Frühstück ist für nur € 6,- pro Tag zu haben. Es wird nicht möglich sein, an den Mahlzeiten teilzunehmen, wenn sie nicht im Voraus bestellt und bezahlt wurden.

begrenzten Anzahl von Tagen teilnehmen wollen bzw. die nur Unterkunft oder nur Mahlzeiten buchen möchten.

Studenten oder Mitglieder mit schmalem Budget kann auf Antrag an den Vorstand von SEL Unterstützung für die Teilnahme an der Tagung gewährt werden, wenn sie ein Poster präsentieren oder einen Vortrag halten (aktive Teilnahme).

Anreise-Informationen Mit dem Flugzeug: Viele Fluggesellschaften bieten täglich Flüge nach Sofia an; bei Sofia

befindet sich der nächstgelegene Flughafen für den Kongressstandort. Wenn Sie rechtzeitig buchen, sind günstige Flüge von vielen europäischen Flughäfen aus möglich.

Transfer vom Flughafen: Blagoevgrad ist etwa 110 km von Sofia entfernt. Das Unternehmen „Traventuria“ wird den Transfer der Teilnehmer zwischen Flughafen und Veranstaltungsort übernehmen. Sie können Ihre Fahrt online buchen unter: www.traventuria.bg/tourlist1.asp?product=HemiShuttle&lang=UK&

Privater Transport vom Flughafen: Derzeit liegen die Taxipreise für die Strecke vom Flughafen Sofia nach Blagoevgrad bei ca. € 40,- bis € 50,-. Wir empfehlen, den offiziellen Flughafenbetreiber „OK supertrans taxi company“, siehe www.ecl18.eu. Autos können in Blagoevgrad für ca. € 20,- pro Tag gemietet werden, am Flughafen Sofia sind die Preise höher.

Mit dem eigenen Auto: von Norden Sofia-Blagoevgrad (E-79); von Süden Thessaloniki-Promahonas-Kulata-Blagoevgrad (E-79); von Westen Skopije-Delchevo-Blagoevgrad.

Mit dem Zug: Die Fahrt ist von Sofia-Hauptbahnhof direkt nach Blagoevgrad möglich (ACHTUNG, nicht vom Flughafen Sofia!). Beachten Sie, dass der letzte Zug um 20:00 Uhr fährt. Ferner gibt es eine Verbindung von Thessaloniki (Griechenland) nach Blagoevgrad.

Mit dem Bus: Alle 1–2 Stunden gibt es einen öffentlichen Bus von Sofia (ACHTUNG, nicht vom Flughafen Sofia!) nach Blagoevgrad. Der letzte Bus fährt 18:00 Uhr.

Wissenschaftliches Programm Wir bitten um Vorschläge für Symposien und Workshops möglichst vor dem 1. Januar

2013. Bitte vermerken Sie, wenn Sie bereit sind, die Organisation eines Symposiums zu koordinieren und potentielle Referenten zu gewinnen. Vorschläge müssen fristgemäß an den Generalsekretär Erik van Nieukerken ([email protected]) gesendet werden. Wir beabsichtigen ein wissenschaftlich breites Programm anzubieten, das nicht nur Systematik, Faunistik und Naturschutz sondern auch Aspekte der Ökologie, Physiologie, DNA Barcoding, usw. beinhaltet.

Der SEL-Vorstand hat beschlossen, einen Studentenvortrags- und Plakat-Wettbewerb auszurichten, Details hierzu werden noch bekannt gegeben.

Kurzfassungen von Tagungsbeiträgen („Abstracts“) werden nur bis zum 31. Mai 2013 und nur von den Teilnehmern angenommen, die sich auch angemeldet und die bezahlt(!) haben.

Rahmenprogramm Registrierung vor Ort am Montag, den 29. Juli an der Rezeption: jeder Teilnehmer erhält

seine eigene Tasche mit Materialien für den Kongress und Geschenken unserer Sponsoren. Dienstag, den 30. Juli: Die offizielle Eröffnung des Kongresses mit Begrüßung und

Cocktail findet am späten Vormittag im Hauptgebäude der American University in Bulgarien statt.

Begleitpersonenprogramm: das vorläufige Programm für Begleiterinnen und Begleiter umfasst Ausflüge nach Sofia, Melnik und zum in der Nähe von Melnik gelegenen Rosen-Kloster sowie in die Stadt Bansko. Zusätzlich gibt es die Möglichkeit, mit der Seilbahn von Bansko in das Pirin-Gebirge hinaufzufahren. Die Touren können einzeln bei der Anmeldung gebucht werden. Die Ausflüge stehen allen Anwesenden offen.

Der Ausflug in der Wochenmitte führt zum berühmten Rila-Kloster (www.rilamonastery.pmg-blg.com) und nach Kirilova Polyana, einer subalpinen Wiese tief im Rila-Gebirge. Der Preis beträgt € 20,- (inklusive Mittagessen).

Das Kongress-Abendessen findet in dem folkloristischen Restaurant „Vodenicata“ (d.h. Wassemühle, siehe mehana-vodenicata.com) mit Volksmusik und Tanz statt. Der Preis beträgt € 20,- Getränke sind nicht inbegriffen (und müssen selbst bar bezahlt werden).

Die Exkursion nach dem Kongress („post-congress excursion“, zwei oder mehr Tage) ist in die Umgebung von Melnik und in die Rhodopen geplant (je nach Interesse). Der Preis inklusive Frühstück, Abendessen und Übernachtung wird ca. € 80,- pro Person betragen. Es ist möglich, an der Exkursion mit dem eigenen Auto teilzunehmen; Mitfahrer im Bus müssen





zusätzlich € 20,- bezahlen. Die Exkursion wird sowohl in Sofia als auch in Blagoevgrad enden. Bitte geben Sie zuvor Ihren bevorzugten Endpunkt auf dem Anmeldeformular mit an.

Allgemeine Informationen Sammeln

Das Sammeln (von Schmetterlingen) ist in Bulgarien kein Problem und ist vor, während und nach dem Kongress als auch während der Ausflüge möglich. Es ist keine Genehmigung erforderlich, wenn das Sammeln für wissenschaftliche Zwecke und außerhalb von Naturschutzgebieten erfolgt. Es ist möglich, in einem breiten Spekrum von Lebensräumen in Höhen von fast dem Meeresspiegel bis hinauf auf 2300 müNN bei einer Entfernung von ca. einer Autostunde um Blagoevgrad zu sammeln.

Von Blagoevgrad aus ist es sehr einfach, die berühmten „Prime Butterfly Areas“ Kalimantsi, Kresnaschlucht, Malak Kozhouh, Melnik, Ograzhden, Piringebirge, Rilagebirge, Rilski-Kloster, Skrino-schlucht und andere zu besuchen. Siehe hierzu auch www.nmnhs.com/butterfly_areas_bg.

Blagoevgrad liegt im submediterranen Bereich und gleichzeitig an den Hängen des höchsten Berges des Balkans. Die Landschaften in der Umgebung sind sehr divers, von submediterranen und trockenen Bereichen bis hin zu Laub- und immergrünen Nadelwäldern und subalpinen Wiesen. Zwei Flüsse fließen in der Nähe von Blagoevgrad vorbei: die Struma mit dem südlichen Struma-Tal, das ist ein großer Fluss, und die Bistritza mit ihren Quellen hoch im Rila-Gebirge.

Allgemein ist die Natur gut erhalten, Rila- und Piringebirge sind Nationalparke (Pirin National Park, Rila National Park), beide Parke enthalten mehrere Naturschutzgebiete. Die meisten der angrenzenden Gebiete sind NATURA 2000-Gebiete und so genannte „Prime Butterfly Areas“, siehe www.nmnhs.com/butterfly_areas_bg, was als Anhaltspunkt für ihre hohe Biodiversität und die Güte der natürlichen Lebensräume dienen mag.

Klima und Wetter Blagoevgrad befindet sich in einem warmen Teil Bulgariens, der mediterrane Einfluss ist

deutlich spürbar. Im Sommer steigen die Temperaturen tagsüber oft bis auf 40ºC (104 °F). In den Abendstunden ist die Temperatur hingegen angenehm. Leichte Freizeitkleidung sollte bevorzugt werden, bringen Sie sich aber auch warme Kleidung für die Berge mit, weil die Nächte dort recht kühl sein können.

Währung Die bulgarische Währung ist die Leva, es entsprechen derzeit zwei Leva ungefähr einem

Euro. Es kann keine andere Währung im Land verwendet werden. Der Umtausch von anderen Währungen ist weitgehend möglich, es wird empfohlen, Banken oder offiziellen Wechselstuben am Flughafen zu nutzen. ATMs („Automated Teller Machines“, Geldautomaten) sind in den den meisten Städten vorhanden, aber nicht auf den Dörfern und in ländlichen Gebieten. Es gibt 39 Geldautomaten in Blagoevgrad, hauptsächlich im Zentrum der Stadt und auch in den Studentenwohnheimen. Sie arbeiten mit Visa und Master Card. Gängige Kreditkarten werden in den meisten Geschäften und Restaurants im Zentrum und in Städten sowie an den meisten größeren Tankstellen akzeptiert, zumeist jedoch nicht in Dörfern und ländlichen Gebieten. Es wird empfohlen, dass sich die Besucher ausreichend mit Bargeld versorgen.

Visum Bulgarien gehört zur Europäischen Union, so dass alle Besucher mit Wohnsitz in den

Mitgliedsstaaten kein Visum benötigen. Besucher aus anderen Ländern sollten die Visabestimmungen mit ihrer bulgarischen Botschaft vor Ort überprüfen, bevor Sie einreisen.

située très près du centre de conférence pour permettre les rencontres informelles tout au long de la journée. Un nouveau complexe d’études a été ouvert récemment et il comprend une salle de conférence pouvant accueillir de 300 à 400 personnes.

Le site est doté de vastes parkings pour accueillir les automobiles. L’accès à internet sans fil est disponible partout dans les locaux de l’université et les résidences.

Blagoevgrad est une petite ville hébergeant deux universités. Sur le campus, la plupart des

personnes parlent anglais, qui est la langue officielle de l’université américaine. Elle est située sur les rives de la rivière Sturma, au pied des monts Rila et se trouve à 300m d’altitude.

Hébergement et repas

Deux hôtels pour étudiants sont à votre disposition sur le campus, Skaptopara 3 and Skaptopara 2. Ils accueilleront les membres inscrits au congrès et les personnes accompagnantes dans des chambres confortables pour une, deux ou trois personnes, toutes disposent de toilettes personnelles. Skaptopara 3 est plus récent, ce qui justifie un prix légèrement plus élevé. Au total il existe 77 chambres doubles, 100 chambres triples et 23 appartements. Ceux qui préfèrent résider à l’hôtel en ville peuvent consulter le site www.ecl18.eu et réserver eux-mêmes ; ceci étant la qualité sera sensiblement équivalente à celle des résidences universitaires.

Les chambres seront réservées en fonction de la rapidité des inscriptions complètes ; les premiers inscrits seront les premiers servis. La réservation se fera via le service de réservation en ligne www.ecl18.eu . Si vous désirez partager une chambre avec une ou deux personnes, merci de l’indiquer lors de votre inscription.

Tous les repas seront servis sur le campus et seront inclus dans le prix "tout compris" indiqué ci-dessous. La restauration pour une journée complète s’élève à 24€ (petit






déjeuner+déjeuner+dîner). Le petit déjeuner isolé coûte 6€ par jour. IL ne sera pas possible de servir des repas s’ils n’ont pas été payés lors de votre inscription.

Par avion: plusieurs compagnies aériennes désservent quotidiennement Sofia qui est l’aéroport le plus proche de Blagoevgrad. Beaucoup de compagnies proposent des tarifs plus avantageux si vous achetez vos billets plusieurs mois à l’avance.

Transfert depuis l’aéroport : Blagoevgrad se situe à 110 km de l’aéroport de Sofia. L’agence Traventuria organisera le transfert des participants entre l’aéroport et le lieu du congrès. Vous pourrez acheter vos billets sur leur site internet à :

Programme scientifique

Nous vous demandons de proposer vos sujets pour des symposiums et des ateliers de travail (workshop) avant janvier 2013. Merci d’indiquer si vous désirez coordonner l’organisation du symposium et faire votre affaire des contacts avec les conférenciers potentiels. Vos propositions devront être envoyées au Secrétaire général, Erik van Nieukerken ([email protected]) avant cette échéance. Nous visons un programme scientifique très large qui traite non seulement la systématique, la faunistique et la protection, mais aussi l’écologie, la physiologie, les études d’ADN, etc, concernant les Lépidoptères.

Le Conseil de la SEL a décidé d’organiser une session pour les exposés faits par des étudiants et une compétition de posters. Leurs modalités seront précisées ultérieurement.

Les résumés seront acceptés et publiés uniquement pour les participants qui se seront inscrits (et auront payé) au plus tard le 31 mai 2013.

Programme officiel Réception de bienvenue le lundi 29 juillet. A la réception chaque participant recevra une

sacoche avec les documents pour la partie scientifique du congrès et des cadeaux des sponsors. Le mardi 30 en fin de matinée, l’ouverture officielle du congrès se tiendra dans le bâtiment

principal de l’Université américaine de Bulgarie avec le discours d’accueil et un cocktail. Programme pour les accompagnants Le programme prévoit une visite de Sofia, de Melnik, du monastère de Rozhen, de la ville

de Bansko, dans laquelle une option s’offre de prendre un téléphérique pour les Monts Pirin. L’excursion peut être réservée individuellement au moment de l’inscription. Cette possibilité est offerte aux autres participants.

L’excursion du 1

er aout au monastère du Mont Rila (www.rilamonastery.pmg-blg.com) et

à Kirilova Polyana, prairie subalpine au cœur des monts Rila est proposée pour 20€ (déjeuner compris).





Le dîner de gala du congrès aura lieu dans le restaurant local Vodenicata (mehana-vodenicata.com) dans lequel vous mangerez en musique et pourrez danser. Le prix du dîner est de 20€ et n’inclus pas les boissons qui devront être payées séparément au bar.

L’excursion post congrès (2 jours ou plus) vous propose de découvrir Melnik et les Mont Rhodopes (suivant l’intérêt des participants). Le prix fixé de 120 à 80€ comprend les repas et l’hébergement. La location d’un autobus entrainera une majoration de 20€ par personne, mais il sera possible de suivre l’excursion avec son propre véhicule. L’excursion s’achèvera à Sofia ou à Blagoevgrad, suivant ce que vous aurez indiqué dans vos préférences comme terminus, lors de votre inscription.

Informations générales

Prospections Aucune restriction à la prospection et à la capture de Lépidoptères, aussi bien durant

qu’après le congrès. Aucun permis n’est requis lors de prospections à finalités scientifiques, en dehors des réserves naturelles. Vous aurez accès en une heure de voiture depuis Blagoevgrad, à un vaste choix de biotopes allant du niveau de la vallée à 2300 m. Depuis le lieu du congrès vous pourrez aisément visiter les sites prioritaires pour la conservation des lépidoptères, comme Kalimantsi, les gorges de la Kresna, Malak Kozhouh, Melnik, Ograzhden, Pirin, Rila, Rilski Manastir, les gorges de Skrino etc. Voir www.nmnhs.com/butterfly_areas_bg.

Blagoevgrad combine à la fois une situation dans un paysage subméditerranéen et dans les

hautes montagnes des Balkans. Les paysages des environs sont variés allant du semiméditerranéen aride aux forêts caducifoliées ou de conifères, puis aux prairies subalpines. Deux rivières traversent Blagoevgrad, la plus grosse est la Sturma et l’autre la Bistritza qui prend sa source très haut dans les monts Rila.

En général la nature est bien préservée dans cette région. Les Rila et Pirin constituent des

parc nationaux, Pirin National Park et Rila National Park, comprenant plusieurs réserves naturelles. Les alentours de Blagoevgrad recèlent beaucoup de sites classés Natura 2000 ou habitats de première importance pour les Papillons (cf : www.nmnhs.com/butterfly_areas_bg) ce qui souligne leur intérêt sur le plan de la biodiversité et de la bonne conservation des milieux naturels.

Climat et météo Blagoevgrad se situe dans la partie chaude de la Bulgarie, aux influences méditerranéennes

marquées, si bien que les températures de l’été peuvent s’élever facilement à 40°C (104°F), durant la journée, ménageant ainsi de confortables températures en soirée. Des tenues légères sont donc appropriées. Il est toutefois nécessaire d’apporter des vêtements plus chauds si vous souhaitez aller en montagne où les nuits sont plus fraîches.

Devises

La monnaie bulgare est le Leva. La parité est sensiblement de 2 Lev pour 1€. Aucune autre monnaie ne pourra servir de paiement, mais les possibilités de change sont répandues. Il est toutefois recommandé de faire le change dans des banques officielles, en ville ou à l’aéroport. Les distributeurs de billets sont répandus dans les villes, mais inexistants dans les villages et les zones rurales. La plupart des cartes de crédit sont acceptées dans les magasins et les restaurants des villes, ainsi que dans les stations-services. Elles ne pourront être utilisées dans









les villages et zones rurales. Il est donc fortement recommandé de disposer de suffisamment d’argent en cash pour régler vos différentes dépenses.

Visa La Bulgarie fait partie de l’Union Européenne, les visiteurs des états membres sont

dispensés de visa. Les citoyens des autres pays doivent obtenir un visa de l’ambassade de Bulgarie de leur pays d’origine avant de s’inscrire au congrès.

Denver – July 2012 Joint Meeting of the Lepidopterist’s Society and the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica

Over the last decade or so an increasing number of members of both the Lepidopterist’s Society and the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica have regularly been attending meetings on both sides of the Atlantics without any formal invitation. Finally, the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Lepidopterist’s Society was announced as the first combined meeting with the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica. Although the distance undoubtedly prevented many Europeans from attending the congress, a representative group of SEL members crossed the Atlantics to join the initiative, which included participation of SEL Council Members in the LepSoc Executive Council meeting.

The logistics of the congress was efficiently organized by a team led by Frank Krell from

the Denver Museum of Nature and Science where most of the official events took place. Most of the attendees were accommodated in the Red Lion Hotel which provided extra possibilities for interactions. In addition, more than ten parallel field excursions offered many opportunities for exchanging entomological experience.

Our Society council was represented by Gerhard Tarmann, Erik van Nieukerken, Willy De Prins and Joaquín Baixeras and they all were invited to share the LepSoc Executive Council meeting where points of interest for both societies were identified, including the possibility of organizing a future world congress of Lepidopterology. Our president was invited to give a presentation of SEL at the banquet and encouraged the audience to continue the participation in European events including the next congress in Bulgaria, and to visit the SEL sites.

But the attendance was not restricted to Europe and North America. Although some of the

presentations had a local “flavor” for such an international audience, the mixture of styles and ideas resulted in an enriching atmosphere in which attendees from distant countries such as New Zealand and China felt comfortable contributing a vast array of subjects. More than 70 talks and posters were presented including symposia and special sessions on host-plant interactions, Lepidoptera inventorying and monitoring, global change and conservation, as well as a whole day satellite workshop on Tortricidae. The program was completed by an invited lecture by Don Lafontaine on Holarctic Lepidoptera, and a general discussion on the current developments in Zoological Nomenclature led by Frank Krell in which the controversial on gender agreement took up most of the discussion. Sixteen European participants ensured a sample of presentations on initiatives on our continent. Special mentioning should go to Finish Mari Kekkonen who was runner-up in the student competition.

The importance of the continuous effort to attend to both SEL and LepSoc meetings, as well as other emerging Lepidoptera meetings in Latin America, Asia and Africa cannot be emphasized enough as this encourages increasingly rapid exchange of ideas on Lepidoptera research all over the world.

XXIVth International Congress of Entomology in Daegu, South Korea

A number of SEL members, including myself, recently attended the International Congress

of Entomology (ICE) in Korea. The congress was held in Daegu, the fourth largest Korean city, in August of this year. Our Korean hosts did a fantastic job organizing such a large event (well over 2000 participants) and made us all feel very welcome.

As has become a tradition at the ICEs, there was an all-day Lepidoptera symposium co-

organized by Sowoon Cho, Akito Kawahara, and Thomas Simonsen. There were twenty-three speakers in the symposium, representing nine countries and including presentations from PhD students and postdocs, as well as more seasoned lepidopterists. Notably, more than one third of the presentations were from SEL members!

In this symposium we had a chance to hear about the newest advances in the study of

Lepidoptera from various corners of the world, focusing mainly on their phylogenetic relationships and what can be learned about the evolution of Lepidoptera with trees in our hands, but also on ecology and behaviour.

In other sessions and symposia held at the congress perhaps one of the hottest topics was

phylogenomics – using genome-size datasets for elucidating phylogenetic relationships, with some datasets with over 800 genes.

On one of the evenings during the congress, we had an all-lepidopterists dinner, with more

than 50 people in attendance. It was clear that all who were present very much enjoyed this event both because of the excellent Korean food that was served as well as for having a wonderful opportunity to socialise with so many lepidopterists at once.

Some of the SEL members took time for collecting during and after the congress and

perhaps we shall hear about their findings at the SEL congress in Bulgaria next year. The next ICE will be held in 2016 in Orlando, Florida, USA, and it will be co-organized

together with the Entomological Society of America. It will likely be a huge event – the expected number of attendants is over 6000.

Afrotropical Lepidoptera workshop, Ghana, November 2011

This workshop, the first of its kind in the Afrotropical Region, promoted jointly by SEL

and the Lepidopterists’ Society of Africa was attended by people from many countries: Belgium 1, Czech Republic 2, Denmark 1, Germany 2, Ghana 1, Hungary 1, Liberia 1, Norway 2, Russia 4, South Africa 4, Sweden 1, United Kingdom 4.

We were met in Accra and driven in a Land Rover and minibus through heavy taffic to Cape Coast, some five hours. Hans Cottage Botel was an adequate place to stay with twin rooms, a conference hall and a swimming pool. Other residents included crocodiles - reputedly friendly ones!

Sessions were held with a variety of presentations varying from barcoding and phylogeny to faunistics and data base programmes. These covered butterflies, macro- and micro- moths.

Interspersed were trips into Kakum National Park which has a canopy walkway amongst the rainforest. These included light trapping at night when techniques of different nationals could be compared.

After the close of the formal session the majority of participants embarked on a field excursion. We had a long and rough drive to near an arboretum, after a night in a hotel butterfly enthusiasts were pleased with the number of species observed, determination being ratified by Torben Larsen. Then we drove further east to some hills in the Volta district near the border with Togo to a hotel called Mountain Paradise at Biakpa. Further fieldwork was carried out by day and night in slightly less hot and humid conditions than at lower altitude. After three nights we drove back to Accra, another five hour drive. Within an hour of the airport the Land Rover broke down and some feared they were going to be separated from their luggage! However Szabolcs Sáfián who had organised the whole venture, with the help of some Ghanaian colleagues, managed to commandeer another vehicle which saved the day. A few members had one further day and night in the field not far from Accra.

As with most such ventures many exchanges were made informally and new friendships established. Our thanks to Sáfi and Ghana.

New SEL representative for Italy

Carlo Matessi became a member of SEL in January 2011 and offered to be the local treasurer for the society in Italy, seeing that the office was vacant. Before retirement in 2007, he was Director of Research at the Institute of Molecular Genetics (IGM), of the Italian National Council of Research (CNR), in Pavia, working on mathematical models of biological evolution and behavioural ecology. On retiring, he turned to his juvenile love by starting a scientifically sound collection of european butterflies. Although he is not an expert in any aspect of Lepidopterology, he is determined to learn in the years to come.

New SEL representative for The Netherlands Hans Coene, from 1976 a member of the SEL was recently invited to be the local

treasurer for the Society in The Netherlands. Before his retirement in 2004 he was a specialized pedagogue at an Institute for Education of Hearing Impaired and Deaf Children in Amsterdam. From 1960 he is interested in studying Palaearctic Lepidoptera by starting a taxonomic based collection of both West and East Palaearctic Rhopalocera. Since a lot of years he is a visiting contributor of the Lepidoptera collections of the ZMA museum (Amsterdam) and more recently of the collections of NCB Naturalis, Leiden, The Netherlands.

the issues appear far apart, it means that members are often informed relatively late about events or other news. The website www.soceurlep.eu/ is another way of communication, but also often not very up-to-date.

The council wants to improve this and maintain a better contact with membership through

a more regularly updated website. We have started with this process, and a small committee in the council will work this out. Members with ideas, please mail Erik van Nieukerken ([email protected]) with suggestions.
