This is a particularly special week as we celebrate 2019 NAIDOC with the theme of, Voice Treaty, Truth’. Celebrations started with a Formal Assembly last Friday which acknowledged our many talented and courageous students. Thank you to Aunty Lynette Goodwin for delivering the keynote address. There were also some wonderful student performances and two fantastic digital story telling videos. A special treat was the song performed by father and daughter Rodney and Shakira Kelly in Year 7. Parents enjoyed the morning tea provided after. Thanks to all involved in a great event. Monday kicked off the week with a free sausage sizzle at lunchtime served up by the Junior AECG. This was much appreciated by the whole school who enjoyed the treat. The celebrations continued with the Koori Cook-off up on the top oval on Tuesday, organised again by our Junior AECG. The six teams of 5 students cooked up a storm. As one of the two judges sampling the dishes, I can say I was very impressed by the studentsculinary efforts. Thank you to Red Cross and Gadhu Health for supporting this event. The student spectators enjoyed the red, yellow and black cupcakes made by our students in their TAS classes. On Wednesday, a NAIDOC garden was created with native plants donated by the Eurobodalla Shire and planted by a select group of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students, well done. The garden looks fantastic. Things got physical with a touch footy game on Thursday where anyone could come along and play. There was also an AIME workshop on the NAIDOC 2019 theme: Voice Treaty Truthin the hall for Aboriginal students in Years 10 to12 and students of Comparative Indigenous Studies. Congratulations to all those involved in such a great celebration of Aboriginal culture, diversity and inclusion. Another special cultural event was the visit from the Japanese, Adachi High School students who were billeted by our studentsfamilies for a week and provided a wonderful insight into another culture. Thank you to Mrs Rowland for organising this fantastic event. Our students came away again with a place in the State Finals of the Boccia competition. This time with Bronze Medals. Well done all involved. Well done also to Sonny Burgess of Year 7 who competed in the Bournda Environmental Education Centre Bird Calling Competition, came 2 nd overall and got the prize for Best Individual Score by a High School Student. Another notable individual performance by a Year 7 student was Annabel Platt, who placed 7th in the NSW CHS Gymnastic State Championships. The English Faculty organised a live streamed performance of Macbeth for Year 9 from the Sydney Opera House produced by the Bell Shakespeare Company on Wednesday. The Robotics team also put on a demonstration of their skill at Narooma Library Thursday as part of Science Week. I encourage you to get along to the Links to Learning Photographic Exhibition at the Narooma Library which runs for two weeks. The girls involved in this project want to convey the theme of self-empowerment. Our students enjoyed a Careers Expo organised Mr Kenna our Careers Advisor and a reminder that now is a good time for Year 12 to see him about your future options for study and work. Well done to our HSC Music Students who took the opportunity to present their exam performance pieces to a live audience at Club Muzo last Friday. An enjoyable evening. Pressure is on for Year 12 with major works and performances due as they enter the last weeks of their schooling. Good luck with adding the finishing touches to your work. We are very proud of you. Ms Wilson said the Links to Learning program helps students resilience, self-belief and confidence to make the most of their education opportunity. Lydia O'Neill and Bridie Cotton are two students among the group who are excited to share their photography with the community. Lydia loves nature and chose to demonstrate peace and love. "If you don't love yourself, you will find it hard to love others," she said. She has been inspired by her great, great grandmother Florence Munroe. "Granny Munroe was the Tamworth Citizen of the Year and she helped a lot of people," Lydia said. "She wanted to make sure everyone was treated equally and always treated people how she wanted to be treated." Lydia said, “to have confidence in yourself is important to achieve happiness”. Through her sports action photograph, Bridie wants to share a message that "girls can do anything". "For a while I was the only girl in the AFL 14s comp, it was bitter sweet," she said. "I would get frustrated being treated differently on the field. I feel like now, a whole lot more girls are getting into the sport and feeling empowered - they can do anything." As part of the Links to Learning Program, students explore issues surrounding identity, appearance and the impact social pressures can place on young women's self-confidence. The images are presented in the hope viewers choose to embrace their unique personal identity and develop a greater sense of self-worth. The exhibition will run for two weeks. Links to Learning is supported by the Southern Region Business Enterprise Centre. Congratulations girls on this achievement.

Bridie Cotton and Lydia O'Neill discuss their

photography during the photo exhibition launch at

Narooma Library on Tuesday.

LINKS TO LEARNING – YR 9 A group of female Year Nine students at Narooma High School were given a task to decide on and a theme to put their photography skills to the test. The ‘Links to Learning’ program facilitator, Julia Wilson, hopes the community will attend the photo exhibition at

the Narooma Library. It was launched on Tuesday, August 6. Ms Wilson is proud of the student's work and their

chosen theme, "self-empowerment".

Annabel Pratt Yr7 competed in the NSW CHS Gymnastics State Championships earlier this

week. She placed 7th overall representing the South

Coast Region. Well done.

DRAMA

It’s been a busy year in the Drama Department and it’s about to get busier. Year 10 Drama participated in a

Student Theatre Festival in Canberra in Term 2. The class performed two original plays at the Canberra Theatre

Centre. One of these plays, “Occupation Devastation”, written by Year 10 student Raichel Brodie, was chosen by

Merrigong Theatre in Wollongong to be performed as part of it’s Young Playwrights Program.

The Year 12 Drama class will perform their HSC works on Thursday 22 at 7pm in the Drama Room. All are welcome to attend this show. Year 11 and Year 10 Drama will also be staging showcase events in the near future. At the end of Term 4 we will be staging a major a major musical theatre event titled “The Most Amazing Spectacular Variety Show on Earth”. Local primary schools will be invited and there will be shows for our own students and for parents and members of the public.
