will the chlorine in swimming pool water affect nail polish colors?

Nail polish repels water, so the chlorine cant get inside to affect the color. Once the polish has dried, its OK to go swimming. Thats not the case with hair color, because chlorine can soak into hair.

If youre interested in doing the nails for a cover, you should e-mail [email protected]. Be sure to include your name, city, state, and some information about yourself, including how long youve been doing nails and what your specialties are. Also, be sure to include photos of your best work.Keep in mind that we shoot all of our covers in the Los Angeles area. And unfortunately, we dont pay for nail techs to come out, so if youre going to be in the Los Angeles area on a specific date, then include that in your e-mail. Likewise, if you can be available any time, let us know that. The only exception is our annual NAILS Cover Tech Contest, a photo competition in which we accept entries from all over the world, and the winning photo becomes the magazines January cover. That entry form is published annually in both our August and September issues. If we dont contact you at first, dont give up. As you learn new skills or have interesting ideas for cover looks, e-mail Hannah. You never know when you might have exactly what were looking for.

Most of our industry is focused on comfort, but when anyone goes to any job interview they should dress for success. They should also dress to impress; by this I mean dress as though you have the confidence to rep-resent the salon and its owner/manager so they can see your ability to be professional every day in the salon as well as represent your own style. Todays fashions for the salon do not fall under the business suit category but in fashion itself. We represent fashion and beauty, so it would make sense to dress fashionably and make sure your hair, nails, and makeup are beautiful. You should wear a comfortable dress shirt, pants/skirt, and dress shoes. Show style and your per-sonal beauty when you dress and you will be sure to impress during your interview. In too many salons today I see lazy, sloppy attire and wonder when they achieved the level of laziness that they portray to their clients. Top-rated salons have a dress code, whether it be a uniform or nice dress clothes. They didnt get to be top-rated or successful by letting their staff dress in jeans, shorts, and tank tops. You have to show your clients that you care about the way you look in order for them to be confident that you can create a look for them. So ditch the T-shirts and sweats at the salon, and dress to impress your clients. When they walk in and see you dressed like you have an important meeting they will be talking about you to others all day. Get your questions answered. This year, weve included a special section called The NAILS Hotline. In it, weve taken some of our most frequently asked questions (FAQ) and asked industry experts to answer them for you. From questions about style, business, health, and technique, to common questions about the magazine itself, weve got answers. In addition, many of the top product manufacturers have included their own FAQ in this section. Turn to page 85 to get the answers.

See how you measure up to the industry standards. NAILS has built a reputation of providing the most complete industry research available. We study the business to learn how things are being done currently and what trends are on the horizon. We are watching not only how big our industry is, but what youre charging for services, what you pay for booth rental, and where you buy products and advertise your services. NAILS Industry Statistics are used throughout the year by news agencies big and small, as well as by product manufacturers, who look for insights on how to market their products. Salon owners have told us that its our data that they bring to the bank when theyre putting together a loan application or looking for investors. See how you t into the bigger picture on page 44.

Refresh your knowledge of salon sanitation and safety. Properly cleaning your implements, pedicure spas, and your salon space is probably one of the most important things you can do to ensure you are keeping your clients safe and avoiding unnecessary salon nes. Flip to page 73 to make sure youre doing everything thats required in terms of keeping things clean at the salon.

Check in with your state board. We contact every state board each year to see if theyve updated anything relevant to the practice of nails, including the number of continuing education hours required, whether home and mobile salons are allowed, and reciprocity policies with other states. Use the end of the year as a time to see if any-thing has changed from last year, especially if youre considering a move to a new state or thinking about moving your business to your home. The State Board Directory starts on page 20.

Research a new service option. Havent yet added gel-polish to your menu and daunted by the number of options available? We have a listing of all of the top nail product manufacturers with key contact information. Use this to jump online and start your research. The Marketers Directory starts on page 126.

Sure I can be a bit, umm, obsessive when it comes to my lists and marking things off . But why dont you try keeping lists for yourself? Youll see just how much youve accomplished and hopefully your lists will help you stay on task in todays busy salon life. And if you want to share your lists with me, shoot me a picture of your actual to-do list and lets compare! You can reach me at [email protected].

    a to-do list

    [email protected]

I make endless lists (at work, at home, in the car) and get an almost obscene amount of happiness from checking things off my lists (I even draw my own check-off boxes on my lists). I reorganize the longer-term lists as they become overcrowded or as I work my way through them, and at any given time Im likely to have at least ve lists going.

The Big Book gave me lots of material for my lists. I actually have a completely separate to-do list for my Big Book tasks. Theres a lot of organization involved in preparing this special issue, lots of numbers that need to be checked and double-checked. Making lists helps me stay focused on all the little tasks that have to get done before the Big Book is ready for YOU.

In the spirit of my love for lists, I thought I would give you a to-do list of your own to help you get maximum bene t out of the eff ort weve put into The Big Book.

Every year we update the State Board Directory by calling, faxing, and e-mailing state boards directly. Material is based on their responses, website data, last years published information, and other public sources. Not all information could be confirmed directly by the state board before publication. Those states that did not verify their information are noted with a *. It is very important

that nail technicians be cognizant of their states guidelines and follow them to the letter for their and their clients safety. Use this guide to get in touch with your state board, check on regulation updates, and to compare your state with others. We suggest you consult the board directly before making any critical decisions like planning a move to another state.

Remember several years back when the planet formerly known as Pluto got downgraded from the Solar System? Scientists had discovered characteristics of Pluto that showed it was different than the other planets and different from how theyd looked at it previously so they reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet. As I was working on these statistics, I was thinking about Pluto, because weve discovered characteristics of the nail business that cause us to look at it differently.

For instance, we felt that the method we used to calculate market size was too narrow. We used to benchmark four key service categories: manicures, pedicures, acrylic full sets, and acrylic fills. Those were the four planets in our Solar System that defined our industry and theyd been the basis for 15 years worth of data collection. But how could we not include gels? And nail art? I guess my Pluto analogy is actually backwards: We havent dropped any planets in our Solar System; weve added new ones.

So this year, we expanded our review of all service categories to include gels, nail art, and we broke pedicures and manicures into two categories: deluxe and basic. And for the first time, we have data to answer some of the most frequent questions our editors get about how many of each service is done in nail salons.

Enjoy this years Big Book. And we hope you will use it.

    Cyndy Drummey

Unless indicated, most of the data in this years Big Book was derived from a readership study done by NAILS in October 2011. We had 1,471 respondents and weve used their responses to project these figures. We maintain proprietary methods to calculate market size, service income, and ethnic break-down. We welcome the opportunity to talk to our readership about these statistics in greater detail. We have more data than we can print, so please call us if you need something you dont find here. Also, if youd like to browse our statistical archive, go online at www.nailsmag.com/market-research.
