PRINCIPAL’S NOTES

COVID -19 Update Please refer to the media release later in the Newsletter. We have been advised by the Department of Education that we are not to hold assemblies, meetings, interschool sporting and arts events in the foreseeable future, as a precaution to stop the spread of the COVID -19 virus. This will mean that we have to postpone Grandparents day until a later date in the year. Other events that are postponed include the PSSA Rugby League Trials, PSSA State Swimming Championships and perhaps the Stewart House Excursion, Parent/Teacher Interviews and other upcoming events, at this stage.

Public Speaking Finals Public Speaking will go ahead on Thursday, unfortunately without visitors to the school. Each speech will be recorded and sent home on a USB to those families with a student in the finals.

Hygiene It is important that we all wash our hands regularly and sneeze and cough into a tissue. If students or staff are sick, they are strongly advised to stay at home until well. The wellbeing, health and safety of our students, staff and their families, remains our main focus.

CHS Results Congratulations to Felicity Cook for placing 23rd in the 13 years 100m Freestyle and Will Duce for placing 15th in the 14 years 50m Freestyle. Well done!

PSSA Western Results Bailey Thompson gained first place in the 100m Freestyle, 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly. Congratulations Bailey!

Luke Kennedy

Luke Kennedy was an excellent motivational speaker last week. He addressed the Primary students Years 3-6, Secondary students, staff as well as parents and community members. Again thank you to Mrs Norwood for organising this inspiring event!

Book Club Book Club Issue 2 is due back this Wednesday. Please ensure the completed forms and money are dropped to the Front Office. Alternatively, download “LOOP” on your smart phone and order online.

Year 1/2 Mr Ptomely found a lonely blue-tongue lizard

under the COLA and decided to move it

somewhere a little quieter. The Year 1/2

students were keen to observe the lizard and

discussed what they should do if they see

different types of animals in the wild. It was

also decided that we would be doing a blue-

tongue lizard inspired artwork in the near

future.

Writing

Students have been engaged in their writing and are enjoying learning about creating well-

structured recounts. Students have displayed a keen interest in their writing of late and building on

their knowledge of technical vocabulary and using paragraphs.

Creative Arts

This week we started to create a new artwork that will be displayed in our classroom. First students

have used water-based paint to colour their backgrounds. Then they coloured in one of the images

using pencils. Next students will use crepe paper to enhance the texture of their final artworks. After

they will use oil pastels to design their last image before putting it all together. I can’t wait!

Science

1/2 are learning about the importance of water

and how we use it around the school. Students

enjoyed searching for water outlets around the

school and discussing how water is used in the

different faculties of the senior classrooms. Mr O. Batten 1/2 Teacher

Public Speaking Competition and Grandparents Day Our Public Speaking Finals will be held on Thursday the 19th of March. Unfortunately, due to the current Department policy, parents and community members will not be able to attend. Each student's speech will be recorded so that parents and family members can watch them. In line with current policy, we have also had to postpone Grandparents Day until further notice. Thank you to the students who have worked so hard to provide brilliant speeches.

Sport News Western Swimming

Last Thursday William Duce and Felicity Cook travelled to Dubbo to compete at the Secondary Western Swimming Carnival. After weeks of training it was finally time to swim their races. Nerves starting to build in both students, they used this to their advantage and swam amazingly in their events. William swam in the 14 years 50m freestyle race and placed 14th in the Western region. Felicity competed in the 100m 13 years freestyle race and placed 23rd. Congratulations Will and Felicity in making the next level in secondary swimming. On Friday Bailey Thompson travelled to Dubbo to compete at the Primary Western Swimming Carnival. Bailey competed in 4 events on the day, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Bailey’s training has paid off, holding his own against able body athletes. In all events Bailey placed 1st and is to be commended on his efforts. Bailey will be off to compete at State in the near future.

Sport cancellations and postponements

The media release from Mark Scott, Secretary - NSW Department of Education, last night indicated a ‘phased social distancing strategy’ is to be implemented from Monday 16th March 2020.
