DESCRIPTION

From sleek fashion to life-saving medicines, the NANO Supermarket presents nanotech products that could hit store shelves within the next decade. Nanotechnology is an emerging field of materials science that deals with structures at the scale of one billionth of a meter. Our traveling “store” allows visitors to explore the impact of this technology on their everyday lives. Lead by trained guides, visitors can debate the uses and abuses of pharmaceutical sushi, Twitter tooth implants and dozens of other products. The Supermarket presents products not as predictions, but as scenarios for potential futures. A dynamic blend of science and fiction, the NANO Supermarket helps us to decide what nanotech future we really want.

GROW YOUR OWN SNEAKER WITH BIOCUSTOMIZATION

Always dreamt of a pair of uniquely personalized sneakers? At Rayfish.com you can now ‘grow’ your own sneaker from a genetically engineered stingray. Using our online design tool you can remix the DNA of existing animal patterns into something nature could never have imagined. One fish. One shoe.

With Energy Belt, stop treating your excess fat like a liability, and instead embrace its untap-ped potential. Artificial protocells in the belt mimic natural brown fat, taking the energy from white fat and converting it into ATP. This chemical energy can be used to power everything from cell phones to pacemakers. Eat what you want at dinner, and give up that gym membership for good. Energy Belt cuts down on electricity costs while you cut down on size.

RAYFISH SHOES

As the planet’s population speeds towards 9 bil-lion, it becomes impossible to continue consuming meat like we do today. Lab grown meat, which is grown in bioreactors from animal cells, could be a sustainable alternative. Magic Meatballs playfully familiarize children with in-vitro meat. The balls come in different tastes and colors. They are full of vitamins, omega-3s and crackle in your mouth!

WELCOMEA NEW SUPERMARKET IS COMING TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD: THE NANO SUPERMARKET MAKES THE IMPACT OF NANOTECHNOLOGY ON YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE TANGIBLE. OUR SHELVES ARE STOCKED WITH NANO PRODUCTS THAT COULD BECOME AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET BETWEEN NOW AND THE NEXT TEN YEARS.

Lab-grown meat, interactive wallpaint, an energy belt that converts excess belly fat into electricity, glow-in-the-dark dog poop, sneakers from genetically modified fish leather, gender-selecting condoms, and a pill that turns sweat into perfume. Our products are innovative, useful and wonderful, but sometimes also strange or even frightening.

Maybe you have never heard of nanotechnology. It is about making things on an atomic or molecular scale; one nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Nanotechnology is an umbrella term for a whole range of different technologies that take place on a scale between 1 and 100 nanometers. Companies and governments are currently investing millions of euros in nanotechnology, because it is generally thought that it will make our lives easier and better.

NANO REVOLUTIONDo you have products with nanotechnology at home? Yes, you do! Nanotechnology is already used in a variety of consumer products, from day creams to sports socks and from refrigerators to bread bins. Nanoparticles, for instance, provide extra UV-protection in cosmetics or improve the bounce of tennis balls. This is all very convenient, but at the same time there are a lot of things we don’t know about nanotechnology, for example if nanoparticles are 100 % safe and, possibly more important: How will nanotechnology change our everyday life?A wave of nanotechnology is flooding our society, but yet most people know very little about the impact of this new human achievement. Experts expect nanotechnology to have a huge influence on the way we live, comparable with historical

technological developments like digitalization, the industrial revolution, electricity, the printing press, the introduction of the written word, or the beginnings of agriculture thousands of years ago. Nanotechnology radically changes our notion of what is natural. It can make the dreams people have about themselves come true, but it can also lead to products we possibly shouldn’t even want to have.

PUBLIC DEBATEThe time is ripe for a public debate about nanotechnology. This discussion is indeed already taking place in newspapers, magazines, science cafés, in the theater and on television, and now also in the specially created NANO Supermarket. Whereas most debates about nanotechnology address our fascination with making things on an incredibly small molecular scale or the safety of nanoparticles, the NANO Supermarket tries to make the transformative influence of nanotechnology on mankind and society tangible and recognizable.

IN THE SUPERMARKET NEW HABITS, LIFE STYLES AND TECHNOLOGIES BECOME COMMONPLACE

We have chosen the supermarket as our stage instead of a traditional exhibition space, because a supermarket is both an everyday and a technological environment. Because of our frequent visits to the supermarket, we have come to view it as a normal or even boring place, but essentially it is a very futuristic phenomenon. Imagine what would happen if we put a randomly chosen person from the Middle Ages inside a contemporary supermarket: he or she would have very little understanding, or nothing at all, of the products on the shelves. Coke bottles? Body lotion? Energy bars? Milk cartons? Light products enriched with vitamins? Instant soup? Pregnancy tests? The supermarket is a place where

new habits, lifestyles and technologies are made commonplace. Therefore it is the perfect location to explore our nano future.

IS EVERYTHING IN THE NANO SUPERMARKET ‘REAL’?The great majority of the products on our shelves are still in a theoretical phase. Young designers and technologists from six different countries submitted them in response to our open call for nano product visions. A panel of leading professors of nanotechnology, designers, artists, philosophers and technical experts judged the submissions. The selection was made on the basis of originality, quality of design, technological feasibility, social implications and to what extent the product might promote discussion.

Only the most exclusive and exciting products are presented in the NANO supermarket. You shouldn’t expect a complete survey, but a compact collection of personal product views. Strict attention is paid to the technological basis of our products. There are more than enough tall stories about nanotechnology going around. The products you find on our shelves all have a feasibility label. This gives an indication of the year the product might be technically realized and lists which nanotechnology is used in the product.

CONCEIVABLE FUTUREAlthough we can look only a couple of years ahead and our products are based on a technology that is actually being developed today, we in the NANO Supermarket are somewhat looking into a crystal ball. Will that Energy Belt that allows you to charge your cellphone with your own tummy fat ever be realized? Is Nano Lift the botox of the future? Will we all walk around with a Twitter implant? It should not be taken for granted that the products on our shelves will actually be realized. We should interpret them as explorations of a possible future and not an inevitable one. The products in the NANO supermarket haven’t been designed to predict the future. They serve as something to hold onto in the here and now and can help us to determine what kind of nano future we really want.

Our health is worth a lot to us. We exercise, eat healthy food and try to live a balanced life. Your health-insurance company will help you! The Twitter implant monitors your body and alerts your doctor if something in your body isn’t working properly. Therefore, medical interventions will occur at an earlier stage so you remain vital longer. The Twitter implant can also save you money on your monthly health-insurance bill. Your family doctor places the device free of charge. The Twitter implant can be supplied with various coaching programs including “Weight Watchers”, “Club Sportive” and “Alcoholics Anonymous”.

The FluDoc is a personal flu test that uses genetically modified microbes that are sensitive to human influenza viruses. Just like the canary birds that were used in the coalmines to warn miners of dangerous gas, the bacteria in the FluDoc detect if you have the flu. The FluDoc comes with a variety of capsules, testing for the latest flu viruses.

Extra capsules for the most recent viruses are available separately at your local drugstore.
