PRINCIPAL’S REPORT I would like to express my appreciation for the work completed by Mr Phil Rufus and the leadership team during my long service leave. Reports are being finalised. I have read many positive comments about student progress while reviewing each child’s report. Outstanding Achievement Aiden Butcher has broken the previous school record of 38 metres for 15yr old boys discus. He is the new record holder with a distance of 50.05 metres. The previous record of 38 metres was set in 1984 by D.Wise. Aiden is a national champion and will soon feature on our wall of fame. New Appointments Congratulations to Mr Rufus on his recent appointment at merit selection to the position of Deputy Principal of our school. He brings many skills to the position. Congratulations to Ms Simone Googe who has been appointed as a permanent classroom teacher of hospitality and food technology. Well Deserved Accolades I have received a letter from the secretary of the Narromine Aviation Museum expressing thanks and appreciation for the “wonderful and gracious way in which your students conducted themselves at the opening ceremony for our museum extensions.” A copy of the letter is included for you to read. I have informed Mr Davies that Jackson Clarke is an ex-student, of whom we are very proud. Staff Professional Learning This week staff have participated in an after school three hour workshop focusing on assessment and classroom practice. Several teachers attended a workshop on meeting the individual needs of students within the mainstream curriculum. Assessment will also be a focus of the staff professional learning day at the start of term three. Supporting Students

Our school continues to support students in a variety of ways. Well done to our Aboriginal Education Officer, Mrs Sharron Bulley, who is running a morning breakfast club, where up to thirty students daily are enjoying milo, pancakes etc. As they enjoy breakfast they are able to sit on the newly erected platform in the playground, a result of a construction project led by Aboriginal support worker, C.J. Smyth.

NAIDOC Day A reminder that our NAIDOC celebrations are being held from 11.30am on Friday 1 July. Come along and see our Aboriginal dance group who have been trained by Aboriginal Education Officer, Mark Smith. You will also get to enjoy a variety of activities listed on the enclosed program. Good Luck! Best wishes to our under 16 rugby sevens team who are representing us at a competition to be held at The Kings School Parramatta on 28 June. Thank you to Mr Lance McCabe, Mr C J Smyth and Mrs Davison for supporting our team. Please Contact Us Please don’t hesitate to contact us about any matter of importance to you. Nothing is ever too small to bring to our attention. Angela O’Callaghan Principal

Crossroads Course Our Year 12 students are required by the Department of Education to complete the Crossroads course. It is designed to help senior students address issues of health, safety and wellbeing at a time when they face significant changes and challenges in their lives. Crossroads aims to prepare and support these students as they encounter situations related to identity, independence and their changing responsibilities. Crossroads aims to build students’ sense of empowerment and respect for themselves and others. STUDY TRIP TO WARRUMBUNGLE NATIONAL PARK Year 11 PD/H/PE went on a study trip to the Warrumbungle’s National Park for three days from Wednesday 1 June. We walked over 20km reaching elevations of upwards of 1200 metres above sea level. However, our original plans were altered due to unforeseen weather issues. Perseverance saw us continue on and to our delight we were rewarded with a spectacular view. The trip was a rewarding experience that strengthened team work, and our understanding of outdoor recreation. The excursion was a great physical and learning experience that was only made possible due to the work and effort put in by Mr Hoyle and Miss Battishall. Submitted by - Troy Harding – Year 11 PDHPE student FOOD NEWS Year 12 Hospitality have been coordinating their own coffee shop ‘Coffee Corner’ for the last few terms. The coffee shop has been very popular with teachers. The profits were added to their end of

year formal funds. Students have successfully completed their coffee competencies now and their practical lessons for the remainder of the year will go back to normal. Year 11 Hospitality students have been working hard ticking off competencies while improving their skills in the kitchen. This week they created chicken, bacon and mushroom risotto and banana cake with caramel sauce. This term they have cooked a chicken and vegetable tart with

garden salad, chocolate lava cake and chicken with creamy herb and mushroom sauce. They really are foodies in the making! Year 11 have been showcasing their cooking skills to the whole school each Tuesday, with the introduction of “Tucker Tuesday” to the canteen. Each Tuesday students and teachers have the opportunity to order homemade food from the canteen. This initiative has proven to be very popular and will

continue for the rest of term. Year 11 Food Technology have begun looking at the functional properties of food. In order to better understand the science behind emulsification, they made hollandaise sauce. The students did a fantastic job and all the sauces were successful at the first attempt. The hollandaise sauce was served with eggs benedict three ways. It was delicious! Year 10 Food Technology have been looking at Food Product Development this term. Year 9 Food Technology are studying Food for Special Needs. Both classes have been creating new and interesting foods and adding more recipes to their handwritten cookbooks. HOSPITALITY STUDY TRIP TO SYDNEY

In May, Miss Googe and Mrs Reid took sixteen keen Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students to Sydney to explore the local food establishments and dine on some quality cuisine over three days. We arrived on the afternoon of Tuesday 17 May and walked the short distance to our accommodation. After a brief rest and recoup we walked to Town Hall Station and attempted to travel out to Ryde to the Le Cordon Bleu Hospitality School. However, we realised that getting eighteen individuals on public transport at peak hour was optimistic. We enjoyed dinner at World Square, where students had an array of different cuisines to choose from. After dinner and a brief shop we walked to Adriano Zumbo’s Patisserie for dessert. This was an eye opening experience for many, with an incredible display of culinary skills on show. On Wednesday we headed to the Sydney Fish Markets for a browse of the amazing fresh and locally sourced produce. Some students were fascinated by the array of fresh seafood available. Novotel Darling

Harbour hosted us for a two hour tour of their establishment where we were taken to all areas of the hotel, including the back of house where customers aren’t usually allowed. After the tour we had a three course lunch prepared by the chefs of the Novotel. This meal has been

described by many as the best food they have ever eaten. To quote one student “I never want to leave this place”. Later in the afternoon The William Angliss Institute gave us a tour of their Hospitality School and discussed Hospitality career options over a croquembouche for afternoon tea. Dinner was at Darling Harbour, where students were able to again sample their choice of delicious and different dining options. Thursday saw us travel out to Flemington to tour the Sydney Produce Markets. We were able to sample a range of unique fruit and vegetables, learning about where they are grown and how to prepare them. After sourcing lunch and snacks for the ride home we were on our way back to Narromine, exhausted and having enjoyed many delicious meals. CROSS COUNTRY 2016 On Wednesday 18 May a group of keen runners from Years 7-10 participated in the annual cross country run. The course started and finished at Rotary Park. Congratulations to the students listed below who won their age category. The Western Cross Country Trials are on 15 June at Geurie race course.

WINTER WARRIOR INTERSCHOOL TEAM CHALLENGE 2016 Open to all secondary students, the Winter Warrior Inter School Challenge is a great way for students to increase their strength and agility while developing teamwork and fitness. It’s muddy and tricky and will require all their skill as they compete against each other and the clock to win. The 15km circuit tests teamwork, agility, strength, endurance and fitness. Teams of six go head-to-head with other schools to be named the 2016 Winter Warriors. Prizes will be awarded in three categories – open mixed, open girls and open boys. There will also be a prize for the best-dressed team. The challenge includes a five-kilometre run, followed by a two-kilometre log and cinder block carry, and an 8km, 40-obstacle course complete with a mud run. The event takes part at Lake Keepit Sport and Recreation Centre near Tamworth. Narromine High will be sending teams who are keen for the challenge. The bus will be leaving on Wednesday 10 August and returning on Thursday 11 August. Further details have been distributed to students at year meetings. Any further questions can be directed to Mr. Hoyle by phoning the school (6889 1499).

YEAR 12 CAREERS NEWS Applying directly to UNE for Early Entry 2017 UNE Early Entry applications are open now. This online application is a direct application to UNE and is different to the School recommendation Scheme

which opens early August. Refer to the website below. http://www.une.edu.au/study/study-on-campus/get-early-entry/apply-online Where are they now? Year 12 were fortunate to have three Narromine High ex students share their success stories with them during the week. Maddi Geyer is currently studying Law at UNE, Jono Simmons has combined his Software Design degree at Canberra Uni with a cadetship at the Department of Immigration, whilst Kyall Flakelar is taking a year off from studying medicine at UNSW. Year 12 gained a great insight into university entry, courses, scholarships and university life in general. These students are wonderful ambassadors for our school. We are proud of their achievements. GAP year Instead of directly pursuing employment or attending university, some students choose to engage in a gap year program. A gap year is an opportunity to gain professional or personal experience, accomplish goals, and/or explore one's interests in the year or two following the completion of secondary school. Gap years can range from a number of different experiences, including a career-oriented position within a company to expand career development or a year of travelling abroad to build cultural knowledge. The following websites are just a few of the GAP year programs available. http://www.antipodeans.com.au/Home.htm http://theleap.co.uk/ http://www.projects-abroad.com.au/ http://campamerica.com.au/ http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/education/gap-year/ East Bake Dubbo have six GAP year positions available in 2017. Please see Mrs Davison for more information.
