Each of the CPAR projects described below have contributed in some way towards the achievement of the MDGs. Have a look! WATER AND SANITATION: Healthy Communities Program: CPAR is working to increase community access to safe water sources, to increase awareness about the importance of clean drinking water, and to improve household sanitation and hygiene practices through providing toilets and hand washing facilities. Safe Water & Sanitation for Children Under Five and AIDS-Affected Households: CPAR is supporting Village Health Committees, working to improve household hygiene practices, promoting the usage of pit latrines and improving access to safe water. CPAR is also constructing new water points and improved sanitation facilities (including pit latrines), and running educational events to encourage positive behavioural change relating to hygiene practices. Reducing Waterborne Diseases Among School Children: Through this project, CPAR is helping to mobilize school sanitation and hygiene committees, ensuring that children are using clean sanitation facilities and following best practices for improved hygiene. Our team installed pit latrines and hand washing stands, which also helps to improve environmental conditions by reducing the amount of waste and stagnant water on school grounds.

HIV/AIDS: Reducing the Burden of HIV and AIDS: In this project, CPAR is working with communities to prevent further spread of HIV and to help the most vulnerable to overcome the affects of HIV on their livelihoods and well being. CPAR provides access to protective materials, promotes access to voluntary testing and counselling, supports orphan-care centres, provides income-generation support for female heads of households and helps to establish community-level HIV and AIDS committees. FOOD SECURITY:

Community-Based Disaster Preparedness for Sustainable Development: CPAR is working with farming communities in the villages of Malili and Chinteche to increase their ability to withstand shocks to food production which result from recurring droughts. CPAR is supporting crop and livestock diversification, income generation activities and environmental rehabilitation work to help restore the productivity of agricultural land.

Putting Farmers First: At the core of CPAR’s approach are a series of practices that expand opportunities for farmers to lead competitive, value-added agricultural production and marketing efforts. With an emphasis on local innovation and

ownership, CPAR is working with rural farming communities to improve year-round food security by:

Case Study #2

Building Healthy Communities in Tanzania Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) is one of many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are working hand-in-hand with vulnerable communities in Tanzania to ensure access to clean water, adequate food, primary health services and a safe and healthy environment. Each of the CPAR programs described below have contributed in some way towards the achievement of the MDGs. Have a look! FOOD SECURITY: Healthy Communities Program: In this project, CPAR is working to improve the overall quality of life for villages in Karatu District through focusing in on environmental degradation, food production and reproductive health services. In the realm of food production, CPAR is supporting farmers to build their knowledge and skills in natural resource management, soil and water conservation, tree planting and low external input and sustainable agricultural practices.

Putting Farmers First: At the core of CPAR’s approach are a series of practices that expand opportunities for farmers to lead competitive, value-added agricultural production and marketing efforts. With an emphasis on local innovation and ownership, CPAR is working with rural farming communities to improve year-round food security by:

SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH:

Healthy Communities Program: In this project, CPAR is working to improve the overall quality of life for villages in Karatu District through focusing in on environmental degradation, food production and reproductive health services. In the realm of sexual and reproductive health, CPAR is assisting communities to effectively tackle issues such as family planning, early pregnancy, safe delivery, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). To address these topics, CPAR trains local village leaders to conduct education and awareness raising campaigns and events. We also engage teachers, students, local health workers, men and women in order to get the message out. WATER AND SANITATION: Rainwater Harvesting in Karatu Primary Schools: CPAR is working to improve the health standards of school children in Karatu district by providing access to safe water and sanitation facilities. CPAR has been working to establish rainwater harvesting tanks, hand washing stands and pit latrines in schools. In addition, CPAR organizes and provides training to student-led Rainwater Harvesting Committees so that the tanks will function sustainably. Finally, CPAR delivers training on improved health and hygiene practices in these schools alongside local health workers.

Case Study #3

Building Healthy Communities in Uganda Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) is one of many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are working hand-in-hand with vulnerable communities in Uganda to ensure access to clean water, adequate food, primary health services and a safe and healthy environment. Each of the CPAR programs described below have contributed in some way towards the achievement of the MDGs. Have a look! PEACEBUILDING AND MINE ACTION: Landmine Survivor Support and Injury Prevention: Under this project, CPAR worked to provide support to landmine survivors and landmine-affected communities through several interventions. CPAR trained counsellors who support physical and psychological recovery for landmine survivors. CPAR was active in the realm of mine risk education to educate mine-infested on how to identify potential mine sites, and what to do when encountering unexploded ordinance. We do this by training community leaders in mine risk education and providing them with teaching materials, and establishing clubs to deliver workshops, plays and musical performances on mine-related topics. Finally, CPAR worked directly with landmine survivors by providing vocational and business skills training, so that they can support themselves and their families with appropriate income-generating activities. Emergency Health Project for Aloi IDP Camp: In this project, CPAR helped to boost access to health services and to ensure access to clean water in Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP) camps. CPAR also supported families’ livelihoods in Aloi District through providing agricultural inputs to support local food production efforts. CPAR trained community health workers, drilled water wells, constructed pit latrines, equipped households with energy-efficient stoves and provided seeds and agricultural training to farmers.

FOOD AND SECURITY: Healthy Communities Program: CPAR is supporting farming families’ livelihoods and well being by increasing the capacity of farmers to manage micro-finance projects, encouraging the adoption of conservation agriculture techniques and increasing food production levels. Key strategies include revolving loans of seeds, supporting tree planting by setting up new tree nurseries, encouraging crop diversification and providing training to farmers.

CPAR is also building the capacity of communities to sustain water points through involving members of the community in the construction process, training water and sanitation management committees and promoting advocacy efforts.

Case Study #4

Building Healthy Communities in Ethiopia Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) is one of many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are working hand-in-hand with vulnerable communities in Ethiopia to ensure access to clean water, adequate food, primary health services and a safe and healthy environment. Each of the CPAR programs described below have contributed in some way towards the achievement of the MDGs. Have a look! FOOD SECURITY: Healthy Communities Program: CPAR is working to improve the health and well being of farming households, to build strong partnerships for the development of healthy communities and to increase the capacity of all stakeholders to respond to development challenges, especially as related to food security and sustainable livelihoods. Integrated Food Security Program: CPAR is working with farming communities to increase agricultural productivity though providing training on improved soil and water conservation methods, more effective land use planning and improved technologies as well as by helping to increase access to vital agricultural inputs like seeds. Disaster Preparedness Program: CPAR is working to improve disaster preparedness by intensifying agricultural production, developing water irrigation systems for agricultural use, improving livestock management techniques, promoting the consumption of wild edible plants and the supporting the diversification of income-generating activities.

WATER AND SANITATION: Community-Based Water & Sanitation Program: CPAR is working with targeted communities to construct water points, develop community plans for the maintenance of new water points and to build low-cost hand washing facilities to aid in the promotion of good hygiene practices. Under this project, CPAR is also working directly with three primary schools on sanitation and hygiene sensitization. BASIC EDUCATION: Education for All: CPAR is contributing towardsimproved social and economic status in the Dibate region of Ethiopia through boosting literacy rates and reducing incidences of gender-based violence and discrimination. CPAR is building and facilitating instruction t alternative basic education centres, providing much-needed education for women and girls on reading, basic mathematics, and human rights amongst other topics.
