1. What are the five Southeast Asian countries shown on the map?

2. What are the three largest cities shown on the map? How large are they? What are the

two smallest cities?

3. What is indicated by the top line of products for each country? The bottom line?

4. Which country exports the greatest variety of products today? What are those products?

5. How have Cambodia’s key exports changed since the 1920s? What about Laos?

6. Critical Thinking: Region Many countries are trying to shift from exports of raw

materials to exports of manufactured goods. Is that shift occurring in mainland

Southeast Asia? What impact might it have on the people there?

ACTIVITY With a partner or small group, find out more about the economy of one of

the mainland Southeast Asian countries. Prepare an oral report describing the state of

the nation’s economy, including its main economic activities, economic problems, and

prospects for the future.

Remember that economy is how people make money. Rather than an oral report, please make it a short report on the economy of your chosen economy. You could use a list to show those activities.

Diversity in the Philippines

The Philippines is a land of great ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity. Many different

groups are spread across hundreds of islands in the Philippine archipelago. Since the 1970s

the country also has been shaken by a Muslim rebellion on the southern islands. Look at

the map below, then answer the questions on the following page.

1. What five major islands or groups of islands are labeled on the map? In which group

are Cebu, Samar, and Leyte located?

2. Where are the cities of Manila and Davao? What is the approximate air distance

between them?

3. What major languages are spoken on Luzon? How is most of the northeastern coast

of the island classified on the map?

4. What three religious categories are shown on the map? Which category is most

common throughout the islands? Where do most Philippine Muslims live?

6. Critical Thinking: Place Why would the Philippines be a difficult country to govern?

How might those conditions contribute to the Muslim insurgency in the south?

ACTIVITY Look at books or magazine articles with information and pictures of the

Philippines. Imagine that you are visiting one part of the island. Design a picture post-

card with an image of the place you are visiting on one side, and write a short letter to a

friend about what you have seen and experienced on the other. Also design and draw a

picture of a stamp on your postcard that reflects some aspect of Philippine geography or
