Chart 1: Beds & Rooms Occupancy Indices

• The Hotels and Restaurants sector serves as a proxy to the tourism sector and it remains a priority sector under NDP5. The contribution of hotels and restaurants to GDP in 2018 was 1.6 percent compared to 1.8 percent recorded in 2017 whereas 1.9 percent was registered in 2016.

• The monthly Index for Rooms’ Occupancy rate recorded 106.2 basis points in November 2019 compared to 124.8 basis points recorded in October 2019 whereas 112.7 basis points were registered in November 2018. This represents declines of 14.9 percent m/m and 5.8 percent y/y.

• The monthly Index for Beds’ Occupancy rate registered 112.9 basis points during November 2019 while in October 2019 the index stood at 134.8 basis points as compared to 110.4 basis points recorded for November 2018. This represents a decline of 16.3 percent m/m and an increase of 2.2 percent y/y.

Chart 2: Regional & International Arrivals and Departures Indices

• The Index for Regional and International Arrivals Index recorded 108.1 basis points in November 2019 compared to 126.3 basis points registered in October 2019 whereas 118.7 basis points were registered in November 2018. This represents declines of 14.4 percent m/m and 9.0 percent y/y.

• The Index for Regional and International Departures for

November 2019 stood at 122.1 basis points while 126.4 basis points were recorded in the preceding month whereas 137.4 basis points were registered for November 2018. This represents declines of 3.4 percent m/m and 11.1 percent y/y.
