Hazelwood, Scribner, and Highland Hills Middle School have all been recognized with “A” ratings. And, in addition to that achievement, they have also been recognized as a part of National Forum’s “Schools to Watch” list. Out of the 282 schools in the state of Indiana, only 13 of them have been recognized as Schools to Watch, and we have three right here in New Albany Floyd County. To be recognized on this list, each school must go through a tedious application process, and demonstrate their dedication to the list’s four criteria: organization, responsiveness to adolescent development, social equity, and academic excellence. Being recognized on this list is an affirmation that our teachers and staff are working to give our students a quality education. DON’T FORGET: e primary election is May 3rd. In order to vote, you must be registered by April 3rd. Register online today by visiting indianavoters.in.gov. GRANT LINE ELEMENTARY RECOGNIZED AS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY To be named as a PLC means that our teachers and staff are working in collaboration with students to ensure that each student is committed to learning. On receiving this award, Grant Line Elementary Principal Kyle Lanoue said: “e teachers have worked really hard to make sure that teaching and learning is the focus. Every single student in this school, whether they are performing at a very high level, or a student that is struggling, it’s making sure that all of those students have the attention they need to be successful. And, it’s a reminder to those teachers that the dedication and the long hours that they’re putting in is worth it because, in the end, the students get what they need, and our focus on learning is maintained.” NAFCS District Newsletter February 19, 2016

KEEPING OUR SCHOOLS SAFERecently, a school safety in-service was held for school administrators, school resource officers, the Superintendent, and his cabinet. Nationally known school safety expert Kenneth Trump informed attendees of safety trends and the best practices to take in school safety. School safety is ongoing and continually evolving. We continue to look for ways to improve safety in all our schools, and this in-service was one of the many things we do to keep safety at the forefront.

TEACHERS GOT TALENTTeachers at New Albany High School helped raise money for the NAHS student scholarship fund during their second annual “Teachers Got Talent” event. There was a silent auction featuring art and jewelry created by the teachers, and the show included a variety of talents, ranging from music to comedy. The night was a great success, and earned $1,500 to be put towards student scholarships.

CHEERS FOR THE CHEERLEADERSCheerleaders at Floyd Central and New Albany High School have accomplishments of their own to celebrate. Both co-ed squads placed at the state competition last semester, with New Albany placing second, and Floyd Central taking first place. As the state champions, Floyd Central went on to perform with the Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders during the Colts’ half time show. Last month, the New Albany squad competed at nationals in Dallas, Texas, and placed 3rd in the nation.
