NAFTCTurkeyoffice, incooperationwithNXTGroupofCompanies,had thepleasure to join the Agro Trade Mission from Istanbul to Izmir and Bursa.During the mission the participants had the opportunity to meet relevantprospective clients from the private and (semi) governmental spheres likeTIGEMstatefarms(partoftheMinistryofAgriculture&Livestock),Chambersof Commerce, sector organisations, dairy companies and relevant CattleBreedersAssociations.
This trade mission was an excellent opportunity to open doors into theawakening meat, dairy and livestock sectors in Turkey and strenghtencompanies’networks.

Turkeygivesabadexaminanimalhusbandry.Whiletheexportandimportfigurescreatedanxietyinanimalhusbandry, the Meat and Milk Association's 2017 Annual Sector Evaluation Report contained strikinginformation.Accordingtothereport,exportsoflivestockandcattlelivestockarecompletelyreset,whileimportsofcattlelivestockincreasedby4581%in2017,cattleimportsincreasedby72%.Breedingsmallcattleimportsincreasedby757%andbrokethenewrecord.Thereporthasverydetailedevaluationsonanimalhusbandry.Inparticular,theproductionandexportgrowthinBrazil.Turkeybrokerecordsinimportsinalmosteveryfieldofanimalhusbandry.Meatproductionisdowncomparedto2016.Themajorityofthecattleimportsthattookplacein2017werefromUruguaywith35percent,Brazilwith19percent,andCzechRepublicwith9percent.Turkeydid30%ofitscattleimportsfromGermany,19%fromtheCzechRepublic,and17%fromAustria.While50percentoftheimportationofslaughtercattleiscomingfromBrazilandSpain,nearly20per centof the imported small livestockarenot stud,ofwhich85per centareimportedfromAustralia.

ItisunderstoodthattheTurkishMinisterofAgriculturehasgiventhegreenlighttoprivatebuyers;butthereareotherobstacleswhichhavetobenavigatedfirst.Currencyissuesarebelievedtobeputtingahalttoproceedings.
Inaddition,itishopedthatthependinggeneralelection,duetotakeplaceinTurkeyonJune24willhaveapositiveeffectonsomeoftheseissues.

BordBia(TheIrishFoodBoard)figuresindicatethatthetotalnumberofcattleshippedtoTurkeysofarthisyearstandsat7,948head.Weanlings,storesandfinishedcattlehavemadeuptheseconsignments.
Thisisanincreaseof245cattlewhencomparedtothecorrespondingperiodin2017.
Some2,476weanlingshaveleftIrishshoresboundforTurkeysinceJanuary1,2018.Thisfigureiswellbackonlastyear,when6,199weanlingshadbeenexportedtoTurkeybythistimelastyear(down3,723head).
However,thenumberofIrishstorecattlewhichhaveenteredTurkeysincetheendoftheyearamountsto3,857head–anincreaseof2,370headcomparedto2017levels.
The number of finished cattle that have left Ireland destined for Turkish shores equals 1,615 head; this is the

TheDepartmentofFood,AgricultureandLivestockcompletedaninvestigationatArtvin'sHopa,Arhavi,Borchka,MurgulandKemalpaşadistricts,afterthedeathofcattle.Intotal,26cattlewerekilledinthefirststage:12inKemalpaşa,11inHopaand3inArhavi,duetothediseasewhichisknownas"FlowerDisease",alsoknownasLSD.Inoculationstudiesrelatedtobovineswerecarriedoutin5provinceswherequarantineapplicationwasinitiated.
TheWORLDsizeoftheorganicmarketreached105billiondollarsanditalsocontinuestogrowinTurkey.Form$15millionin2009to$800millionin2017.Thebiggestproblemwiththeorganicmarketistheissueofgrowingorganicfeeds,especiallyinanimalhusbandry.TheOrganicProductProducersandIndustrialistsAssociation’s(ORGÜDER)VicePresidentandCo-FounderofOrvital,MuharramDogannotedthattheyhavebeenexperiencingdifficultiesinfindingorganicfeedinTurkey.“Oneofthemostimportantrawmaterialsinanimalhusbandryissoya.Inourownbusiness,weneed4,000tonsofsoyperyear.Weproduce400tonsourselves.ThetotaldemandoforganicsoyinTurkeyisaround20thousandtons.TheamountproducedinTurkeyisonly1,000tons.19thousandtonsoforganicsoybeansareimported.Theamountpaidforthisamountis$15million.ThesizeoforganicfarminginTurkeyhasreached120million.Lookingatthis,the$15milliondeficitcreatesahugecost”.
