COATING FORMULATION: NCI – a crystal clear, aliphatic, moisture cured, one component polyurethane/polyuria hybrid formulation with extreme cross-link density for UV, CHEMICAL AND ABRASION RESISTANCE. NCI is formulated to penetrate and fortify existing paint systems (newly painted or highly oxidized), not replace them. Applications: Heavy equipment, ships, external structures, fleet equipment, facilities, concrete floors, stamped concrete, fences (metal and wood), above ground storage tanks, equipment, bridge rails and signs that have degraded paint/coatings from UV, chemical and abrasion forces.

PROJECT OVERVIEW: Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) wanted to complete a follow-on pilot test for two new plow/salt trucks bumper #04-4067 and #04-4068 based upon a previous Nano-Clear NCI pilot program. Alternate one-half of each truck was coated with Nano-Clear Industrial (NCI). The driver side half of truck #04-4067 and the passenger side half of truck #04-4068 was prepared and sprayed with a 4-6 mil coating of Nano-Clear Industrial (NCI) during August 2016.

PURPOSE OF THE TEST: The purpose of the testing is for validation of the corrosion protection properties along with objective to eliminate maintenance cycles for preservation of the equipment. The reduction of maintenance costs and preservation of the plow/salt trucks from corrosion damage should provide life cycle savings over the NCI application costs. COATING FORMULATION: NCI – a crystal clear, aliphatic, moisture cured, one component polyurethane/polyuria hybrid formulation with extreme cross-link density for UV, CHEMICAL AND ABRASION RESISTANCE. CURRENT SITUATION: Maintenance is a significant portion of any activities’ budget in terms of materials and labor. Strategic Visionary Solutions LLC proposed NCI as an effective product to extend the protection of the MDOT assets and reduction of maintenance cycles. MDOT wants to reduce operating costs and extend property life time. The new paint film was intact and in some areas the epoxy paint had begun to ablate. Each truck that was supplied, was ½ coated per MDOT direction. Truck #04-4067 was coated with NCI on the driver side half of the truck. Truck #04-4068 was coated with NCI on the passenger side of the truck.

APPLICATION: Preparation:

The surfaces were washed with Super Clean, a concentration recommended by the manufacturer and water using a soft/medium bristle brush and a power washer.

The surface was rinsed with water using a pressure washer and/or sponge/brushes.

The trucks were allowed to dry-air, wiped with a clean rag or blown dry with compressed air.

The trucks did not need to be media blasted or wire brushed.

Since the trucks were new they were rubbed out with 400 grit sandpaper on the high gloss areas and received another wash with Super Clean and another rinse.

Once the existing paint/coating on the truck was dry, it was ready for application. Application: The application of NCI was completed with a commercial sprayer. This is usually an airless sprayer or HVLP spray gun. Mohair paint rollers can be used.

In general, the section of the existing paint was coated with NCI, ensuring all areas of the painted surface were thoroughly coated.

Then adjacent sections were coated.

The previous coated section had application of another coat of NCI spraying in a cross-hatch direction to allow a 4-6 mil film build upon completion.

Once an acceptable finish was obtained, application of NCI was stopped and allowed to “level”. The low viscosity of NCI (40 cps) allowed the finish to “level” out.

NCI was applied from the top of the asset working top down to the bottom.

The previous sections were coated with NCI because oxidized paint and/or freshly coated surfaces have different absorption rates. When areas absorbed more of the NCI than other areas, additional NCI was applied to even the finish.

Truck hood was removed on truck #04-4068 for ease of spraying NCI application.

The tire rims were also coated on the corresponding coated sides.

PILOT TEST: MDOT

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

NCI was applied to the two new MDOT trucks per MDOT direction. The substrate preparation prior to application of NCI was per standard coating preparation procedures – wash the asset with Super Clean (at a concentration recommended by the manufacturer), rinse with clean water and a sponge. 400 grit sanding and rub out on gloss areas with additional washing and rinsing. Scotch-Brite pads were used to remove any loose material or surface corrosion. The assets were allowed to dry thoroughly before the Nano-Clear® was applied. NCI penetrated the paint/coating system and fortified it with superior physical properties – much better physical properties than the original paint/coating. The combined NCI/paint coating system extends the protection of the equipment. The goal is to reach 10 years, saving re-painting and reduced maintenance cycle costs. NCI does not replace paint systems – NCI is the economical solution to extend the performance life of paint systems. NCI Saves Money:

Prevents premature paint failures

Eliminates substrate preparation required for new paint

Eliminates labor for same

Saves primer and paint material costs

Saves labor for same CALL TO ACTION:

Inspect the truck bi-monthly for 12 months for initial follow-up. Monitor coating for historical life cycle maintenance cost reduction. Strategic Visionary Solutions LLC is the distributor of NCI for all oxidized and new Michigan assets including light poles, signage, enclosures, exterior doors, railings, aboveground storage tanks, equipment, facilities, trucks and bridges for reduced maintenance and operational costs. Incorporating NCI into the MDOT maintenance protocol can extend the service life of all assets and save significant financial and labor resources over the current paint system(s).
