Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations – I feel like I am somewhat confident in finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations. I sometimes find it difficult to understand that there might be more than one correct answer for a situation.

Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum- I am somewhat confident in tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum. I like to read about certain issues that interest me that help me come to a conclusion about something. This helps enhance my learning experience because I am somewhat aware of what is going on.

I feel like I am good at asking a lot of questions to help me come to a conclusion. I try not to make a decision or use an answer unless I have made sure I have asked the appropriate questions.

I find it difficult for me to understand that there isn’t always a correct answer or even an answer to every situation. I hope by the end of this class I have a better understanding that even though I haven’t come up with an exact answer I might not be wrong.

I have made many connections in this class back to my Educational Phycology class. I am also becoming more comfortable knowing that there is more than one possibility to a situation. I am still not extremely comfortable, but I am working on it.

something that I don’t understand so I have a better understanding. Asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen our

understanding- I have become comfortable in asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen my understanding. I have learned different ways to ask questions to get a deeper answer. It has also helped to have Barb “question” us because it shows us as students how to ask good questions.

Being comfortable with “not knowing” or not having the “correct answer” – I am still struggling somewhat with “not knowing”. I am becoming a little more comfortable each class though. I am used to being able to coming up with an answer right away.

Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations I have become comfortable finding patterns and connections in certain things. It really helped doing the readings and making the connections in class. I have realized that there may be more than one possible answer to questions. I learned that other people interpret situations differently than I might and that it might be useful information.

Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum-I have become comfortable tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum. I have learned to research things that I am not sure about. Before, if I didn’t know something I would just go on with my day and not worry about it. Now, I am curious to find answers to the “why” questions.

I have learned different ways to ask questions to get a deeper answer. It really helped to do the final project because Taylor and I had to come up with multiple different questions for rounds on Inquiry.

Re-examine “scientific words and phrases” that you remember, read, or hear from others. What meaning do these words really have to you?- I am somewhat confident in re-examining scientific words and phrases that are used by others. I will admit a lot of the time I just read over something and do not take the time to stop and actually think about what the word means. I am not really a huge science person so I don’t normally pay much attention to scientific terms. Now that I am in 2 science classes along with this class this semester I have had to really sit back and think about a lot of science. I hope I start to feel more confident in this category as the semester goes on.

Recording your learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understanding- I am confident in recording my learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understanding. It really helps me to take notes and write down the things I have learned or done in class. By doing this, I can reread the notes at home and really take the time to sit back and think about what I did in class that day. I have not done it very often in the pass, but I have noticed when I do it, it definitely helps!

Referring to those reflections and examining what you understood at that time while looking for connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problems- I feel confident in referring to my reflections and examining what I understood at that certain time. When I am not sure about something I am able to look up an answer to better my understanding about something. When I am looking at my notes from class I come up with some questions that I might want to ask in class next time. I feel like this really helps me understand certain concepts better than just learning it in class and walking away.

It has helped a lot to write down what I have learned and what I need to go back over when I get home. Then when I get home, it makes it easier for me to review what I need to. I sometimes forget what I have done in class so it is very helpful that I take notes and record things.

Referring to those reflections and examining what you understood at that time while looking for connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problems- When looking back into my notes I have noticed that I am beginning to make more and more connections. If I can’t seem to make connections on my own I try and refer back to my notes and the textbook. Like I mentioned before, if I can’t make the connection on my own I can write it down and ask next time I am in class.

I never used to pay attention to words and phrases I didn’t know, but after doing multiple projects in this class I was pretty much forced to look up things that I didn’t understand. This has helped me realize that it is helpful to look up things that you don’t understand.

It helped a lot to keep a journal during our final project because I would forget things and I could go back and look them up. If there was something I wanted to look into further I had all the notes I needed in my journal.

Everything that we have learned in the textbook and in class has somehow been reflected in our projects and papers.

Engaging in dialogue with others as we work together to deepen understanding – learning involves the community of learners- I am confident in engaging in dialogue with others to work together to deepen understanding. I think it is very important to involve other people’s opinions on certain situations. It also helps to get a different point of view on certain issues.

Reflecting on how you are making sense of your learning process and science content both individually and as group- I am not very confident when it comes to reflecting on how I am making sense of my learning process and science content. I find it very difficult to sit down and talk with others about my progress about my learning process.

Sharing your ideas (i.e. questions, thoughts, concerns, confusion, etc.) openly with others in group and class discussions so group thinking can occur-I am confident about sharing my ideas and thoughts. I am a pretty open person when it comes to that kind of stuff. I like to tell people my opinion and see what theirs is about the same situation. I find it very interesting to listen to others also.

I have become a bit more comfortable, but I would like to gain some confidence in this area before too long. I think it has a lot to do with it being science related. I am not very confident in this area.

Like I mentioned before I like to state my opinion about things and see if people have the same opinion as me. I also think it is important to state my confusions about things. The other people in the group may have a good explanation or a better way to doing something.

I am a very talkative person so I don’t have trouble conversing with others. I like to hear what people are thinking and use their help to deepen my understanding of things.

Reflecting on how you are making sense of your learning process and science content both individually and as group- I have become comfortable talking about my learning process and science content with others. It has become helpful to me to talk about my process because I can hear about others learning processes also.

Sharing your ideas (i.e. questions, thoughts, concerns, confusion, etc.) openly with others in group and class discussions so group thinking can occur- I am confident sharing my ideas openly with others. I am quite a bit more confident than I was when I first started this class. I was always afraid someone would “shoot down” my ideas, but now I feel like people mostly value my opinion about things and it helps them deepen their learning in some way, just like I use their opinions.

I like to have answers to questions that I have and I find that I become frustrated if I can’t figure out an answer. It is going to take me some time to realize that learning is so complex and there always isn’t a correct answer to every question.

EDUC 224What I am Thinking Now - Expectations

Class Expectations:

1. Attend all class sessions. Notify instructor of absence by email and take responsibility to learn about missed experiences from your group.  In class credit cannot be made up.  Absences may lower your final grade because class activities require participation to earn points. See syllabus.

Beginning: If you don’t think you will be able to attend class on time and/or regularly, explain the difficult you foresee so we can discuss it.

Attend all class sessions. Notify instructor of absence by email and take responsibility to learn about missed experiences from your group.  In class credit cannot be made up.  Absences may lower your final grade because class activities require participation to earn points. See syllabus. – I am confident that I will be able to attend all class sessions. The only reason I would not be able to come to class is if I am passing a kidney stone. I have a really difficult time with kidney stones, but luckily I have not had to miss any classes.

Middle: Explain your attendance pattern to date and whether you need to modify it for the rest of the class.

– I have attended each class that we have had. I have been on time and not left early one time. I feel like I could participate more than I do. I am sometimes shy when it comes to participating in class because I am afraid to say the wrong thing.

I am very confident participating fully in all class sessions. I feel like I work well with others. I do need to work on letting others fully state their opinions and thoughts, because I tend to get in a group and take control.

I have enjoyed working in the different groups this semester. I like to hear their different opinions. This gives me a better understanding of the topic. I also like to have information presented by the instructor, because sometimes they have a different view about things too.

to know quite a few different people and valued their opinions on certain things. It was helpful to have Barb’s opinions on certain things too. In the future I will allow my students to work in groups so they can have the perspective of others. I will also give them my point of view about the subject.

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking

I really don’t like getting graded as a group. I had a bad experience one semester when someone did not participate in the group project. I don’t think people that don’t put the effort in should get the same grade as people that do put the effort in. I feel like when we are graded on individual work we are responsible for our grade and our grade only.

Middle: Explain why your preferences have or have not changed at this time.

I have learned that not every group is a bad group to work with. I still feel like some people don’t put in the same amount of effort as others, but the way we are graded in groups seems pretty fair to me.

I feel like I have learned a lot from my group projects. I noticed that I still like to do work on my own, but my interest in group projects has grown. I think experiencing positive things from group projects has definitely helped me. Before this class, I was very negative about group work because I had a couple bad experiences. My future students will now be able to work in groups because I won’t have a negative opinion about group work.

I like to ask questions. I think class is much more interesting if you participate rather than just sitting there. I also think it is interesting to hear other people’s opinions. If you ask questions you give yourself the ability to grow in that field of study.

I have noticed that I am pretty quiet in this class. I don’t know if I am just not comfortable with the subject or what it is. I like to ask questions because it helps me understand things better. I find it easier to explain my ideas in a smaller group rather than a larger group.

I don’t think I really am confident presenting my ideas to the whole class. I like working in small groups rather than a large group. I feel like I feel less intimidated.
