Prayer Loving God, we thank you for the gift of Your Son, God-with-us. May we be Love to all we meet, at Christmas and throughout the year. We make this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
The following students achieved fantastic subject study scores of 45 or above:
Natalie Cierpisz – Studio Arts, 47
Yasmine Athaide – Business Management, 47
Naomi Gregory – Outdoor and Environmental Science, 46
Livana Raczynski – Studio Arts, 46
Stephanie Lewis – Outdoor and Environmental Science, 45
I am pleased to share the following details of success from this fine group of Women of Ave:
22 subjects saw students achieve scores at 40+ - this is a significant increase from previous years.
Median Study Score – 32 30% of students achieved an ATAR above 80, placing them in the top 20% of students in the State.
In character and capacity, this has been a wonderful cohort of students. They have been superbly supported by the staff of the College, both this year and in previous years. We wish all students every success and happiness as they await their University offers in January.
A Christmas Reflection All families will receive an email extending our best wishes for this Christmas season. Included will be important information for the 2019 school year, which I ask all parents to be mindful of. I offer the following reflection for this final newsletter for 2019:
Child of Bethlehem, house of bread;
Man of Jerusalem, city of peace
You have loved us without limit or condition,
In our greatness and in our misery,
In our folly and in our virtue;
May your hand be always upon us
And may your heart be within us so that we, too
May become bread and peace for one another.
Amen (John Wheatley)
From the Principal Learning Excellence In closing the Academic year, it is with much pleasure and pride that we acknowledge the Class of 2018. The successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education is a significant milestone in the life of every student. For some it paves the way to tertiary study at their chosen University. For others, it leads to vocational education in the form of apprenticeships and training in specialist fields. Every student leaves Ave Maria College the better for their education and now emboldened to live and contribute within society, for the common good.
Many students achieved an outstanding result in the Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR). We congratulate the following students:
2018 College Dux Cindy Allen who achieved an ATAR of 98.3.
Cindy intends to pursue Science at the University of Melbourne, having undertaken Physics, Maths Methods, Specialist Maths, Chemistry and Literature at Ave Maria. Cindy’s study has confirmed her passion for Maths and Science and was enhanced by being able to pursue Physics at University level.
Congratulations to Julia Ellul – outgoing Clare House Leader who also achieved an outstanding ATAR of 97.25. Julia is a very versatile and talented young woman who, in addition to her leadership role was able to excel in her study of Health and Human Development, Global Politics, English, Further Maths and Biology. Julia is highly commended on an almost perfect score of 49 in Health and Human Development.
The following students achieved equally wonderful results, achieving an ATAR above 95:
Yasmine Athaide
Deanna Fimiani
Jade Zammit
We are delighted to congratulate Madeline Saxton, Year 11 2018, for achieving an almost perfect score of 49 in Legal Studies. Madeline’s studies at Ave Maria, along with early entry to university studies in Law, has ensured this early success and builds a very strong foundation for her VCE completion in 2019. Congratulations Madeline.

Teaching and Learning Leader Academic Awards I would like to extend my congratulations to all of our
Academic Awards recipients over the past week. Excellence
and Endeavour awards were distributed at final Year Level
Assemblies in the last week of Term. These awards
acknowledge the top performing students in each class and
those who have shown great growth and determination in
their learning. At our Academic and Community Awards
Night we also had the opportunity to acknowledge our
Subject Dux, Honour Roll and Year Level Dux recipients. The
hard work and dedication shown by so many of our students
is a testament to the fantastic learning environment we have
here at Ave.
Reports Semester Two reports are now accessible on the Parent
Access Module. You can download this report and previous
reports via Student Assessment on your daughter’s profile.
With the release of reports it is an opportune time for
students and parents to further engage in a conversation to
review the year’s work. The reports not only provide
feedback and a summary of performance, there are also the
work habits and a comment related to both student growth
and areas for improvement. These reports provide a
summation of the student’s capacity over an extended
period of time and set a bench mark from which to grow in
2019. If you have any questions about your daughter’s
progress or the information contained within her report
please contact the relevant subject teacher in the first
instance.
Parent Access Module (PAM) I would like to thank you all for the way in which you have
engaged with PAM this year and supported the
implementation of our new Learning Management System. I
hope it has assisted you in having greater access to track
your daughters learning progress and a further
understanding of ways in which you can support her. Prior to
the commencement of the 2019 school year you will receive
an email prompting you to re-validate the medical details for
your daughter via PAM. This will ensure we have the most
current information on file.
Students with invalid medical details will not be able to
attend excursions or camps.

letter. We congratulate all students who were recognised at this
event.
VCE Results The College is so proud of the graduating Class of 2018. With results released on Friday, we were thrilled with the success of many students.
Congratulations to all of our students who completed their VCE
this year. A wonderful achievement. We wish you well as you
now wait to find out tertiary offers in mid-January. We also take
this opportunity to congratulate and thank the VCE teachers for
their dedication and commitment to our students. Their success
is your success.

College and Parish Priest of St Monica’s, Moonee Ponds, was our
celebrant for the end of year Mass for Years 7 to 11 on Tuesday, 4
December 2018. Fr Tony spoke beautifully about us each being
an icon of God, spreading God’s love. As always, the Mass was
enriched by the singing from the Vocal Ensemble led by Mr
McLeod.
Venilale Stationery Collection Thanks to those who donated to this worthwhile cause. The
stationery will be shipped to Venilale over the summer holidays.
Reflection Christmas gathers up so many memories and so many feelings
and not all of them are happy. It can be an acutely painful time
for some as the pain of absence stands in stark contrast to the joy
of others. Christmas is the celebration of God-with-us, incarnate
love. And as much as love swells our hearts, love can also wound,
ask any parent. We put so much on one day, impossibly high
expectations, but love should be for every day. If 25 December
doesn’t go to plan, there are 364 other days to express our love in
tangible ways. Expressions of love to our nearest and dearest but
also expressions of Love whether in prayer, delight in God’s
creation or care for those in need. And be open to how Love can
teach you, every day.

Student Counsellor Vision Boards Vision boards are a creative way to display inspiring pictures,
words and quotes that represent you, your hopes and
dreams. They are a great way to remember short and long-
term goals and brighten up a teenager’s bedroom.
Your daughter may enjoy making a vision board over the
holidays. Creating a vision board for her room can serve as a
reminder and inspiration for the things she hopes to achieve
next year. Below are some simple steps for making a vision
board:
Materials:
Any kind of board. Maybe a corkboard or poster board from the hardware store. If possible, I recommend a pinboard or a framed corkboard.
Scissors, tape, stickers, pins, photos and old magazines with colourful pictures.
Instructions:
1. Create a list of goals you would like to achieve over the next 12 months.
2. Find pictures that represent your goals and inspire you.
3. Make a collage out of your pictures.
4. Add positive phrases or affirmations that represent how you want to feel.
5. Take a few moments to contemplate your vision board every day.
Your daughter may want to update her vision board from
time to time. As she continues to grow her aspirations will
too. On the other hand, the board may remain unchanged,
and become a chronicle of her dreams, growth and
achievements in the year ahead.

2018 Dante Alighieri Audio Competition This year, the Dante Alighieri Society Melbourne,
launched its inaugural competition titled “Dante Alighieri
Audio Competition” which required students to create a
2 minute radio broadcast advertising a new movie on
Dante, his life, works, or quirks! Dante was a 13th and 14th
Century poet, author and politician. However he was and
is still known as the ‘Father of Italian language’, hence a
very important historical figure in Italian society.
The aims of the competition were threefold. In the first
instance, students had to make an effective movie
advertisement that would be heard on the radio.
Secondly, the audio needed to highlight knowledge of
Dante Alighieri, and finally, the students needed to use a
good standard of Italian appropriate to their age group.
Furthermore, in order to enhance the presentation,
students could include music, sound effects or voice
overs.
The College is very excited to announce that Isabella
Dogovski and Alexandra Evans, both from Year 8, were
successful in being awarded First Prize. Everyone is very
proud of the fine work produced by these 2 students and
their achievement. Both students were presented with
their certificate and First Prize of $200 each, by the
President of the Dante Alighieri Society Melbourne, Dr
Dominic Barbaro AM, at the University of Melbourne on
Sunday, 18 November 2018. After the ceremony, Isabella
and Alexandra were also lucky enough to be interviewed
by Gabriella Gomersall-Hubbard, a journalist from the Il
Globo Italian newspaper, who was eager to hear about
their work.

Swinburne Junior Poetry Competition September Session Congratulations are extended to
students from Year 7 and 8 who
studied Italian and took part in the
Swinburne Junior Poetry
Competition, September Session.
Everyone performed well and
certificates of Honourable
Mention and Merit were awarded
to the participants. However one
student performed exceptionally
well and was awarded a prize for
her performance in the Non-
Italian Section. Alexandra Evans,
Year 8, was awarded 3rd place and
a $40 voucher.
We acknowledge the fine work, commitment and dedication of all
students who took part in LOTE competitions throughout 2018. We
look forward to them continuing to expand their
horizons in 2019 and beyond.

Academic and Community Awards Night The Academic and Community Awards Night (ACAN) is the annual celebration of achievement by staff, students and community of Ave Maria College. This event recognises and acknowledges excellence and high performance in a number of areas – College Spirit, Sporting and Cultural contributions, Community recognition and, of course, Academic Excellence.
In 2018 the academic award recipients included the Subject Honour Roll, for which the highest performers in each subject, in
each Year Level, are recognised. The highest performer, taking in to account all assessments – both formative and summative,
is award the Subject Dux. This year over 200 students were acknowledged for their academic success, a testament to the depth
of ability across the respective cohorts. Once again we acknowledged the top 5 students in each Year Level in the Year Level
Honour Roll. These students have excelled across a number of subjects, with consistently high achievement in both Semester 1
and 2. The Year Level Dux is awarded to the overall highest performer in each Year Level. Well done to all.
