October, 2014 VOLUME 93 / ISSUE 7, CALVIN COX, EXALTED RULER NAPA CALIFORNIA
MESSAGE FROM YOUR EXALTED RULER
It’s the end of September, summers over,
school has started and fall is in the air. Six
months of my term as your Exalted Ruler is
up. The atmosphere in the Lodge is very
pleasant and everyone is enjoying
themselves. We have had members from all
over the country come by and visit our
Lodge and tell us what a great Lodge we
have and how much they have enjoyed
being here and will come back as soon as
they can. We’ve seen some longtime
members start coming back and enjoying the
Lodge again. It takes all of us to create this
kind of atmosphere so keep up the good
work.
On October 1st we will have our District
Deputy visit by our DDGER Robyn
Sembenini. We are going to put our best
foot forward to make her feel very welcome.
I would like all of you who can to show up
and support her and your Lodge.
For the month of September I chose Vivian
McFarland as the Volunteer Elk of the
Month. She brings in and arranges all the
flowers in the Lodge. She also volunteers for
many other things in the Lodge. There are
so many of you that do so much to keep our
Lodge going, it is very hard to choose just
one for this award. But, believe me your
efforts do not go unnoticed.
We have about sixteen American citizens
waiting to be initiated into our Order. On
Wednesday, October 15th we will initiate as
many as are available at that time. Those of
you who can, please attend and show
support for our new members.
Fraternally,
Calvin Cox

FROM YOUR LODGE SECRETARY Hello all!
We are heading right into the fall season and have a lot of great events coming up!
Any of you that have paid dues for six months, the second half of your dues ($72) is due on October 1st. Please get your dues into me as soon as possible. At this time, we have only 24 members who are delinquent. I would love to see all of them become current. A couple of members have asked me about taking a dimit. You must be a current member to do this.
As always, please do not hesitate to let me know if you have questions or concerns. I am here most weekdays. I will do my best to help you. Please come down and enjoy your Lodge! On Wednesday, October 1st our District Deputy Robyn Sembenini is coming for her visitation. Please come down and support her and your Lodge!

Activities and Events October 2014 I hope all our members are doing well after our Napa Earthquake.
OMG! That was scary.
Quintathalon: As most members know we had to cancel this event because of the Earthquake. We will try again next year and make this event a part of our Jamboree. Italian Night: 9/5/14 A nice turnout and a very nice evening. Many thanks to the Roving Roosters (SIRS) who
hosted this event and cooked the steaks, and Sabine's Italian dinner was a delight and delicious. Also, my thanks to
Tom and Vivian McFarland for the beautiful flowers in the bar, fireplace room and tables. And our faithful
volunteers, Dave, Judy, Len, Jan, Dianne, Lillian and Cathy Fisher. Jeff Wessman was fun and entertaining, we all
loved hearing the old songs of the Italian Crooners. The 50/50 winner took home $100.00, there were door prize
winners, fascistic food, music and fun. Another big thanks to all who attended Italian Night 2014!!!
Patriot's Dinner: Was on Sept. 10th, the evening started with our Boy Scout Troop #832 presenting the colors and
the Pledge of Allegiance. Good job Boy Scouts! Judy and I with the help of Monica showed a fun video from the
late Robin Williams as the American Flag, funny but also very meaningful. We all enjoyed an All American Dinner
of Fried Chicken and topped it off with Apple Pie A la mode. Thank you to my star hanger Tom McFarland, Lindsay
Wanagel for the patriotic tables, and all those helping with Patriot's night.
Purple Pig Garage Sale: More thanks to all who donated to the parking lot garage sale. We collected a variety of
items, everything from dishes, trinkets, pictures, furniture.....this gave our prospective buyers a lot of choices. Also
many thanks to Janis Mousa for chairing this activity and to those volunteers who helped, Marie Narlow, Lorraine
Anderson, Cal & Shelia Cox, Jan Schreiber, The McFarland's , Don Parrish, Bobbie, Dave Silveira and Dwayne
for keeping the drinks and food going. We are pleased to report that #832 will be sending the Purple Pig $930.00+,
good job everyone, successful event.
Luau: Sadly, we had to cancel the Luau, I know many would have enjoyed it. Please remember when events are
posted to purchase your tickets early, it is helpful not only for a head count but also to prepare for the event. Thank
you Tom, Cyrus and Tim for your efforts toward the Luau. The Napa Valley Wine Gift Basket drawing will now be
at the Boo Bash on October 31st.

Napa Elks Lodge Reinstates Annual Lodge Golf Tournament
The Napa Elks Lodge (NEL) will once again be sponsoring a fundraising golf tournament as the Elks Larison Scholarship Fund (ELSF) Trust has discontinued their annual golf tournament effective this year. This Lodge event is open to all Elks and their guests and all families of Junior Golfers who are or become members of the Napa Elks Lodge Junior Golf Club. The NEL Golf Club Committee has negotiated with Napa Golf Course (18 holes), located in Kennedy Park, to hold the tournament on October 22, 2014. Members of the NEL Golf Club Committee are: John Olney (Chair), PER Len Fisher, Tim Horton, Dennis Connolly and Fred Schweizer. We are hopeful of obtaining 40-52 players in this resurrection of the old lodge tournament but can go up to a maximum of 72 players. It was decided that the tournament will played on a Wednesday so that the player awards and silent auction can be held simultaneously with the member dinner and No-host cocktails provided at the Napa Elks Lodge. The golf tournament will be a foursome scramble format with a shotgun start at 12:30 pm. Green fee, cart, entry fee and box lunch cost is $65 per player. Please be sure to submit the player’s reservation form noting lunch preference and should you plan to attend the Wednesday night dinner, choice of Chicken Fried Steak w/ Mashed Potatoes & Country Gravy, OR Baked Salmon w/ Rice Pilaf, veggies, salad and dessert for $18
1. Top team finishers in the men’s, women’s and mixed divisions will receive awards. 2. Each player in a foursome must have no less than three (3) of his/her drives used during the 18 holes of play. 3. Thereafter each player hits their second shot from the selected drive position and this process continues through the fairway to the final putt. 4. Established handicaps will be used to adjust to net scores. Players not having an established handicap will be interviewed and such will be established for use in this tournament only. Golfer ethics and honesty will be relied upon when establishing these artificial handicaps. The Golf Club Committee requests all members to consider making donations of golf related as well as other items such as merchandise (clothing, electronics, gift packs, etc.), wine bottles/cases, dining gift certificates, service gift certificates (salon, massages, accounting, legal, etc.) that can be used for the silent auction to raise charity funds to hopefully be earmarked by the Lodge membership for distribution among all our youth programs (junior golf, scouting, scholarships, Americanism contests, etc).
We need volunteers to assist in collecting donations and checking in the golfers. John Olney can be contacted at: Phone: 707-386-2384 Email: [email protected].

Biography of John D. Amen Grand Exalted Ruler 2014-2015
John D. Amen was born in Denver, Colorado; the third of three sons of Jake and Clara Amen. He was raised in Fort Collins, Colorado and attended public schools there. John was an excellent student and participated in school athletics throughout junior and senior high school. John attended Colorado State University, graduated with honors and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree with a major field of study in General Business in 1970. During his time at CSU, John met and married the love of his life, Marcia. After undergraduate school John accepted employment with Chevron Corporation. Following graduation, with a Juris Doctorate degree, John immediately sat for, and passed the rigorous Colorado Bar exam. After Chevron, John served in various legal and management positions with independent oil and gas exploration and production companies. With Snyder Oil Corporation of Fort Worth, Texas, John served as Vice President of a growing New York Stock Exchange company. Snyder
eventually merged into Devon Energy Corp. In 1988, John left the corporate world and joined the preeminent 17th Avenue law firm of Burns, Wall, Smith and Mueller, P.C. as Special Counsel. After a successful practice representing various oil and gas clients, John retired from the firm in 2004. Since that time John has limited his practice to a part time endeavor serving limited clients. John and Marcia have two children, John Jr. and Jennifer and are further blessed with four grandchildren, Hailey, Hannah, Hope and Hillary. All reside in Colorado. John and Marcia are very proud of their children’s accomplishments. While working in the natural resources field John acquired professional experience working with both legislators and government regulators; so it was natural that John became involved in government relations with the Elks early in his Elkdom career. Serving as Vice Chairman of the Colorado Elks Association from 1997 and later as State Chairman, John led an active team of Elks that served to represent the interests of the Elks at the state and national levels. John recognizes that all of the good works of Elkdom are carried out at the Lodge level and he has been active as a leader of Denver Lodge No. 17 in a variety of capacities. He has served Lodge 17, the “Mother Lodge of the Rockies,” in all of the Lodge chairs. John’s Lodge has honored his outstanding service by bestowing him the honors of “Elk of the Year” and Honorary Life Membership. In addition to his service to Elkdom, John has served many dedicated hours to support and lead the Colorado Elks Association State Major Project: Elks Laradon Hall. This large project serves over 500 developmentally disabled citizens of all ages. John served two full three-year terms on Laradon’s Board of Directors, the last five as its chair, and further served Laradon most recently as a director of its supporting foundation. In 2008, John was elected Third Vice President of the Colorado Elks Association and thereafter served with distinction in each of the three Vice President chairs and then as Colorado Elks State President in 2012. John is a Past District Deputy and served on the Grand Lodge Committee on Judiciary from 2006 through 2013 and chaired this hardworking committee his final two years. “The help we extend to others increases our own riches.” Since his appointment to the Committee on Judiciary, John has been helping the 265 Lodges in Grand Lodge Area 6 with their legal matters. From advising Lodge Officers on statutory procedures and requirements, to helping them with their by-laws and corporate documents, John established many friends and relationships throughout his eight states of responsibility and throughout our Order. John has become a recognized expert on the Law of Non-Profits and taxation of exempt entities. John passionately believes that the principles of Elkdom will guide us through periods of crisis and endorses the concept that maximum effort should be focused on reversing the downward trend in membership. Creative ideas are never scarce with John, particularly when his favorite subject-------Elkdom------is the topic. Elks: Elevating America!
