A Note from the President

We are coming to the end of our 2015 season, ‘Murder They Wrote’, five very different plays with murder as the theme.

Dial M for Murder finished its successful season on October 3 and rehearsals

are in full swing for the final production, The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery. This play, sometimes referred to as The Farndale Avenue HETGDSMM or simply Farndale, promises to be a hoot and a perfect start to the holiday season. We are launching our 2016 season after the opening night show on Saturday November 14 so please come along and be one of the first to find out what is in store for next year. Here is a hint: None the wiser? All will be revealed on the night!

Brenda White

Nash Theatre AGM: 2pm on Saturday 12 December 2015 in the Play Shed, followed at 3pm by the Nash Christmas party also in the Play Shed.

A glimpse behind the scenes during a rehearsal of Farndale Avenue in the Play Shed: Director Gilly is writing her ‘notes’ for the cast. Stage Manager Jan is setting a rehearsal prop (the crucial chess board!), briefing crew member Steve, and discussing handbags with Philippa.

Who can Emily and Lisa be listening out for? Oh, it’s me, but I’m offstage! Crew member Susie is sorting out props –there are many props to wrangle in Farndale Avenue… Meanwhile, Rob has a reflective moment (!) studying his script. This is such a fun play to be in. We can’t wait to share it with our lovely Nash audiences.

The Nash Profile

Gilly Graham is a Nash Theatre Committee member, actor and Director. We are glad Gilly travelled half way around the world from England to find us! Currently Gilly is directing our show, Farndale Avenue, which opens on 14 November. Of all the gin joints etc., why Brisbane? And why Nash? I’ve lived in Australia, based in Brisbane since 2009, when I came to join my daughter and her young family – there’s no going back for me now! I’ve been involved in community theatre for more than two thirds of my life and I cannot imagine that ever changing. It was a simple task finding Nash – I sought a group before leaving the UK and the Nash website proved the best for all my requirements! The rest is history! Your first experience of theatre? A play at school about the early life of Joan of Arc, I played a knight who had the hots for Joan – it was an all-girls school! It was not until my early 20s that I took things more seriously and joined a local drama group and that’s when things got serious! Drama groups aren’t taken quite so seriously in the UK as they are here in Australia, or at least that’s my perception. There certainly seems more opportunity here to break into the professional world. Whatever the reason it has been good to embrace and continue my love of theatre here in Brisbane with Nash Theatre. What’s your take on amateur drama? In my life I have been extremely lucky to have been involved in more productions than any professional performer and as an amateur that is a far more challenging experience than a paid professional – the amateur does not have the luxury of an eight hour day at rehearsals and learning one’s part. We fit it in between the kid’s naps, in college breaks or after work, but it’s a challenge worth pursuing. When I first became involved in the theatre on a regular basis I was a young mum looking for an outlet from the daily grind. Now, full circle, I am a working grandmother juggling a busy work life, other interests apart from the stage and two very lively grandchildren, one of whom knows nearly every line from Nash’s latest production – what comes around goes around! So, do you prefer treading the boards or being in the Director’s chair? It’s really only in the last ten years that I have turned towards directing. I love being on stage, but quite frankly getting older poses limitations in the recall of all those precious words! Shakespeare is a joy to learn as the older actor and I would love the opportunity to participate in more productions by the Bard even though I’m now too old to play Juliet (I never have!). Directing is a great joy and provides a totally different measure of gratification. If you were to press me however, and with no restrictions, I would always choose the actor’s side of the lights! Your idea of a perfect day is… Sleeping in and being woken with the perfect cuppa, brunch on the bay with magazines and papers to hand, NO production planning and Hugh Jackman joining me for afternoon cocktails!
