PRESIDENT’S REPORT (Alex Garlin) The last 6 months has been the most informative period of my Presidency in as much as assisting members to obtain their entitlements to white and gold cards through DVA. Three of my navy mates are now in possession of gold cards. At the National Service Remembrance Day at Wacol on the 14th of February we entertained His Excellency, the Honourable Governor of Qld Paul de Jersey and Mrs Kaye de Jersey, representatives of the State Government and Opposition, official heads of the Navy, Army and Air Force, and our Patron Cr Angela Owen, the National President Earle Jennings and wife Yvonne. Representatives of the RSL and SED also attended. All Presidents from the South East laid wreaths for their deceased members and their brothers in arms. I look forward to being able to repeat this service again next year. The laying of the wreath at our memorial was a very moving experience, one I will cherish for the rest of my life.

We catered a hot lunch for 215 Nashos and their wives plus guests in the Everyman’s Hut. This building is air conditioned but it was such a hot day the air conditioning was struggling to keep the building cool. I would like to extend my appreciation and thanks to Col and Joyce Waite, Steven and Robyn Milner and Barry Loose for their unwavering support for the work they carry out at Wacol. Our office is maintained by Tony Stevenson and his ever willing staff. It is run like a good Swiss watch. I wish to extend my compliments and thanks to Vince Crowley for his untiring work as a Minute Secretary and Newsletter Editor and also John Hardy for his work in preparing the Branch News. I would also like to thank Stephen Sheridan for his work compiling the membership cards and lists to all branches. Last but not least my sincere thanks to our ever vigilant Treasurer Neal Freier and his untiring efforts in keeping our association in a healthy and financial condition. To all National Servicemen who have supported our committee through the year, I extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for your untiring efforts. My Vice President Warren Cockburn is suffering with cancer. Len Matthews has had trouble with his hip and other ailments. Also Neal like me has had skin cancer and knee work done. With reference to DVA enquiries please be advised that questions about the white card and travel is only to be used for service related complaints that you have been accepted by DVA for. It is not open to all travel as some individuals seem to think. The white card is only to be used for travel to the doctor for your listed complaint. When attending an advocate make sure that they sit and listen to you and fill out the forms.

TREASURER’S REPORT (Neal Freier)Hello fellow Nashos and members. Since my last Nasho News Report, I have presented all financial books etc. to the Auditor and received a good report which I presented and explained to our members at our recent General Meeting. It is great to feel financially comfortable, but I will remain frugal with our finances to ensure that we never have to struggle again. I want to thank all branch treasurers for sending in their annual financial reports on time. I only had to chase up one branch. So now the work of consolidating all these reports begins. When I delivered my financial report to our members I again made mention of Welfare funds. One of the main objects of our association is the welfare of our own veterans. Every full member is a veteran as declared by the Department of Veteran Affairs. I am pleased to see some branches really look after their elderly or sick members from their Welfare accounts

and disappointed to see other branches not doing it.Quite a few branches, including my Bayside Branch, give an immediate amount of money to the wife/partner of a deceased full member to assist with funeral costs. If a full member is hospitalized, money is immediately given to the wife/partner to assist with many costs, including transport, parking, getting the lawn mowed and many other things. Safety rails are organized to be placed in homes - wheel chairs supplied and so the list goes on. – bus trips and social outings are also welfare for our members. As we age, our welfare needs increase. Most of our branches are reasonably financial because they have raised funds through badge selling – sausage sizzles – raffles – and Grants from a number of sources. So I urge those branches that are not looking after their members through their welfare funds to start doing it. Time is running out for all of us so look after each other.Well that’s it for this edition. I hope everyone is in good health and happy. Remember – be kind to each other!

DAWN SERVICE 2014© Michael Anderson

It was nothing new to wake early. It was, though, a feeling, a feeling almost tipping into emotion, that permeated my being.

Quietly, I dressed, collected my keys and set off on the twenty minute easy stroll to the War Memorial Window to pay my respects and to be in communion with others who wanted to offer silent appreciation to those who fought to keep this land a free and peaceful home. There are those who would never know that freedom or peace, and there are those, fewer now, who march to honour those comrades who fell to the hot lead of the enemy or who have succumbed to the condemnation of the years and the ills that those years-are wont to bequeath .

The walk was uneventful. There was more traffic than normal, but that’s to be expected as others, some in official capacity, made their way to be a part of the service. Approaching my destination I passed the silent flowing silver-grey river on its westwards journey. The air had a cleansed aroma giving clue to light showers some distance off.

Preparations for the service were complete. The men and women who dedicated their time and energies to make sure all went smoothly could not have anticipated the role Mother Nature intended to play. It could be taken that The Lord Himself wanted to add to the solemnity of the ninety ninth anniversary of the ill-fated Gallipoli landing.

The sky was leaden. Not heavy cloud, but enough to veil the waning Easter moon and the stars. Some in the growing crowd spoke of driving through rain. Across the eastern horizon the nimbus showed cracks, open wounds in the cloud, to allow the rays of the dawn to struggle through to those of us waiting below. Above the Services Club’s entrance, the sentinel flagpoles were draped in the Australian flag and that of the United Kingdom. In the still pre-dawn drab neither standard twitched, let alone flutter.

The chairs set out for the elderly and frail. The sound system tested. The Parish Priest, who is the RSL Padre, spoke in a relaxed manner to members of his flock. Soon his words would be words of respect and thanksgiving to be offered in prayer, a prayer echoed by all in attendance.

Anticipation peaked as in the distance and order was issued, a snare drum’s rattled staccato like a muffled machine gun and the bag-piper’s instrument issued the first rousing notes of Waltzing Matilda. Was anybody’s blood not stirred? The pipe band played on past the War Memorial Window as the marchers were wheeled to take their place proudly in front to the Window. As the troop concluded its march and the last notes of the bagpipes faded from the ears of the assembled an almost chilling, funeral warble from a pair of magpies perched above the nearby eucalypt spread an invisible blanket over all in antendance.

Still the rain held off.

Everyone’s attention was focused on the Window as the invitation was issued to join in the hymn traditionally sung at ANZAC Services, Abide With Me. The Padre’s prayer was offered and with mist forming, in my eyes at least, The Dedication was made leading into Laying of the Wreaths.

The call was made to Diggers, the Officials and those who had assembled, to pay respects and display gratitude, to face the west. The bugle sounded The Last Post. A minutes silence observed as tears rolled down the cheeks for those who have been in silence for the past ninety-nine years. With the recitation of the Ode of Remembrance who were instructed to turn to the east as the bugle sounded Reveille. To conclude, all sang with a humble pride, for that’s the only way I can describe the way we sang the National Anthem, humbled by the occasion, proud to be Australian.

Dawn had by this stage broken. To the south-west the rain was visible. The cracks in the clouds to the east had widened to permit early morning light to fall on the assembly.

To counter-balance the sad note of the magpies earlier, a bright and positive addition to the final words of Advance Australia Fair was the uplifting flight-song of a couple of native parrots as they flew between the flag poles overseeing the Service from above the concourse where those who returned, and those who live the benefits of the fallen were gathered as one.

Softly a drizzle fell.

With the risen sun now penetrating through the disintegrating cloud, a full one hundred and eighty degrees of a rainbow arched its misty firmament,

Maybe it was the occasion, maybe it was imagination or maybe a marriage of both, but that coloured arc high in the high, grey western morning sky ignited a memory of the Biblical Genesis story of the flood. How God made the rainbow, following the forty days and nights of rain, as a reminder that never again would He destroy the earth. While He has remained true to His promise, it must have seemed to the countless souls on may sides in many conflicts that He had abandoned them. Still the Covenant held firm.

I felt small.

The walk to the Dawn Service was a walk of anticipation, The walk home was one of reflection. Each day I give thanks to those who fought to keep this country peaceful and free. As circumstances have it, I have never been in the situation that those remembered were in. I thank them for that.

Quite a few years ago I attended a Dawn Service where there more marchers than members in the crowd. In 2014 those in attendance numbered in the hundreds. Gathered around the War Memorial Window in the car park, on the footpath, and filling the adjacent street. After ninety-nine years we do remember them…..Lest We Forget.

NASHO DAYSJohn Mitchell, D Coy Wacol 1/1951

Regardless of that old expression ‘It seems like it happened yesterday’ receiving that call-up letter seems a long time ago. My first thought was to ignore it. ‘You cannot do that’ advised an older more wiser friend. ’You could face a firing squad. Look what they did to Breaker Morant’

So on the 6th of August 1951, the very first intake of the new National Service scheme found me at Kelvin Grove Barracks for an hour or so before being taken by bus to Wacol. Some aspects of our new camp looked as if it had only finished being put together yesterday, while others looked as if hadn’t yet been finished. We were the first, the guinea pigs. Later intakes had the advantage of learning from their mistakes with us. But they were determined to make soldiers of us. Uniform collection was next. Not as bad as some of the jokes about sloppy fittings. A quick look around, lunch and dinner and next day it got serious. We quickly learned that the ARMY owned us and it was easier to go with the flow. If you didn’t you were a fool. Exercise was basic and did not do us any harm. Likewise with marching and plenty of it.

Home was a large army tent on stumps about 2 feet above the ground holding 10 or 12 along each side of a walkway. Single metal framed bed, a side cupboard and space on the rifle rack was our furniture. We quickly got used to the Sarge politely greeting us at 6am every morning. Roll call, breakfast and off to training for the day. We had the lot WW1 .303’s bayonets for charging the dummies, unarmed combat, bren guns and grenades and more marching.

My unforgettable grenade story must be told. Our day of training with dummy grenades was a piece of cake. Simple as bowling at cricket. The next day with live ammo was different. Naturally, we lined up in single file in the slit trench and one by one ended up in the throwing bay, with Sarge standing by to help. I was the next in line to enter for a toss of a live grenade, watching the chap about to toss his grenade. He pulled the pin, then dropped the live grenade on the ground, and here I was right at the entrance to the bay. Quick acting by the Sarge who grabbed it and tossed it. It exploded in mid-air, far enough away not to cause any damage. We all felt sorry for our mate who must have had an attack of the nerves. I had my turn next, carefully, with no problems except a bit of washing. Johnny rode his motorbike back from his first leave. Tragically he had an accident and was killed. Our tent was suddenly one man short.

Once we were ‘broken in’, time and training moved along at a reasonable pace. Our three months was nearing the end. The last day included the Marching Out Parade to which family members had been invited. The night before, some bright spark in our tent (D Company) suggested we raid B Company’s closest tents, just across a vacant piece of land. Grabbing anything that would hold water, like Vikings of old, we ran and raided. However, I stood heavily into an open posthole, did not get to the raid and struggled slowly back to our tent. It gave me hell all night. No possible chance of me marching in any parade, instead I lined up for sick parade. “You weren’t one of those idiots in that raid last night, were you” the medic asked. “No sir”, I replied, being on the 25 pounders “ I did it on the gun spike, sir”. I know he did not believe me, but let it go at that. For years I had trouble with that Nasho knee.National Service was an enjoyable experience, pity it ceased as I am proud to be a Nasho, even at 85 years old

National Service Day 2018National Servicemen’s Day celebrations were held at the Wacol Precinct on Wednesday 14th February. With an attendance of well over 200 guests, including the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC and Mrs de Jersey, Na-tional President Earl Jennings and many distinguished guests, the service paid tribute to the service and sacrifice of all National Servicemen. The Catafalque Party was provided by No 215 Squadron AAFC, Carindale.

The Governor’s address paid tribute to all those who had served at home and overseas and he passed on his thanks and the thanks of every Queenslander to all those who had served during both National Service periods. Wreaths were laid at the memorial stone outside the Wacol chapel. The Governor and Mrs de Jersey laid the first wreath followed by representatives of the Navy, Army, Air Force and Queensland Police Service, State and Local Government, the RSL and Veterans Affairs. Branch Presidents or their representatives also laid wreaths on behalf of their members.National President, Major Earl Jennings AM, RFD, ED (Retd) and State Media Officer, Allan Callaghan, paid a special tribute to end the wreath laying service. Each placed a poppy on the memorial stone. The two pop-pies were part of the original wreath laid at the opening of the National Servicemen’s Memorial in Canberra in 2010. That wreath contained 212 poppies, representing the 212 National Servicemen who had paid the ulti-mate sacrifice. The two special poppies will remain on display at the Wacol Precinct Museum.Following the service guests entered the Everyman’s hut for lunch. Two hundred and fifteen guests were treated to a beautiful lunch and all ladies present were given a raffle ticket for prizes to thank them for their continued support and to wish them a Happy Valentines Day.Following the lunch our State Patron, Cr Angela Owen, spoke firstly on a project she is helping to initiate in Australia. The project is called “Brothers in Arms” and is aimed at honouring all those groups of brothers who fought in WW1. A memorial is being built at Polygon Wood in Belgium and will be opened on Remembrance Day 2018. The aim is to have plaques, with the brother’s names on them, placed on the memorial over time. More on that project as details become available. Cr Owen then presented each Branch President present with a bag of “100 year celebration” coffee beans. The coffee beans have been packaged with a tribute to all service personnel on the back and front of the package.

PLAQUE FOR NASHOS KILLED DURING TRAININGIt is proposed to dedicate a plaque to those Nashos who died during their initial training or within first

two years of CMF. The dedication will be made at the 2019 National Service Day Service at Wacol. If you know of any Nashos who fall into either category would you please contact the President, Alex Garlin on

[email protected] or mobile 0417 621 411.

SUMMARY OF STATE MEETINGSOn the weekend of 24/25th March 2018, three State Meetings were held at the Wacol Heritage Precinct. The first meeting was the Delegate’s Meeting. This is an informal meeting without the Rules of Debate applying. It is intended to be a sharing of information by the SMC and Branches. Any formal decisions are taken to the General Meeting. Each Branch is entitled to two delegates and the SMC does not have voting rights.

The issues discussed were:• An update on the work being done at Wacol with survey on property; provision of fencing of three sides

– the fourth side will be completed by Metroplex in conjunction with their work. The solar panels have been installed on top of Everyman Hut. Insurance covered all items stolen from container.

• The Strategic Plan has been submitted to Brisbane City Council as part of the application for a lease of the Precinct. A ten year lease is being sought.

• The Exit Strategy for the Association was discussed and it was suggested that a committee of five be formed to discuss alternatives so the matter can be discussed at the October Conference. Is a Trust the way to go?

• Comments on National Service Day celebrated by six Branches and the SMC. The Wacol event was attended by over two hundred people.

• Also noted that three Branches have a Park dedicated to National Servicemen’s Association - Townsville at Rowes Bay, Caboolture at Wamuran and South Burnett at Nanango.

• A Memorial Plaque at Wacol to commemorate those Nashos who died before completing their obligation.• Thank to Rob Collins (Bne Nth) for donation of complete set of Nasho News including the elusive

Issue 8.• Electronic Banking. At the Redcliffe 2016 Conference an amendment was made to the constitution to

allow Branches and SMC to use electronic banking.

The second meeting was the General Meeting that all Full Members and Associates are eligible to attend. 36 members including members of the SMC attended the meeting. This meeting is formal and subject to Rules of Debate. Items discussed were:• Notice of Motion as notified in the February issue of Nasho News to contribute to delegates cost of

attending State Meetings. The motion was defeated. The offer of $200 towards cost of delegates from Branches with low funds still applies.

• The Treasurer, whilst stating that the Association is in good financial position, commented that we still had to be careful with our spending and that grants will be sought where necessary.

• The grant from the ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee Queensland had dropped from $47,000 to $3,800 as the State could not make application to include Branches.

• The National President spoke of future of Association and how we had to prepare Exit Strategy. He also spoke about the National Service Scholarship Foundation and asked branches to consider putting surplus funds into the Foundation.

• $1,900 had been donated for repairs of Pianola in the Everyman Hut.

The third meeting, the Annual General Meeting, was held on Sunday 25th, prior to the Church Service. All Eligible Members are invited to attend. The formal items were:• President’s Report – the report is included as his report in this edition.• Treasurer’s and Auditor’s Report. A copy of the Audited Financial Statements has been sent to Branch

Secretaries.• Election of Office Bearers – see inside front cover. There was no new blood.• Angela Owen was appointed Patron and Tom Andrews OAM appointed State Padre.

Copies of the Minutes of the three meetings have been sent to Branch Secretaries.

THE PADRE’S CORNER.

G’DAY EVERYONE. Greetings to you all. Something to set you thinking. It did for me.

“THE BLACK DOT”.One day the teacher entered the classroom and asked the students to prepare for a surprise test. They all waited anxiously at their desks for the exam to begin. The teacher handed out the exam papers with the text facing down as usual. Once he handed them all out, he asked the students to turn over their paper. To everyone’s surprise there were no questions ----- only a black dot ( . ) in the centre of the sheet of white paper. The teacher, seeing the expression on all of the children’s faces, he told them

the following, “I want you to write about what you see there.” The students, being very confused, got started on the inexplicable task set for them.At the end of the examination, the teacher collected all of the exam papers, and started reading each one out loud, in front of all the students.Everyone of them, without exception, defined the black dot ( . ), trying to explain things about a black dot, how it was positioned in the centre of the sheet of white paper how it looked, why it was there and many other points about a black dot on their paper. After the teacher had read aloud all of the papers, the classroom was silent and the teacher started to explain.“I am not going to grade you on this work, because I just wanted to give to you something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the sheet of paper. Everyone focused on the black dot ------- and the same happens in our lives. We have a white piece of paper, as our lives, to observe and enjoy, but we always focus on the dark spots in our lives. Our life is a gift given to us by God, with love and care, and we always have reasons to celebrate, e.g. nature renewing itself every day, our friends around us, the job that provides our livelihood, the miracles we see everyday etc..However, we insist on focusing only on the back spot, e.g. the health issues that bother us, the lack of money, the complicated relationship with a family member, the job that cannot be obtained, the disappointment with a friend etc. The black spots are small when compared with everything else in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our mind.Take your eyes away from the black dots in your life. Enjoy each one of your blessings, each moment, that life gives you. Be happy and live a life filled with love and compassion”.The chorus of my favourite Hymn says:-

“ Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of his glory and grace.”

DEMENTIAUnfortunately, at our age, more and more of our members and their partners are falling foul of this afflic-tion. Whilst there may not be a cure for this condition, by early intervention, it MAY be slowed. It is es-sential that, as early as possible, the person be referred by their doctor to an Older Person Mental Health Service (or similar State service) for assessment. It is also important that person’s actions are recorded as this will assist in the assessment.

BAYSIDE BRANCH: (Meets 1st Tuesday of the month at 10.30 at Wynnum RSL Tingal Rd Wynnum). Our Annual General Meeting was held in February and all major positions were filled with little change. Trevor Jones, our Treasurer sadly passed away in January and we will miss his expertise with our finances, his loyalty to our branch and his meticulous planning of our trips. But mostly we will just miss him. A bus load of members and supporters attended the National Servicemen’s Day at Wacol. This day was a credit to the organisers, the huge crowd (including us) had a great day and the Everyman’s Hut coped with the crowd even though it was splitting at the seams on what was I think the hottest day of the season. Our representatives were there at Wacol for the Delegates Meeting, General Meeting and Annual General Meeting on 24th / 25th March while some of our members presided over the BBQ for lunch with their tongs and smiles on their faces. We are currently in the middle of badge selling and we are very fortunate this year as a local car dealership, Bartons of Wynnum have come on board to sponsor us at Wynnum Plaza. We have a prime location in the Plaza, paid for by Bartons who have placed one of their cars, in Nasho colours and with the Nasho logo behind our selling table. We are enjoying an increase in sales. Our first Bunnings sausage sizzle was at a different Bunnings location and while not quite as profitable, was a hard but interesting day. At Bayside we are continuing to have a good time, enjoying each other’s company and are looking forward to the rest of the year. Branch contact: Secretary Pat Dunne. PH: 07 3396 8723 BEAUDESERT: (Meetings 1st Monday of even months 1030hrs. Venue: Beaudesert RSL Function Room)Our AGM was held on 5th February, over 40 attended and all enjoyed lunch together following the meetings. There were no changes to our Management Committee. We continue to have morning tea in the park with other members following our committee meetings on the odd months. Twelve of our members attended the National Service Day

commemoration and luncheon at Wacol on 14th February. We had a combined bus outing with the Beenleigh-Logan branch on the 20th March when we had a guided tour of the new freight transfer terminal at Bromelton where they run freight train services between Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and now Bromelton as their main Brisbane terminal. The photo shows the group on this outing. We then enjoying lunch together at the Yumanto Tavern on the southern outskirts of Ipswich. At our April general meeting our guest speaker demonstrated telephones that are available for hearing impaired people. On Sunday 20th May there will be a BBQ at “Widgee” where we will host members from the Beenleigh-Logan and State

branches. Our Conference Committee has been busy planning for the State Nasho Conference to be held in Beaudesert from 11th – 14th October 2018 so that we can provide an enjoyable time for our visitors. The closing date for registration to attend our Conference is 30th August 2018. Further details can be found inside the back page of this edition. Branch Contact: Brian Buck, Secretary. Venue: Beenleigh RSL)We are only on our second meeting of the year thanks to the seasonal holiday break. We have joined with our comrades from the Beaudesert branch on the 20th March 2018 for a very informative day and great mateship. The day started with Beenleigh/Logan members carpooling to Beaudesert for an impressive morning tea, followed by a bus trip to the new private enterprise at Bromelton a few kilometres west of Beaudesert.

This business is Specialised Container Transport. Unbelievably, it is owned by one person. This container – rail facility is a $22 million complex on a huge piece of ground employing mostly local people and a special arrangement with the local indigenous community for employment opportunities! The tour of the facility was a real eye opener. The locomotives and rolling stock are owned by the business along with other facilities throughout Australia. After the SCT facility it was back on the bus for a trip to Yamanto (Ipswich) out in the direction of the Amberley RAAF Base for lunch at the individual’s expense. All were catered for very well by the Tavern! 1330 hrs back on the bus to Beaudesert so the bus was available for a school run. Everyone enjoyed the outing and our friends at Beaudesert looked after their guests extremely well! The only other thing the branch has had of importance is the AGM; all positions were vacated and we have had a change of President and Membership officer. All other positions were the same members nominating and being re-elected. Sadly we have lost two from our fold, who have gone to a greater place off this earth! Branch Contact: Secretary. President Roy and his wife Rose and John and Jeanette Price travelled to Wacol to attend the 2018 National Servicemen’s Remembrance Day Function. Congratulations to all on an excellent event. Bribie Island Branch meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the home of our Vice-President, Betty Schilling. Members and Supporters enjoy an excellent lunch and our meetings are held every second Month. Regular guest speakers attend and future day trips are being planned. The Bribie Island Branch Members and Supporters hosted an Information Booth at the Bribie Island Mall on 9th and 10th April with a view to promoting the Association and possibly attracting new members. We were very pleased with the results and several new Members expressed an interest in joining. We will continue to recruit. President Roy was invited to attend an Anzac Day Service at the Banksia Beach Primary School on 24th April. He make a donation of a book on behalf of the Bribie Island National Servicemen’s Association. Our Members and Supporters will proudly march behind our banner at the Anzac Day March on April 25th, 2018. BRISBANE NORTH WEST: (Meeting: 3rd Sunday each month (other than December) 1015 hours. Venue: Gaythorne RSL and a number remain for lunch at the bistro bar).Anzac Day fundraising was conducted at Everton Park at Coles and Woolworths. Our members who volunteered their time were well received by patrons, some of whom were looking for new badges to add to their collections; which we were able to oblige them with. Along with good sales there were those who stopped for a chat; as well as a free slice of cake provided by a local eatery. Another freebie was a blessing and a hug from a passing Buddhist who assured me that my late father was present and very pleased with the good work his son and daughter-in-law were doing! Coming to a monthly meeting and staying for lunch is something to look forward to. Branch Contact Vice President Dave Livett. Ph 07 3366 3191.

BRISBANE SOUTH: (Meeting: Last Sunday each month 0930 hours. Venue: Sunnybank Bowls Club). The first function for this year for us was the National Servicemen’s Day celebration at the Wacol Precinct on 14th February. We were honoured to have the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency The Honourable Paul de Jersey AC and Mrs Kaye de Jersey, State Patron, Councillor Angela Owen and representatives from the Army, Navy, Airforce, DVA and RSL as special guests. Our members joined the large crowd of NSAA members and their partners and enjoyed a beautiful lunch in the Everyman’s Hut at the end of the service. Members enjoyed a bus trip to the Gold Coast in March to have a tour through the Commonwealth Games venues. Lunch at Broadbeach Bowls Club, the Bowls venue for the Games, was enjoyed by all. Members were given an insight into how much work goes into a Games venue, both from the organizational side as well as the security side. Our teams are now ready for ANZAC Day memorabilia sales before focusing on the 25th April, honouring all those who have served and especially those who gave their lives in all conflicts. Branch Secretary Len Ramsay and his wife will be present for the ceremonies relating to the Centenary of the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux which took place in France from 24 to 25 April 1918. Further info - Branch Contact: Len Ramsay, 07 3209 5541. BUNDABERG: (Meeting: 2nd Saturday of the month 1330 hrs. Venue: Bundaberg RSL Board Room)Our meeting numbers have fallen to a lower but static number now as we progress through 2018. I can advise that we have had a new member transfer in and the paperwork will be forwarded accordingly. Our subsidised monthly luncheons are proving rather successful and this activity will continue. Social Secretary Brian Trost has had his thinking cap on for many years now and we have just had a coach trip to the almost abandoned gold mining town of Cracow which is situated about 100k’s west from Eidsvold in the North Burnett area of the state. The mining of gold was re-activated by Newcrest Mining back in 2004, but has now sold to Evolution Mining who under take the mining now on a 12 hour two shift daily roster of 200 men per shift. A very substantial amount of gold is being found to this day, from deep underground. Many of our coach full of passengers had never been to Cracow before, neither had our coach driver! There are only 33 people residing in the town and the miners have their own camp a short distance outside of the town area where everything they need is provided. The hotel is the only operating business! The AGM did not bring any new nominees out of the woodwork, so the branch is still in the same hands. Our next coach trip will be a ferry ride around the Port of Gladstone. We have had a number of trips to the port and now that all construction should be finished, we are going again. Branch members participated in ANZAC Day parades in the area and the photo shows from the left Paddy Peckover, Past President, Brian Trost, Secretary and Mick Harvey Branch President taken at the RSL lunch following the march. Branch contact Secretary Brian Trost 07 4151 3485. CABOOLTURE and DISTRICT: (Meeting 2nd. Monday each month 1000 hrs for 1030 hrs start. Venue Caboolture RSL Club, Hasking Street). It’s been a fairly busy start to the year for the branch. The local Federal member, Ms Susan Lamb M.P., invited the branch to submit a proposal for a community event celebrating the Centenary of Armistice. An application was subsequently lodged; it has been accepted by the Community Consultative Committee and forwarded to D.V.A. for approval. A Shuttle Bus service would be provided ex-Caboolture C.B.D. to the venue (Caboolture Lakes) where the local RSL Sub-branch Caboolture Remembers spectacular would follow the Remembrance Day 2018 service

at the War Memorial. The triangular bus route will also service the static/aerial displays planned that day by the Warplane Museum at Caboolture Airport. A 15-strong group attended the National Service Day pomp and circumstance ceremony at Wacol on February 14. The branch is looking into a trip in May to the Army Museum at Victoria Barracks as its first real social outing for the year. The museum is now showcasing its new Animals in War exhibit. At the branch’s AGM in March, our President Graeme Marlow declined to seek re-election, instead nominating his deputy Col Rolph to take the helm. Several branch stalwarts were unable to attend; they were returning that day from the Allied Forces & Nasho Reunion at Moree organised by the N.W. Sub-branch of the NSW N.S. Association. Earlier, the Branch

executive had offered to subsidise the trip for attendees, and a party of five (Hec and Moya Handsley, Gordon and Carmel Tunstall and Vince Koch) travelled down in two cars, both of which unfortunately fell victim to costly mechanical mishaps. The trip correspondent, Hec Handsley, presented a detailed overview at our April meeting with State President Alex Garlin and Administration Manager Tony Stevenson also in attendance.

The group was well looked after in Moree, and enjoyed the experience. While they were not greatly impressed with the Meet and Greet function, they all enjoyed the Dinner and Concert the following evening where Little Pattie was the star attraction. She didn’t disappoint! A spy tells me that Vince Koch was so smitten that he wanted to bring her home. A photograph of the happy group that night accompanies this article. Our Anzac Day badge/memorabilia selling campaign was conducted only at a single venue. Old Father Time is catching up with us. Our usual Anzac Day service was held at the Wamuran N.S. Memorial Park. Branch Contact: Secretary Alex Nunn 07 5499 2810CAIRNS and DISTRICT: (Meetings 2nd Thursday each month at 10:30am Venue: Upstairs at the Cairns RSL boardroom.)Two prominent and well respected Cairns citizens and longtime branch members passed away in March: Barry Cranwell, aged 84 years, former Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer of the 51st Battalion the Royal Queensland Regiment 12th December to 1st February 1971 and Leslie Clarkson, aged 82 years, on the 12th March. Leslie (Les) was one of our foundation members. At the March meeting Pat Galwey was awarded a Meritorious Service Award. Pat has served our branch with distinction, having chalked up five (5) years as a committee member and eight (8) as a vice-president. Congratulations Pat. While on the “greats” list, congratulations to the Innisfail/Tully/Babinda branch on winning the Dennis Connon Award for achieving the largest percentage membership increase for 2017. DECEPTION BAY, PENINSULA and DISTRICTS: (Meeting: 1st Thursday, Bi Monthly odd months at 10 am QLD Time. Venue: Meet at the John Naumann Hall Deception Bay Rd Deception Bay starting at 9.30 am followed by morning tea).Just a brief update of the past few months the Branch members and supporters celebrated the festive season with lunch after our December meeting with a visit from Santa who delivered presents and had a photo taken with his Grandfather’s mates from the Redcliffe Branch that have known him since he was a baby and now is Branch supporter. We have had two guest speakers so far this year, one from Angel Flight and the other from the Heart Foundation both extremely informative and we all gained some great tips on Heart health. The Secretary organized a bus trip to Caloundra RSL to see the Two Tenors with morning tea and lunch included made a great day along with guests from the Palm Lake Resort at Deception Bay. A huge thank you to our regulars, Denly, Charlene,

Selina, Father Phil and Helen, Nev, Margaret, Malcolm, Yvonne and John who along with Phil and myself who help out at our Fundraising site at Bunnings Rothwell during our Anzac Day. They also help again at Remembrance Day sales period. We are very fortunate that we have Selena and Vickie from Bunnings as our main Branch Supporters since we started in 2013. Also thanks to President Denly representing the Branch at the Deception Bay Dawn Service and Vice President Henry Crew at the main service at Redcliffe both laying a wreath on behalf of the Branch. Our May meeting will include a guest speaker who not only is a Nasho but

ex Prison Guard. Stephen Gage will be talking about the Evolution of the Boggo Rd Goal. July and August will be taken up with a Guest Speaker and Poet Mick Martin. Another bus trip is planned this time to the Southport RSL. Moving a bit forward 6th September will see our 5th Anniversary Brunch, and special guests are all welcome to attend with raffles and entertainment. Please contact the Secretary if attending for catering purposes. Branch Contact: Secretary: Heather Donoghue Ph 0415 194 776.GLADSTONE: (Meeting: 3rd Wednesday each month. 1300hrs: Venue: Rocky Glen Hotel)National Service Day 2018 was celebrated in combination with a church service at the Anglican Church on Sunday 11th February, where President Noel Bowley read a brief resume of the National Servicemen’s Association to the congregation. Members and supporters joined with the congregation for coffee and cake at the conclusion of the service. A poor attendance of members at the A.G.M. held on 28th February, and failure to form a quorum for the meeting resulted in postponement of the A.G.M.to 21st March. Failure to fill all positions e.g.: Secretary and Treasurer at the meeting held in March was very disappointing. Our next meeting will be held on 20th June when we hope to be able to fill these positions. Nashos formed part of the huge crowds attending Anzac Day services through the Gladstone region, where attendance, especially for the Dawn Service, increases each year. As we have done for many years now, Gladstone and Rockhampton Nashos joined with the small community of Marmor in their very meaningful tribute to the Anzac spirit.

Brian Handke was re-elected unopposed as Branch President and the vacant position of Vice-President ably filled by Barrie Smith. Our special thanks and gratitude goes to retiring committee officers John Smyth, membership, and Doug Keppie, Welfare, for their valued efforts over many years. We were again most pleased to welcome State President Alex Garlin together with State Admin Manager Tony Stevenson who enlightened us somewhat regarding communication with the DVA. Following the meeting, members attended the nearby Light Horse Museum for the unveiling and dedication ceremony of the plaque to commemorate the National Servicemen called up between 1951 and 1972 with the loss of 212 young servicemen. The dedication service was carried out by our Padre, Reverend John Mavor AM and addressed by Gold Coast Councillor Glen Tozer. Wreaths were laid by State President Alex Garlin, Branch President Brian Handke and Councillor Glen Tozer. After the ceremony we all enjoyed a barbeque lunch with special thanks again to our Spoons. We had a lovely collection of new ANZAC badges to sell this year including the military animals playing a big part with a nice purple colour that was received really well by all. Thanks to all volunteers for their time in helping to support our veterans and also to other helpers who came on board from the RSL and War Widows just to help us out including Brian, Les, Milan and Elli and to all our own volunteers. Let’s hope we can all be available next year to help again when Anzac comes around. We hope everyone had a successful Anzac march. Our next General Meeting Day will be Friday May 25, 2018. We are all looking forward to the day 8th May. It has been great to establish contact with their branch and perhaps contact with other branches can be looked into in the future. A big contingent marched on the 25th April and they all enjoyed the experience as they usually do. Our meetings are very informal but they mean we keep in touch and know how we are all going as age and sickness seem to be a problem for many. If there are any Nashos who haven’t come along to join us please give me a ring or email as you will be most welcome. Gympie Branch sends Hellos to all other Branches and wish them good health and fellowship. Venue: Hervey Bay RSL).We here at Hervey Bay have had a very busy time since the last edition of Nasho News. We held our AGM in February with the only person to remain in their old position was the President. The other committee members have shuffled their positions around. The Branch did thank members of the previous committee who were not re-elected for the time that they put into the Branch. Straight away the new committee were put to work. We ran two ‘in-house” raffles at the RSL and a sausage sizzle in March. One “in-house” raffle was held before Good Friday and then on Easter Sunday fronted up for a sausage sizzle from 6:30am till 3:30pm. The end result is what counted. Our Social Club met on March 22nd and again on April 9th and a free BBQ was arranged for all members was arranged April 22nd was a huge success. A special thanks to all of the Social Club for putting on a wonderful spread. The Social Club has already started planning the next outing and the rumour is that it will be a bus trip. We had 2 members and 2 supporter members attend the March meetings at the Wacol Heritage Precinct and a report was delivered to our members at our March 28th General Meeting. We wish to welcome all new members and supporter who have joined our Branch since the February edition of the Nasho News. The awarding of the Barry Vicary Memorial Shield to the Hervey Bay Branch at Wacol for highest numerical increase in membership for 2017 is evidence of Branch growth. Fundraising continued leading up to ANZAC Day with the selling of merchandise at Bunnings from April 19th to April 24th.

It comprised a short march to the monument in Anzac Park with a guard of honour of No 107 Squadron AAFC, Innisfail and was accompanied by music from the Town Band. This branch is one of the few branches to hold a march to celebrate Nasho Day. The local newspaper ran good photos and article. Dinner at RSL followed the commemoration. A very successful outing to the Australian Armoury & Artillery Museum in Cairns on 12 March was attended by 24 members and supporters.

Members gained an insight into the huge variety of tanks and other hardware of war from countries all over the world. This museum has a huge serious collection, very well displayed and explained. The nearby Red Beret Hotel, Redlynch proved to be a suitable venue for lunch. The photo shows the photo taken by Maria Girgenti shows the group that attended. Major John Lowe (Ret’d) was appointed Patron at the recent AGM and he spoke of his desire to carry on the excellent

example of the two previous patrons, Eddie O’Farrell OAM and Ted Bosworth MM, both deceased. On information recently received, the grave of 1/704382 Willian Henry McDonnell, aged 18 was located at the Innisfail cemetery. Bill died of septicaemia during his training as part of the 3rd Intake 1952 at Wacol. He was buried on 21st September 1952 after a funeral service at St. Alban’s Anglican Church at Innisfail. His mother Violet McDonnell is buried directly behind Bill’s grave. On page 5 there is a proposal to dedicate a plaque to those Nashos who died during their initial training or within first two years of CMF. The dedication will be made at the 2019 National Service Day Service at Wacol. Bill McDonnell will be eligible to have his name listed on this plaque. Venue: Gallipoli Room, Redlands RSL.)The 2018 Committee for the Redlands Branch elected at the AGM are Eric Shaw, President; Graham Hinson, Vice President; Ken Cullum, Secretary; Barry White, Treasurer; Les Warner, Membership Officer; Ian Gray, Merchandising Officer; Bruce Reedman, Welfare Officer; Phil Whitlock, Social Organiser; Fred Petersen, Newsletter Editor; Ced Murray, Evan Edwards and Frank Williams, Committee Members. Ced Murray, our long serving and well respected Treasurer has retired from that position due to his health, but will continue on as a Committee Member. His successor, Barry White, has previously served as Treasurer and our Branch is very lucky to have such an able replacement. This is a very busy time for our members, many of whom are working on fund raising activities as well as assisting with the ANZAC Day Commemorations. In fact it has been an incredibly busy and very enjoyable month for our branch. Our last meeting was well attended in spite of being held on Easter Sunday. During the month we also enjoyed a day out and visit to a Telecommunications Museum. Largely because

of the clever and thoughtful presentation and the enthusiasm of the volunteers, this was an enjoyable and interesting visit; this in spite of the fact that there were many of us who could remember using some of the museum artefacts being presented. We then proceeded to have an excellent lunch at the well-known Breakfast Creek hotel. Good food, good company how could it not be a success. Social Organiser Phil is working hard organizing our projected trip to Stanthorpe. It’s all a lot of hard work but I’m sure those who are going will enjoy another successful event. Venue: Maroochydore RSL) Our AGM in March saw Ted Weidner take over as President of our branch and Jock Graham as Vice-president. The year goes on. We had a great day out at the Outback Spectacular (photo) in February, a picnic at Mudjimba in April with our next one on Monday 11th June at Woombye Park and Light Horse Museum. We would love to be more adventurous but age is catching up with most of us. We continue to look after other and help where we can. Our Anzac Day badge selling was smaller than some years but it’s nice to see young people interested and grateful for the sacrifices made for them. At our last meeting held on Tuesday 8th May we had the Gympie Branch join us for a talk from the State Office about the eligibility for the White Card.
