Edition 281 — Friday 12 April 2019
From Mr Trent Citrano, Head of School A huge thank you to all of the parents who made it to our Meet the Teachers Evenings over the past two weeks. Coming to these introducto-ry sessions is an important first step in connecting with your child’s teach-er and learning how we can work together as educators and parents to ensure our students’ success. The conversations and questions I heard were positive, productive, and will launch our school year off in a con-structive way.
Additionally, if you haven’t done so already, I
encourage all of our parents to complete the brief online Annual Parent Survey that was emailed to you last week. We greatly value your input as we use it to make MIS better eve-ry year. If for some reason you didn’t receive the email, please go to the following link to
complete the brief survey by April 22. より良

From Mr Anthony Hall, Deputy Head of School Greetings from MIS. In Elementary ICT time this week, students have completed a reading assessment known as the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) - G1 will complete a paper based test, which better suites their learning needs. The test generates information about students’ reading age and a standardised score for their current age. This information is vitally important for teachers at this time of year and will be used in a variety of ways such as: differentiating the difficulty of written materials, creating guided reading groups, creating support groups for lessons, and assigning Oxford Reading Tree books according to reading ability. Who would have thought that data from one test could be put to so many uses?
The students were all fully focussed on doing their absolute best and tried to show their teachers
how much their reading had improved since taking the test last year. The information will be ready
for teachers to use next week and the students will be informed about how well they did in due
course. I look forward to seeing how well our students have done and hearing from the teachers
about the ways they will use the data to support their students learning. If you have any questions
regarding the test outcomes, I am sure that your child’s teacher will be happy to answer them.

Kindergarten News
NANOHANA
From Mrs Ali Haggett, Kindergarten Coordinator
Our week has seen the children commencing their journey into the focus topics for this term. As I walk around the classrooms there is evidence of learning emerging on the walls, books being filled in and a harmonious feeling in the air.
Many of the kindergarten classes participated in planting seeds and plants into the garden. Being involved in the planting the children were exposed to how weather participates in plants growing, how they grow from a seed into a plant
and that water is required for them to grow. This is a strong connection to our current learning topics.
There are many benefits of learning about the growth of plants: height, time, weather, counting, insects and bugs, where food comes from and patience. We look forward to watching the garden change during spring.
Kindergarten Stars of the Week HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

G3 Illustrate the Beauty of Nature
Grade 3 was able to take advantage of the beautiful weather by heading outside for their Art lesson. The students
were able to sketch cherry blossoms as well as other plants and flowers. Students even used magnifying glasses to
capture every detail. What a awe-inspiring time of the year for creating art!

G5G: 3D Printer & Scrappy Circuits! The students in G5G started the new academic year with a scientific team building activity called ‘Scrappy Circuits’. Students got to make their own electrical components using cardboard, paperclips, bulldog clips, LEDs and ‘button batteries’. They then used them to construct circuits, also focusing on cooperation and problem-solving. This week, G5G were also excited to find out their new 3D printer had arrived! Children even chose to stay in at lunchtimes to help assemble it by following the manual and using tutorial videos on YouTube to help when they got stuck. They printed their first 3-D Model - a dog, the new class mascot. There may be some future engineers among us!

G1 Connecting, Problem Solving (and Picnicking) Together! The students in Grade 1 got to know each other a little better by literally connecting and problem-solving on how to
move a hula hoop amongst themselves. The children were so cooperative and creative in support of one another.
They then enjoyed a fun-filled and delicious picnic together in the sun!
