All science notebook entries must include:

Date in the top right-hand corner.

Underlined title in the center of top margin.

Page number in the center of bottom margin.

Activity notes or reflection in the body of the page.

If you run out of space, continue the activity on the next right or left page. Label that page 1R Continued or 1L Continued.

Science notebook pages are used:

•Right = Shared Space, includes:•class/lecture notes•lab activities•REAPS questions (as a class)•any activity we do together in class

•Left = Personal Space, includes:•warm-ups•brainstorming•reflection•REAPS questions (individually)•any activity you do on your own•any questions or comments you

have during an activity

Oftentimes, we will work with questions that will help you check how much you’ve learned. There are 5 types of questions:

1.RECALL (aka. Remember): Determines whether you have learned the basic knowledge or facts.

2. EXTEND:Determines whether you can organize basic knowledge (ex. compare, contrast, classify).

Warm-Up:List 3 questions you have always had about Earth Science.

3. ANALYZE:Encourages you to apply or interpret what

you have learned (ex. ask questions, design investigations, interpret data)

4. PREDICT:Encourages you to think about what might

happen based on observations; engages you in a new topic that builds on what you already know.

5. SELF/PEER ASSES:Encourages you to take responsibility for

your own learning; for example, activities that require you to think about your or a partner’s progress.

Inquiry: A seeking or request for truth, information, or knowledge by questioning.

5 essential features of science inquiry: 1. Engage in scientifically-oriented questions.Scientifically oriented questions:•Always focus on the natural world.•Can be investigated scientifically.•2 groups: ‘why’ questions and ‘how’ questions.

2. Give priority to evidence in responding to questions.Evidence: •Factual information used to support an explanation.•Is observed or measured.•Can be detected with one or more of the five senses: seen, heard, smelled, felt, or tasted.•Can be observed by many people.

Warm-Up:Explain the difference between a Recall-level question and an Analyze-level question.

Reflect:•In your own words, describe inquiry.

•How will we use we use inquiry in our class to learn science?

3. Formulate explanations from evidence.Explanations include:

•Claim: an answer to the original question.•Evidence•Reasoning: justification that links the claim and evidence.

4. Connect explanation to scientific knowledge.Scientific knowledge: the set of ideas about and well-proven explanations for the natural world.

5. Communicate and justify explanation.Scientific communication:

•Makes investigation available to others.•Includes journal articles, web sites, books, etc.
