    Introduction

Nanotechnology is the engineering offunctional systems at the molecular scale.

Refers to the projected ability to constructitems from the bottom up, using techniquesand tools being developed today to makecomplete, high performance products.

    Advantages of

Nanotechnology Revolutionize electronic products, procedures, and

    applications.

    Benefit the energy sector.

    Benefit manufacturing sector.

    Medical world: smart drugs.

    Disadvantages

Loss of jobs in the traditional farming andmanufacturing industry.

    Crash of certain markets.

Atomic weapons: more accessible and more

    destructive.

    Inhalation of minute particles.

    Very expensive.

    Nanotechnology in Medicine

Nanotechnology is a new field with

many possible uses, medicine beingone of them

    Nanomedicine

Some medicines are made throughbiotechnological processes, for example

    those using recombinant DNA (human

    hepatitis vaccine)

Under these processes the DNA of living

    creatures (usually bacteria) is altered

    Nanotechnology represents a similar

approach to the manufacture ofpharmaceuticals and other goods.

    Nanorobots: Medicine of the

    Future

    What are they?

Nanorobots are nanodevices that will be

used for the purpose of maintaining and

    protecting the human body againstpathogens.

They will have a diameter of about 0.5 to 3

microns and will be constructed out of parts

with dimensions in the range of 1 to 100nanometers

    Nanorobots

The powering of the nanorobots can bedone by metabolizing local glucose and

    oxygen for energy

Other sources of energy within the bodycan also be used to supply the necessary

    energy for the devices

They will have simple onboard computers

capable of performing around 1000 or fewercomputations per second.

    Nanorobots

A navigational network may beinstalled in the body, which may

provide high positional accuracy to all

    passing nanorobots

This will enable the physician to keep

track of the various devices in thebody
