PLACARDS AND MARKINGS - GENERAL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION ___________________________________________________________

1. General _______ This document shows the placards, stencils and markings and gives their location on the aircraft. This chapter has the parts that follow: - Placards and markings on the external side of the aircraft (Ref. ATA 11-20) - Placards and markings on the internal side of the aircraft (Ref. ATA 11-30).

For more information about panel location, refer to AMM Chapter 06. Use the AMM Chapter 06 as the primary reference.

There are three types of placards and markings ATA 100 specification.

A. Safety Data These placards and markings are used for the flight crew, and passenger cabins, and for equipment safety. They include WARNINGS and CAUTIONS.

B. Maintenance Data These are servicing and maintenance instructions.

C. By Local Regulation The aircraft must have these placards and markings. When these types of placards are shown in Chapter 11, they are identified by (1).

(3) FOTOFOIL type No.3 Standard No.1 and 2 labels are in plastic material with white letters on black matt finish. Type No.3 labels are in 0.076 mm (0.002 in.) metal foil for use in skydrol zones with white letters on black matt finish.

NOTE : To prevent scribe marks on the aircraft skin, use scissors or a ____ cutter with a plate between the film and the aircraft skin (0.6 mm (0.0236 in.) thick minimum with metal and 2 mm (0.0787 in.) thick minimum with hard plastic). You can also use a Couppy cutter or spare blades. (Ref. Fig. 202/TASK 11-00-00-991-007)

(1) Decals applied over a joint between two surfaces which move with respect to each other.

(a) With gaps of 2.53 mm (0.0996 in.) and greater, cut the decal at the center of the gap and wrap the decal around both edges. See Method A.

(b) With gaps of less than 2.53 mm (0.0996 in.), cut the decal flush with the front or upper edge of the joint and wrap the decal around the rear or lower edge. See Method B.

(2) Decals applied across lap joints.

(a) The decal, when it is applied, is wrapped smoothly and continuously around the edge of the lap joint. See Method C (preferred method).

(3) Decals applied to exterior emergency exit handles. See Method E.

(a) Before removing the backing paper, place the decal on the handle and slit the decal overlap around each rounded corner.

(b) Remove the backing paper and apply the decal, pressing the overlap around the edges of the handle.

(4) Cut decals, except pressure sensitive Polyester, around the heads of fasteners on removable panels and punch the decal into the recessed slot. Cut and remove an area of film of pressure-sensitive polyester decals the approximate size of a protruding-head rivet or fastener. Allow the adhesive to cure for 1/2 hour before sealing the edges.

A. Installation of Identification Tapes

(1) Remove the backing paper.

(2) Affix the tape by evenly unrolling and gradually smoothing out to prevent the formation of air bubbles.

R (3) Overlap the tape-ends and smooth out.

(4) Apply two coats of STRUCTURE PAINTS (Material No. 16-003) to the band, overlapping the edge of the band by 10 mm (0.3937 in.) approx. using a soft hair brush.

(5) If the paint becomes damaged, apply STRUCTURE PAINTS (Material No. 16-016) to prevent attack of the adhesive by fluid (e.g. against hydraulic fluid) and subsequent separation of the tape.

(6) If the film of STRUCTURE PAINTS (Material No. 16-003) is excessively damaged, replace the tape and renew the protective finish.

(a) In a plastic container, mix one volume of lukewarm water at a temperature between 30 deg.C (86.00 deg.F) and 40 deg.C (104.00 deg.F) with one volume of the fixative SPECIAL MATERIALS (Material No. 05-029).

(2) If the paint is not new, do the steps that follow:

(a) Apply the fixative SPECIAL MATERIALS (Material No. 05-029) on the applicable painted area.

(b) In a plastic container, mix two volumes of lukewarm water at a temperature between 30 deg.C (86.00 deg.F) and 40 deg.C (104.00 deg.F) with one volume of the fixative SPECIAL MATERIALS (Material No. 05-029).


Subtask 11-00-00-915-059

A. Installation of the Label

NOTE : Let the paint dry before you install the label. ____

NOTE : Do this work at a temperature between 15 deg.C (59.00 deg.F) and ____ 30 deg.C (86.00 deg.F) and a hygrometry between 40 and 75 percent.

(1) Put the label in the mixture during 15 to 20 seconds.

(2) Install the label with the markings against the contact surface.

(3) Apply a pressure on one of the ends of the label against the support and pull the other end up to prevent wrinkles.

(4) Apply a pressure on the label against the surface with a plastic scraper.

NOTE : To prevent wrinkles or air pockets, you must start from the ____ center to the edges.

(5) Apply a strong pressure on all the surface with a rubber roll.

(6) At the same time, remove the unwanted solution with a moist sponge.

(7) Apply the moist sponge to the backing paper of the label.

(8) After 2 minutes, remove the backing paper.

(9) Lightly remove the remaining compound from the label surface and around the label with a sponge soaked with water.

(10) If applicable, make holes in the air pockets with a needle, and apply a pressure with the plastic scraper.


R (11) If the installation is incorrect

(a) If the label is moist: - Remove the label and do the procedure again with a new label.

(b) If the label is dry: - Apply a lint-free cotton cloth MISCELLANEOUS (Material No. 19- 003) soaked with CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-003) on the label. - Remove the label with a plastic scraper.

NOTE : The label is bonded after 3 or 4 days. During this time, ____ do not clean the label area.

B. Protection of exterior markings

(1) Apply a cross coat of PAINTS FOR DETAIL (INTERNAL AND EXTERN AL) (Material No. 07-018) on all external functional and maintenance markings with a soft hair brush.

B. Surface Reactivation

(1) Before you apply the paint, make all the surfaces rough with abrasive nylon pads and CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-004).

NOTE : Stop the reactivation procedure when the surface is ____ sufficiently rough. Be careful not to remove or damage the protection of the skin or composite fibers.

NOTE : The surface on which you do the reactivation must be wet, but ____ it is possible to rub a dry surface if a vacuum cleaning device is available to remove the dust when you have rubbed the surface.

(2) If necessary, remove the remaining sealant with grade 220 emery cloth.

(3) Lightly rub the screw or rivet rows to remove all the black signs.

(4) Make the surface rough by hand: - for all the areas to which it is not possible to get access with the sanding machine - if there is a risk of damage when you use the machine (overlaping sheet metal junctions, window and windshield frames, antenna supports, fuselage area behind the radome).

(5) Use an abrasive rotative brush to clean the areas with round head rivets.

C. Final Cleaning and Wiping

R (1) Rinse the surfaces you have rubbed with CLEANING AGENTS (Material No.R 11-004) then wipe with a clean lint-free cloth before the cleaning agent evaporates.

(2) Lightly wipe again all the upper sections of the aircraft (fuselage above the windows, upper surface wings) with anti-dust pads before application of the wash primer.

(b) Use adhesive tape to show the limits of the bonded area.

(c) Rub the contact surfaces with emery paper grade 320.

(d) Remove the adhesive tape.

(e) Clean the contact surfaces with a MISCELLANEOUS (Material No. 19- 003) soaked with CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-003).

B. Removal of the Rudder Reference Plate (if installed) and Preparation of the Surface

(1) Drill out the rivets that attach the reference plate to the structure.

(2) Remove the reference plate with a non-metallic spatula.

(3) Discard the reference plate.

(4) Remove the remaining sealant from the area and clean with a MISCELLANEOUS (Material No. 19-003) and CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-026).

(5) Install eight blind rivets.

(6) Close the rivet holes with SEALANTS (Material No. 09-013).

R (1) Put the label in the fixative for 30 to 45 seconds.

(2) Install the label with the marking against the contact surface.

(3) Apply a pressure on one of the ends of the label against the supportR and pull the other end up, to prevent wrinkles.

R (4) Apply pressure to the label against the surface with a plastic scraper.

R NOTE : To prevent wrinkles and air pockets, you must start from the ____R center to the edges.

(5) Apply a strong pressure on all the surface with a rubber roller.

(6) At the same time, remove the unwanted solution with a moist sponge.

(7) Apply the moist sponge to the backing paper of the label.

(8) After 2 minutes, remove the backing paper.

(9) Lightly remove the remaining compound from the label surface and around the label with a sponge soaked in water.

(10) If applicable, make holes in the air pockets with a needle, and apply pressure with the plastic scraper.

(11) If the installation is incorrect:

(a) If the label is moist: - Remove the label and do the procedure again with a new label.

(b) If the label is dry: - Apply a lint-free cotton cloth MISCELLANEOUS (Material No. 19- 003) soaked with CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-003), CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-016) or CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-026) on the label. - Remove the label with a plastic scraper.

NOTE : The label is bonded after 3 or 4 days. During this time, ____ do not clean the label area.
