    On July 12, Deputy Director StanNew berry kicked off an Ames commu-nity retu rn-to-flight (RTF) event in theBldg N-201 auditorium. His talk wasfollowed by special advance showings

    of Space Station (IMAX), wh ich d id n otofficially prem ier on DVD until Ju ly 19.

    Space Sta t ion , produced byLockheed Martin with assistance fromNASA, provides a jaw-drop ping tourof the next step in sp ace exploration: theInternational Space Station (ISS). High-lights includ ed the stations on-orbit con-struction, plus am azing glimpses of crewmembers as they work, exercise or dorou tine tasks such as getting a haircut ordrinking w ater.

    Free popcorn w as also handed out

    to the attend ees at the event. Also show nwere short N ASA films (including a fea-tur e on Ames contributions to return toflight), RTF displays and posters fromthe recent workshop on a new entrepre-neurial parad igm for the InternationalSpace Station.

    In add ition, in conjunction with themovies, NASA items commemoratingreturn to flight were d istributed to em-ployees. These included p ins, a ribbon,a green RTF bracelet and ph otographs.

    A deep appreciation for large,unique structures such as cathedrals,coliseums and bridges has helped oneengineer lead Ames' efforts towardNASA's return-to-flight m ission.

    For the past two-and-a-half years,many researchers, scientists and engi-neers have focused on one common goal:return ing NASA's space shuttle to flight.As the program m anager for the return-to-flight efforts at Ames, John Allmenhas been deeply involved in ensuring asuccessful mission.

    I make sure everybody has the re-sources they need to get their job don e.I track p rogress and help solve any prob-lems that may ariseI am the maincontact with Johnson Space Center,Allmen explained.

    Allmen grew up in Oxnard, Calif.It was a rural community of about50,000 people that primarily deals inagriculture. At least, that is wh at I re-mem ber it as, not sure if it is still like tha ttoday, Allmen chuckles.

    While growing up, Allmen noticed

    large un ique structures. He was inter-ested in cathedra ls, especially large Eu-ropean cathedrals and how they werepu t together. Through studying placeslike Notr e Dame Cathed ral in Paris, thathe says h as the m ost classic flying bu t-tresses and St. Peters Dome with itshoop-stresses, Allmen was always inawe and inspired by the people whodesigned them.

    Ames leading man in our efforts for Return to FlightIn the ear ly 70s, it was th is love of

    structures that brought Allmen to Cal-Poly in San Luis Obispo, where he re-ceived his bachelors degree in ar chitec-tural engineering.

    In college, I took a course in struc-tural analysis of cathedrals and Romanaqu edu cts. The people of that time fig-ured out things by failures that d evel-oped a ru le of thum b. For example withlarge flying buttresses, what did or didnot fall down. We now know it requiresthe accurate resolution of forces, but itamazed m e how they w ere able to buildthese structures without our currenttechnology, Allmen recalled.

    After college, he began w orking forthe Arm y Corps of Engineers in h eavy

    construction. "With them, I was helpingthem concrete the world ." From there,Allmen attend ed the University of Cali-fornia-Berkeley for his m aster's d egreein structural engineering and structuralmechanics.

    "I had government reinstatementrights because I was on a year leave ofabsence to earn my master's. My wifewas working at San Jose State and so wedidn't want to move back to southernCalifornia. We both really liked it here,so I went to w ork for a structural engi-neer for three months and then found a

    job for a civil engineer here at AmesResearch Center. In fact, I didn't evenknow Ames existed before that time."

    Allmen began his NASA career in1974 as a facilities engineer at Am es. Hethen transferred to NASA Headquar-ters for a year and a half, and he re-turned to Ames in 1977 to work on themod ifications to th e N ational Full-ScaleAerod ynam ic Facility (NFAC).

    During his tenure at N ASA Ames,Allmen has held many titles, rangingfrom construction manager to project

    man ager for acoustics on the 40-foot-by-80-foot wind tun nel to assistant bran chand d ivision chief. In recent years, hehas taken on more of the business aspectof various pr ojects. H e also has workedin the areas of new business develop-ment an d developed full cost account-ing algorithm s for the facility.

    When asked what he feels is hisproudest professional achievement,

    Allmen replied: "Completing the re-building of the NFAC. I had one of thebest construction management groupsof people I've ever had w orking on rebuilding the wind tunnel. There were

    outstanding people on the rest of theproject as w ell."

    When asked about personal achievements, Allmen mentions that the birthand raising of his children are the big-gest achievements in his life. Allmen isthe proud father of four children: threeboys, two of wh om are happ ily mar-ried, and one who recently graduatedfrom high school. His daughter, theyoun gest of the four, will be a senior inhigh school this fall. He also has twograndchildren.

    Allmen is committed to a life ofitness and good health. When he isaway from the office, you may find himat the gym o r on a 40-to-60-mile road ormoun tain bike ride. During the winterhe loves to go skiing. I find eating w eland being healthy creates a lot of posi-tive experiences in my life. It helps tohave a better attitu de abou t life.

    For those wh o w ant to lead a healthyand hap py lifestyle, Allmen offers thesewords of encouragement: One needsto ask themselves: What do you wantout of life? How do you wan t to feel?

    You might ask, how do you wan t yourclothes to fit? In order to achieve whatyou w ant in life, you n eed to set goals foryour self. A partn er can be essential forencouraging one another and havingfun together.

    If you wou ld sit down w ith Allmenyou will notice his love for life, familyand a fulfilling career. H is friends w oulddescribe him as a genuinely nice person

    When a sked if he could do it all overagain, whether he w ould p ick engineering as a career, he replied, Instead of

    engineering, I'd probably go into teaching, if it paid as w ell. I enjoy teachingbut I think I would probably still be anengineer. It's in my blood and in mypsyche.

    David Morrison, senior scientistat the NASA Astrobiology Institute,

    presented NASA's efforts to locateand identify n ear-Earth asteroids thatcould p ose an impact hazard to Earth.

    Rusty Schweickart, an Apollo 9as t ronaut , presented the B612Found ation's innovative and excitingplans to demonstrate how impact haz-ards to the Earth could be ad dressedby changing the orbit of an asteroid'spath. Local amateur astronomers setup their telescopes for the public toview impact craters on the moon andother celestial bodies. The event alsofeatured exhibits and hands-on ac-tivities for the entire family.

    Ames family nights are sponsoredby the N ASA Ames Edu cation Officeand are designed to engage the com-munity in scientific exploration andto inform the p ublic about N ASA re-search and technology. The next fam-ily night will be held in Septem ber.

    A team of researchers recently re-vealed it has discovered the smallestplanet yet foun d orbiting a normal staroutside the solar system, thanks to anew computer program d eveloped u n-

    der the guidance of a NASA astrono-

    mer.The team studied irregularities in

    the motion of two known giant extra-solar p lanets circling th e star Gliese 876and its motion to ded uce the presence ofa third planet in that system, accordingto a scientific paper submitted for pub-lication in th e Astrop hysical Jour nal. Anextra-solar p lanet is a planet tha t orbitsany star other than the sun.

    "The mathematical techniques arevery complicated, but suffice it to saythe new compu ter program includ es theinteractions of the planets with one an-other, not just their individual interac-tions with the star," said team memberJack Lissauer, an astronomer at NASAAmes. "Because the interactions of thetwo biggest planets with each other areso large, this effect needed to be ac-counted for in ord er to reveal the exist-ence of the third (smaller) planet,"

    The newly discovered planet isabout seven-and-one half times moremassive than Earth and may w ell havetwice its radius. One of the two giant

    planets orbiting Gliese 876 has a masshalf that of Jupi-ter. The other gi-ant p lane t i smore than twiceas massive as Ju-piter, accordingto astronomers.The red star is anM-type, wh ich isc o n s i d e r a b l ycooler than thesun and about a

    third of its mass.The new

    com put e r p r o -gram uses 'dy-namical model-ing,' which pre-dicts the motionof p lane t saround a s ta r .This techniqueaccounts for theg r a v i t a t i o n a ltugging of plan-

    ets on one an-other."This calculation is done on a com -

    pu ter workstation," Lissauer explained."We did the dynamical modeling atNASA Ames and at the University ofCalifornia at Santa Cruz (UCSC) sup-ported by a university/ NASA Amesconsortium agreement," Lissauer added .The California-Carnegie planet searchteam -- led by Geoffrey Marcy, Univer-sity of California, Berkeley; and PaulButler, Carnegie Institution of Wash-ington -- made the observations.

    "Eugenio Rivera of UCSC devel-oped the program," Lissauer said. Heguided Rivera, who condu cted h is doc-toral thesis research at Ames withLissauer. "Without this sophisticatedcomputer program, the small, thirdplanet would have taken much longerto discover," Lissauer ad ded .

    "We're going to observe this star tosee if we can find ou t more information

    about its three known planets, andwhether there may be more d istant planets in that system," Lissauer said. "Weare also going to app ly these techniquesto other stars to attempt to discover

    planets even more like Earth," he add edBecause the newly discovered p lanet

    orbits the star Gliese 876, it has beendesignated as Gliese 876 d. The star isabout 15 light years from Earth. Theteam is only able to determine theplanet's mass, but not its compositionaccording to Mark Marley of NASAAmes. Marley is not a member of theteam, bu t is one of Lissauer's colleagues

    All known p lanets smaller than th enewly d iscovered w orld are solid bod-ies, and those larger are gaseous.

    According to the team, data indi-cate that the planet very closely orbitsthe star, a s close as 10 stellar radii, wh ichis less than a tenth of Mercury's orbitabou t the sun . Gliese 876 d zip s aroun dits star every two days.

    "This discovery whets our collec-tive appetite for discovery of evensmaller p lanets," Marley said . "This extra-solar planet d etection gives u s confidence that even lower m ass, more clearlyEarth-like planets await discovery byeven more capable ground and space

    based techniqu es," he said.NASA's Kepler mission, schedu ledto launch in June 2008, will be able todetect true Earth analogs planets notonly the size of Earth but at the samedistance from their stars as Earth is fromthe sun.

    In May, the Hispanic Advisory Com-mittee for Employees (HACE) ChairEric Kristich attended and sponsored anENLACE gradu ation at Evergreen Val-

    The SimLabs' primary mission isto provide high-fidelity environmen tsfor simulated flight research and toadvance state-of-the-art of simu lationtechnology.

    NASA annnounces aerospace systems modeling selectionThe SimLabs also w ork on air traffic

    control/ managem ent to solve the ca-pacity problems of the nations airports.

    SAIC will be respon sible for op era-tion, development, maintenance andmod ification of the SimLabs; successfulpreparation and operation of the simu -

    lators; collection of research data, asspecified in the task ord er; the continu -ing opera tion and up grad e of facilities.

    SAIC also will be responsible fordevelopment, testing an d validation ofadvan ced air traffic management auto-mation tools being developed in theSimLabs.

    The total estimated cost plus feefor the base p eriod is $28.9 million. Thecontract value, including all awardterms and fees, is $62.1 million. Thebase period is five years and there areaward term incentives for up to anadditional five years. The phase-in

    In previous years, DEVELOP stu-dents h ave stud ied the risk of West Nilevirus infection in Monterey County,Calif; the spread of an invasive plant

    species, tall whitetop, on the PyramidLake Paiute Reservation in Nevad a; thecarbon bud get of the Fremont-WinemaNational Forest in Oregon; and the in-festation of salt cedar (Tamarisk) innorthwestern N evada.

    This summ er, a team of DEVELOPinterns is assessing ecological change inYosemite Nationa l Park, chan ge wh ichis increasingly important to park man-agers. Fire has a fun damen tal role inchanging the land scape and affecting anecosystem . Yosem ite's fire histor y isextensive w ith nu merous lightning-ig-

    nited fires occur ring every year. Theresearch objective for this project is toassess vegetation change utilizing re-mote sensing techniques at three p ost-fire sites where fires burn ed in the parkin 1989, 1990 and 1996.

    Multi-temporal Land sat satellite im-agery is being used to detect changes inforest regeneration. In addition, field-work was cond ucted at selected sites inthe park to d ocument forest stand char-

    acteristics. Measuremen ts and estimateswere performed by identifying domi-nan t species, measuring tree height, treediam eter, estimating vegetation percentcover and collecting GPS coordinates.

    Remote sensing methods in conjunctionwith the fieldwork will evaluate andquantify reforestation at p ost-fire sites.

    Fifteen-meter-resolution ASTERdata will be used to better identify changepatter ns for specific species. The resultsof this study will be presented to re-source managers at Yosemite NP andwill aid th ese man-agers in fire man-agement dec i -sions.

    A DEVELOP student team at Ameshas ru n an accuracy assessment on UtahState Universitys predictive coveragemaps for 2002 as well as producing a2005 predictive coverage map using

    MODIS imagery from 2004 for specificdates. These map s prod uced by thestud ents in conjunction with field wor kin Utah w ill help assess the accuracy offield data collected by the SouthwestRegional Gap Analysis Project, a p rojectbeing run in New Mexico, Idaho andUtah to ascertain extent of cheatgrassinfestation in these states.

    In the th ird p roject, DEVELOP stu-dent interns at Ames have worked with

    the California Integrated Waste Management Board's (CIWMB) SpeciaWaste Division to create a proof-of-concept pr oject investigating the u se of high-resolution satellite imagery for locating

    and map ping w aste tire disposal sitesThese sites used as test cases are in theSonoma and San Bernardino regions oCalifornia.

    Previous method s for locating w astetire disposal sites in California includ edcontracting California Highway Patroto fly over susp ected sites and take p ho-

    tographs, which were georeferencedwith a GPS in post processing, a methodlacking accuracy. The method ologyand/ or outputs generated from analysis of the imagery couple with grou ndtruth evaluation of the analysis couldredu ce the time and cap ital necessary toman age waste tire sites. These siteswh en left un kempt, pose threats of combustion and run the risk of becomingbreeding ground s for mosqu itoes.

    The DEVELOP program preparesthe student interns to explore our hom eplanet. The program gives stud ents experience in planning stu dies, executingthose plans, interacting with custom ersfor their prod ucts and h anding off theresults of their studies to their custom-ers and other interested p arties.

    Peter Schultz, pr ofessor of geologi-cal sciences at Brow n University and co-investigator for NASA's Deep Impactmission, travels to the Vertical GunRange at Am es to simu late cosmic colli-

    fires marble-sized beads, even meteor-ites; into sur faces ranging from ice andsand to du st and mud .

    The projectiles, which travel morethan 10 times faster than a speedingbullet, make craters of all shapes andsizes.

    Schultz studies the collisions andthe craters' sprays of debris, the diam-eter and d epth of depressions to und er-stand the forces that shaped features onplanets such as Earth, Mars and Venu sas well as satellites such as the moon .

    As NASA turns its attention topreparing for human travel to themoon and Mars, there are manyhurdles to overcome.
