1 NAMES FROM 15TH CEN. ENGLISH CHANCERY DOCUMENTS by Alys Mackyntoich (Alissa Pyrich) This article collects given names and place names extracted from the Anthology of Chancery English (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1984) (http://name.umdl.umich.edu/ChancEng), a collection of transcriptions of Middle English, Middle French and Latin documents from chancery and court records dated between 1410 and 1462. This article incorporates data from my earlier Names from the Signet Documents of Henry V (http://st-walburga.aspiringluddite.com/docs/SignetHenryV.pdf ), which was limited to data from the reign of Henry V of England. The Anthology preserves the original spellings. Letters in parenthesis are editorial guesses by the compilers of the Anthology in instances when the original text is illegible. All of the name spellings in this article are found in the source documents; in the section on place names are the probable modern spellings added for reference. The documents include references to English, French, Scottish and Welsh individuals, as well as one Spaniard whose name has been rendered into an English spelling. The most common pattern in the data is [given name] + [surname] . The second most common pattern is [given name] + [surname] + [locative] . de, of and atte are all used with locatives bynames; in one instance, atte and of are used for the same locative byname in the same document. There is one instance of a complex combination of bynames: Iohan Goldsmyth the elder of Melton. The ‘ȝ’ character is used in some the original texts in place of a ‘z’ or ‘s’ sound; it is not the Middle English or Scots ‘yogh.’ This usage likely represents a transcription problem, as ‘z’ and a ‘yogh’ can appear quite similar in certain calligraphy hands.

This article collects given names and place names extracted from the Anthology of
Chancery English (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1984)
(http://name.umdl.umich.edu/ChancEng), a collection of transcriptions of Middle English,
Middle French and Latin documents from chancery and court records dated between 1410 and
1462. This article incorporates data from my earlier Names from the Signet Documents of Henry
V (http://st-walburga.aspiringluddite.com/docs/SignetHenryV.pdf ), which was limited to data
The Anthology preserves the original spellings. Letters in parenthesis are editorial
guesses by the compilers of the Anthology in instances when the original text is illegible. All of
the name spellings in this article are found in the source documents; in the section on place
names are the probable modern spellings added for reference.
The documents include references to English, French, Scottish and Welsh individuals, as
well as one Spaniard whose name has been rendered into an English spelling.
The most common pattern in the data is [given name] + [surname]. The second most
common pattern is [given name] + [surname] + [locative]. de, of and atte are all used with
locatives bynames; in one instance, atte and of are used for the same locative byname in the same
document. There is one instance of a complex combination of bynames: Iohan Goldsmyth the
elder of Melton.
The ‘’ character is used in some the original texts in place of a ‘z’ or ‘s’ sound; it is not
the Middle English or Scots ‘yogh.’ This usage likely represents a transcription problem, as ‘z’
and a ‘yogh’ can appear quite similar in certain calligraphy hands.
