The Promise Shadow Drama

Working as a class or in teams, develop and perform a shadow drama. Write a narrativethat tells the story of the promise of the Messiah and of Jesus’ first advent to fulfill thepromise. Determine scenes from the story to illustrate as a human still-life shadow picture.Stretch a sheet tightly from the floor to the ceiling. Place a strong light (minimum of100 watts) on the floor behind the sheet. As the story is being read, students shouldstand between the light and the sheet, posing frozen in place during the entire timetheir picture is on stage. The light should be switched off while scenes are being changed.

As an alternative, find a passage of Scripture that tells of the promised Messiah. Eachclass or a team member chooses a scene he or she will illustrate with a single shadowdrawing. As the passage is read, students hold up their drawings at the appropriate time.

“Someday, I Want to Be That Gracious!”

Read the following story. Discuss your reactions on paper and compare with your

classmates.

The pleasant Friday morning sun promised a scorching day. My mom and I

chatted as she finished watering some flowers. A crash at the corner shattered the

morning stillness. Rushing across the street, we recognized the front car as that of

one of the youth pastors in our area. His new car had been rear-ended.

Frantically, the woman told him that she was fine and apologized for her careless-

ness. Her embarrassment was evident. After being assured that she was fine, he

sent her on her way.

“But Pastor, there are a couple of dents in your bumper. You let her go,

and your car is damaged,” I pointed out.

“I know, but this car will eventually suffer a few dents, so they might as

well start now. Besides, she is a church member. She knows I won this car and,

more important, I know I won this car. It’s mine only because of grace.” With

that he wished us a good day and was on his way.

“Someday I am going to be that gracious to someone,” I vowed.

Years later on a Friday afternoon I sat in our van while both tanks were

being filled with gasoline. Feeling satisfied that all my chores were completed

well before sundown, I pulled out a book to read while I waited. Suddenly some-

thing shook the van. Probably just the door on the gas tank, I thought. But it

happened again, and again. With the book still in hand, I curiously peeked

behind the van. Sandwiched between the large gasoline tanker and my van was a

small car. Approaching the driver, I began, “Excuse me, but every time you pull

forward, you are hitting my trailer hitch. It should only be a few more minutes.

They are filling the second tank now.”

34 Unit 2, Lesson 6

While the two young teenagers in her back seat hung their heads in

embarrassment, the driver explained that she had errands to run and not long to

complete them. About then, the tanker pulled away, and she was able to leave.

“I have her license plate number if you need it.” I looked up to see one of

my colleagues. “She was hitting your car!”

“It’s probably fine, but thanks! See you back on campus.”

Arriving at home, I shared the encounter with my family. “You should have

called the police!” “Did you report her to the insurance?” “Why didn’t you

report her for a hit-and-run!” After assuring them that the van was fine, I shared

the story of years before. “Today was the day I was able to be gracious.”

Months later I received a telephone call which began, “You don’t know

me, but you might remember me. I am the driver of the car that was hitting your

van that Friday. I would like to put my son in your school . . .”

Description

“The Love of God”

The love of God is greater farThan tongue or pen can ever tell;It goes beyond the highest star,And reaches to the lowest hell;

The guilty pair, bowed down with care,God gave His Son to win;

His erring child He reconciled,And pardoned from his sin.

CHORUS:

Oh, love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure—The saints’ and angels’ song.

When hoary time shall pass away,And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,

When men who here refuse to pray,On rocks and hills and mountains call,God’s love so sure, shall still endure,

All measureless and strong;Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—

The saints’ and angels’ song.—Frederick Lehman, 1917
