On the eve of NASCAR’s 69th year as the nation’s premier stock-car racing sanc-tioning body, here’s what we know for sure.

The season will open in Daytona and close in Homestead.

Oh, and this.It will be Tony Stewart’s last year and Chase

Elliott’s first in the Sprint Cup Series. What is it that we don’t know? Only everything else. How can it be, you might ask, that we’re so certain

of this? How do we know there’s so much we don’t know? Maybe because, through the past 68 seasons of NASCAR racing, the sport is roughly 68-for-68 when it comes to not only delivering the unpredicted, but

the unpredictable.Who had the 2015 champion missing the first 11

races and eventually winning the title with his left foot and right leg held together by Aisle 12 from Ace Hardware? Who suspected such an event would be the catalyst for another update in the ongoing safety revolution?

The demise of Michael Waltrip Racing? The two-race suspension of Mild Matt Kenseth, whose Feuding

Fenders saga with Joey Logano delivered the type of fireworks that long ago turned NASCAR into real-life, real-time, really dangerous reality television on a weekly basis? Who had Stewart tripping his right-side blinker and veering toward the exit ramp?

Away from the racing groove, and maybe most importantly, who had NASCAR coming to terms, however grudgingly, with something called the Race Team Alliance? That one will continue into this year and, you know, quite likely change the entire busi-ness model of a sport that’s basically run the same way it was designed in the top-floor lounge of Daytona Beach’s Streamline Hotel in December 1947.

With that in mind, a final toast to 2015 and a pop-ping of the cork for 2016, which brings a handful of certainties worth noting.

Gibbs fielded last year’s champi-onship team (Kyle Busch’s No. 18) while Penske’s No. 22, piloted by Joey Logano, had perhaps the best all-around year, which included the season-opening Daytona 500 victory.

Other longtime team owners, as they did last year, are hoping for an uptick. Jack Roush is looking for answers, Richard Childress is looking for Victory Lane.

Both know what it’s like to field a champion. Nowadays, they’re just trying to get back in the lead pack on a weekly basis.

Can Jimmie Johnson win that seventh championship? Can Tony Stewart go out with a (positive) bang? Can Danica Patrick slide over into the passing lane? It’ll all start at Daytona with the type of dramatics guaranteed with a restrictor-plate rule that packs all cars together, in tight formation, at about 200 mph. The winner will be both lucky and good.

It’ll end about nine months later as you’re finalizing Thanksgiving plans. In between, who knows?

The NASCAR racing season begins at Daytona International Speedway, and most drivers agree that Speed-weeks is an experience onto its own.

“You almost separate Speedweeks in gen-eral from the season,” driver Martin Truex Jr. said. “It’s such a big, prestigious race you really are focused in on winning it.

“We’ll go to Daytona and do all we can to win the Daytona 500. I don’t know how awe-some it would be to win that race, but I’ve seen what it’s done to other people and what it means to their career. It’s a race you want to win.”

There is a new and expensive wrinkle to this season’s racing program over the 2.5-mile tri-oval at Daytona. Race fans can expect a totally new experience.

Unique spectator experienceSpectators will be greeted by

a nearly mile-long motorsports stadium, the first of its kind in the world, which cost $400 million and took more than 2½ years to construct.

Contractor Barton Malow broke ground on the project on July 8, 2013, and the stadium received its certificate of occu-pancy on Jan. 12, 2016.

The 150-foot tall structure features five primary entrances dubbed “fan injectors” and loads of “vertical transportation,” such as escalators and elevators, which will whisk fans to one of three concourse levels.

Each level has open areas in the concourses called “neigh-borhoods,” where race fans will

find a variety of food and drink choices plus a courtyard with tables and chairs.

The concourse areas will offer free Wi-Fi, so fans can keep up with family friends on social media platforms, or just surf the web.

The Speedway will have more than 1,600 flat screen televisions posted in the stadium so fans will never miss one minute of action happening on the track.

And unlike the old grandstand, if there is rain, spectators can take cover in any concourse, which all have cover.

A decade of workOver the last decade Daytona

International Speedway, owned by International Speedway Corp. and the family of NASCAR founder William H.G. France, has been transformed.

It started with a new garage, Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center Ford, talks with Greg Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M Ford, during the Daytona Rising groundbreaking ceremony at Daytona International Speedway on July 5, 2013, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Daytona Rising.“I’d never even been to Day-

tona until three years ago, but it’s definitely taller and bigger now,” the 23-year-old driver said during a recent test session.

“I’d like to go up there into the breezeway and check it out. I’ve heard it’s spectacular. Once I get on the other side, I’ll see all the changes and how cool they are.”

‘The finest experience in the world’

Jim France, 71, who is chairman of International Speedway Corp., finished the installation of the final seat (of 101,500) in the new stadium on Jan. 19.

“This is one of the most spec-tacular motorsports facilities that I’ve ever seen in my life,” France said. “I’ve been to many places around the world and nothing compares to this.”

Jim France is the son of Bill France Sr., who founded NASCAR in 1948, built the mammoth

Daytona track in 1958. It opened for business in February, 1959 with the running of the inaugural Daytona 500 and several other support races.

“I think this is something my father would have been proud of,” France said. “This is the kind of thing he would have brought about.

“The process we’ve gone through over several years, such as improve the garage area and fan experience and repaving the track. We spent $400 million for the fan part of this venue. This is all for the fans.”

Daytona Rising stretches almost a mile along International Speedway Boulevard, which is the primary, gateway highway into Daytona Beach, Florida.

“The fans coming here are in for a real treat,” France said. “Any-body coming to Daytona Beach for a motorsports event will find this the finest experience in the world.”
