The highest capacity, obtained at a current density of 0.005 mA/cm 2 and a final discharge voltage of 1.4 V, was 265 mAh/g corresponding to a lithium insertion ratio of x--0.8. Nanocrystalline TiO_ colloid-240 films showed a similar performance. The cycle life of a TiO 2 colloid-240 cell at a high current density was found to be excellent; a capacity loss lower than 14% has been observed over 100 charge/discharge cycles. 1. INTRODUCTION Over the last 10 years of lithium battery development, much research effort has been focused on LiMO 2 (M- Co, Ni, Mn) and TiS2 lithium insertion compounds. 1-5 These oxides or sulfides are generally employed as positive elec- trodes in the form of compressed pellets mixed with carbon and a polymeric binder. They consist of particles whose size is in the micron range. The oxide or sulfide crystals contain layers or channels allowing for reversible lithium ion insertion and extraction into and from the host lattice. Apart from the lattice structure, the performance of a lithium battery, i.e., its capacity, cycle life and electric energy storage efficiency, may also depend on the morphology of the host solid, which is related to particle size and surface texture. 6-7 In the present investigation, the suitability of nanocrystalline oxides for use as intercalation electrodes in batteries is explored. These films are distinguished by a very high internal surface area, the roughness factor of a 10-micron-thick layer being of the order of 1000. 8,9 Pores in the nanometer range are present between the oxide 23

1. INTRODUCTION

Over the last 10 years of lithium battery development, much research effort hasbeen focused on LiMO2 (M- Co, Ni, Mn) and TiS2 lithium insertioncompounds.1-5 These oxides or sulfides are generally employed as positive elec-trodes in the form of compressed pellets mixed with carbon and a polymericbinder. They consist of particles whose size is in the micron range. The oxide orsulfide crystals contain layers or channels allowing for reversible lithium ioninsertion and extraction into and from the host lattice. Apart from the latticestructure, the performance of a lithium battery, i.e., its capacity, cycle life andelectric energy storage efficiency, may also depend on the morphology of the hostsolid, which is related to particle size and surface texture.6-7 In the presentinvestigation, the suitability of nanocrystalline oxides for use as intercalationelectrodes in batteries is explored. particles. These are interconnected and become filled with electrolyte or a solidhole transmitter. Brief sintering produces efficient contact between the particles.Electronic charges injected in the film from the conducting support are able topercolate rapidly through the entire particle network. Apart from their outstandingperformance in dye sensitized photovoltaic cells,8"9 nanocrystalline films made, forexample, of 15 nm sized TiO2 particles have been shown to intercalate lithiumrapidly and reversibly allowing for efficient electrochromic switching of suchtransparent films.

Titanium dioxide has many advantages compared to the electrode materialsmentioned above: (i) its molecular weight is relatively low, hence its theoreticalspecific charge (336 mAh/g) for LiTiO2 is higher than that of LiMnO2 (285mAh/g), LiCoO2 (273 mAh/g), LiNiO2 (274 mAh/g) and TiS2 (239 mAh/g); (ii)it is readily available and cheap; (iii) it is non-toxic and tolerable for the environ-ment. Therefore, TiO2 is a promisidg electrode material for the rechargeablelithium battery. In this paper we describe the preparation of TiO2 nanocrystallinefilm electrodes and report results obtained from X-ray diffraction, SEM, andelectrochemical studies. The effect of current density on the charge storagecapacity of such TiO2 electrodes is analyzed and preliminary results on the cyclelife of such rechargeable battery systems are reported.

2. EXPERIMENTAL2.1. ELECTRODE PREPARATION

Nanocrystalline layers of TiO2 were prepared from either commercially availableTiO2 powder F 387 (Degussa, Hanau, Germany) or from a colloidal paste (C-240)synthesized in our laboratory.

Titanium dioxide powder F 387 obtained by flame hydrolysis of TiCI4 accordingto the manufactures specification consists of 90% anatase and 10% rutile. Thespecific surface area is 82 m2/g and the main impurity is 0.1% CI. The powdercontains aggregates of primary particles, which have to be dispersed for thepreparation of densely packed and well adherent films. This is achieved bygrinding with a small amount of water, resulting in high shear forces that disruptthe aggregates. A titanium chelating agent (e.g., acetyl acetone) stabilizes thecolloidal particles once they are separated. For the experiments reported here,0.6 g of F 387 powder were ground in a small porcelain mortar with 0.2 ml water(Millipore purified) and 20/zl acetyl acetone (Merck, p.a.) to yield a highly viscouspaste. This was diluted by slow addition of 1.8 ml H20 under continued griding.Finally, 10 /zl Triton X-100 (Fluka, p.a.) was added to improve wetting of thesubstrate.

The C-240 colloid was synthesized by using a method described elsewhere.9 Thestarting material of titanium tetraisopropoxide was slowly hydrolyzed at roomtemperature and then autoclaved at 240C at a pressure of 340N/cm2 for 12 h in atitanium container. To form films, the sol was concentrated by evaporation ofwater in vacuum at 25C until a viscous liquid was obtained. Carbowax M-20,000

(40% by weight of TiO2) was added and the final viscous paste had 20% by weightof TiO2.

Titanium sheets of 0.5 mm thickness served as conducting substrates for thenanocrystalline layers. They were etched for 30 minutes in boiling HCI (16%,Fluka p.a.), dried, and covered at two parallel edges with Scotch-tape (40thick) in order to provide the desirable thickness of the coating and protect areasfor electrical contact. A volume of 5/xl/cm2 of the TiO2 dispersion was applied toone of the free edges and spread over the titanium sheet by a glass rod sliding onthe Scotch-tape covered edges. After drying for 10 minutes at room temperaturethe coatings were sintered in air at 450C for 10-30 minutes and then dried at300C and 10-6 tort for 2 hours. The film thickness was between 5 and 10/zm.The sintered and dried layer electrodes were entered directly into a glove boxavoiding any air contact. The amount of TiO2 was determined from the massdifference of the sheet before and after coating.

2.2. ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION

The electrolyte solution was 1 M LiCF3SO3 dissolved in propylene carbonate (PC).The propylene carbonate (Fluka, 99%)was purified by fractional distillation undervacuum and dried over a 4 molecular sieve. LiCF3SO3 (Fluka)was dried at150C and 10-6 torr during 72 hours. The water content in the prepared elec-trolyte solution was below 20 ppm, as determined by Karl-Fischer titration.

2.3. CHARACTERIZATION

The starting powder and films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD).XRD data was obtained by using an X-ray diffractometer Siemens DS500 withCuKa radiation.

The morphology of the samples was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) using a Hitachi S-900 instrument.

2.4. ELECTROCHEMICAL TESTING

Electrochemical experiments employed a conventional three-electrode cell inter-faced to a computer-aided potentiostatic/galvanostatic set-up (PAR EG & Gmodel 273 A). A one-compartment (diaphragrnless) cell was used with the elec-trolyte solution volume about 15 ml. The reference and auxiliary electrodes wereprepared from pure lithium (Aldrich). All experiments were performed in anargon-filled glove box (JACOMEX BS531) whose atmosphere contained less than5 ppm H2 and 6 ppm 02.

3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Fig. 1 shows the XRD patterns of the TiO2-F387 film as well as of its startingpowder, and the nanocrystalline TiO2 film produced from the C-240 colloid. Thediffraction patterns can be attributed to the presence of anatase and rutile phases.In the case of TiO2-F 387, the ratio of diffractional intensity indicates a 9:1

proportion of anatase to rutile. There is no obvious change of the XRD spectrabetween powder and sintered layers. The film of TiO2-colloid presents practicallypure anatase phase.

The primary particle size can be estimated by using the Scherrer equation:

where A is the X-ray wavelength, ill/2 the corrected width of the main diffractionpeak at half height and 19 the diffraction angle. The D values found for the F387powder, the F387 film, and the C-240 film are 12 nm, 13 nm and 10 nm,respectively, indicating that the sintering has practically no influence on theparticle size.

Typical SEM micrographs of the TiO2-F387 and C240-films are shown in Fig. 2.The electrodes are highly textures with open pores and channels. The particle sizeis about 10-15 nm, in accord with the XRD results.

Fig. 3 shows a cyclic voltammogram obtained with the TiOE-F387 film electrodein the presence of I M LiCFaSO3 electrolyte. The pronounced cathodic and anodicpeaks are due to lithium insertion and release respectively. The total cell reactionon discharge and charge is given by the equation:

The voltammetric charge determined by integration of the voltammetric peaksequals 152.05 mAh/g and 197.65 mAh/g for the anodic and cathodic process,respectively. The corresponding stoichiometric coefficients are x 0.45 and x0.59 for lithium release and insertion, respectively. The anodic charge is likely topresent more reliable measure for the Li insertion stoichiometry, since cathodicbreakdown of the electrolyte solution might obscure the true insertion currents atpotentials below 1.5 V. Voltammograms obtained with the C-240 colloidal filmexhibit very similar features to Fig. 3.

Fig. 4 presents galvanostatic discharge/charge curves measured over threecycles for the Li/LiCF3SO3 + PC/TiO2-F387 cell. Experiments were carried outat a current density of 0.01 mA/cm2. The freshly assembled device has anopen-circuit potential of about 3 V. For the first cycle, the final discharge potentialwas 1.5 V while for the other two cycles, it was selected to be 1.4 V. Voltagessmaller than 1.4 V were avoided to prevent cathodic decomposition of theelectrolyte. During the discharging and charging process, pronounced voltageplateaus occur at 1.78 and 1.89 V, respectively, their difference presenting theovervoltage loss. From the ratio of the discharge and charge capacity one derives areversibility of 97% for the cut-off voltage 1.5 V and 91-93% for the cut-offvoltage 1.4 V. This charge unbalance is apparently caused by the cathodic decom-

position of PC and trace water at low cathodic potentials. However, these resultsrender this type of device attractive for high energy charge and storage secondarybattery applications.

Fig. 5 illustrates galvanostatic cycling of the same cell at different currentdensities. As expected, the overvoltage losses increase with current density, al-though the effect is small within the range investigated.

The variation of the charge storage capacity of the nanocrystalline TiO2 elec-trodes with current density is shown in Fig. 6 for final discharge potentials of 1.4and 1.5 V. The charge storage capacity increases with decreasing current density.The highest charge storage capacity was obtained by using a current density of5 /zA/cm2 where C 265 mAh/g corresponding to a Li insertion ratio of

x 0.8. The theoretical limit for x 1 is 336 mAh/g. Based upon the weight ofthe active electrode material and the discharge potential 1.78 V, the cell delivereda specific energy density of 472 Wh/kg (theoretical one is 598 Wh/kg).

Finally, the cycling performance of a Li/LiCF3SO3 + PC/TIO2-C-240 film cellis shown in Fig. 7. The cell was discharged and charged between 1.5 and 3.0 V at arelatively high current density of 0.2 mA/cm2 in order to make the cyclelife test ina reasonable time. The cell delivered an initial charge capacity of 108.8 mAh/g,corresponding to x 0.3, the cell capacity loss being less than 14% for over 100cycles. A visual inspection of the used electrodes showed mechanical cracks in thefilm. We suspect that the capacity loss may be due to the loss of interparticleelectrical contacts. The electrolyte decomposition, mentioned above, is pre-summably less significant since the test was performed with an excess of theelectrolyte solution.

4. CONCLUSIONS

The present study establishes the promising performance of nanocrystalline transi-tion metal oxides in lithium intercalation batteries. The specific porous morphol-ogy of such films offers the advantage of providing a very large internal surfacearea facilitating lithium exchange between the solid and electrolyte phase. Thisallows insertion and release of the Li ions to occur rapidly and reversibly. Thesecharacteristics paired with stable performance under repeated cycling rendernanocrystalline oxides particularly attractive for secondary battery applications.
