When NASHS opened in 1982 wehad a Library Officer named RuthSell working here. Ruth was awonderful person who alwaysshowed concern for everyonearound her. Unfortunately, Ruthlost her battle with cancer someyears ago.

As a very active member of manyvolunteer organisations, Ruth wasa fantastic example of the schoolmotto- care and diligence. She

was highly respected in thebroader community for her tirelessefforts in organising manyfundraising events in town.

In memory of Ruth, an award wasestablished by the Library staff. The award is called the Ruth SellSchool and Community Service

Award and is presented to astudent who is involved in bothschool and community activities

and cares about others, as Ruth did. It comprises a perpetual trophy

which is kept in the Library with the students name engraved on a plaqueand a certificate for their portfolio.

Past recipients have included Darrian Graham, Asha Healy & DominicBrain.

Congratulations to Stephanie Russ (Year 10) on receiving the 2014 RuthSell School and Community Service Award.

Amongst her many activities reflecting Care and Diligence, Stephanie isa School Councillor and has represented the school at official events. She has mentored new students of our school community and has helpedorganise and participated in fund raising events. In the near future,

Stephanie will be playing music at our Year 12 Presentation Evening.

Congratulations to Stephanie. She is a very worthy recipient of the 2014Ruth Sell School and Community Service Award.

Term 4 is always a very busy term. For our widerschool community it is characterised by farewells andwelcomes; for staff it is about reflecting on theirteaching and learning programs and planning for nextyear; and for students the focus is on our school valueof Be your Best which will help them achieve goodgrades as they work right up to the end of the school

    year.

Planning for the future is ongoing at NASHS. Inparticular we are very keen to seek your feedbackabout how you believe we are tracking, along with anysuggested areas for improvement. For this to occur, parents will have the opportunity to complete an online survey. Further details enclosed.

We have been lucky to have had two schooldevelopment days this term (Monday, 13 October andFriday, 7 November). NASHS staff have used thetime well by reviewing our school performance andusing the information to identify areas where we canimprove to ensure we provide the very bestopportunities for our students. Our focus in the earlypart of this term was on our Year 9 NAPLAN results. Iam pleased to advise that in the NAPLAN many of ourstudents did well. There continues to be improvementin all areas (Reading, Numeracy, Spelling andGrammar) with the most significant improvement thisyear being in Writing. Students who do well inNAPLAN will not have to sit the OLNA testing (on lineliteracy and numeracy) in Year 10.

We recently farewelled our Year 12 students. AtNASHS we have established a number of traditions toensure that we appropriately acknowledge our Year12 students and their contribution to the school. OnMonday, 22 October we held the Year 12 formaldinner which was attended by both staff and students. It was a most enjoyable evening. Then on Friday, 26October the whole school celebrated the final day ofschool for the Year 12s at the farewell assembly. This assembly is always one to look forward to as the

PRINCIPALS COMMENT school salutes the Year 12s. It is a light hearted andjoyous occasion. On Friday, 21 November we willhold our formal Year 12 Presentation Evening duringwhich subject and special awards will be announcedalong with student scholarships.

As we farewell the Year 12s we are also welcomingthe 2015 Year 7 and Year 8 students to NASHS.

With the arrival of two cohorts of students we areexpecting our overall student numbers to increase byabout 200 for 2015. Over the last 18 months webelieve our village building transition program hasassisted primary school students, parents and staff aswell as NASHS staff and students get ready for thisbig change. The final step in our transition programwill be the orientation days Friday 5 December forthe 2015 Year 8 students and Monday 8 December forthe 2015 Year 7 students. If parents have any queriesabout our transition program please contact eitherKylie Rennie (Transition Coordinator) or Peter Gray(Deputy Principal).

Last week we said farewell to our computer networktechnical officer, Gayathri Surath. Gayathri joined ourstaff in 2011 and during that time her expertknowledge, high level of skill and ability to quicklyproblem solve has meant that our students and staffhave had access to excellent computer facilities. Abig thankyou to Gayathri!...and we wish her all thevery best in her move to Melbourne.

ANZAC is the subject thathas been talked about forweeks. I dont know aboutyou but I was very impressedwith the mess hall,

ceremonies, parade, concert,re-enactment, multiple food tents and many otherevents over the ANZAC weekend. Although therewere thousands of people the crowds were welldispersed, with numerous screens scattered aroundthe city so no one would miss out on watching whatwas happening or being presented. The weather, well, who could have asked for better with beautifulsunny blue skies. Who would have thought thatAlbany would be able to pull something off so well?

My question is this: Was only one person responsiblefor making this ANZAC event so successful and run

so smoothly? No of course not, one person could notdo it all. A whole team of people all working togetherwas needed for such a great outcome along withyears of discussion and planning to make theweekend so successful.

This reminds me of students here at school.Teachers have a team approach to teaching and worktogether to help students reach their potential overmany years, starting from Kindergarten right up to theend of High school. The teachers I see here atNASHS go out of their way to help students with theirlearning, taking care of individual needs, and have a

genuine care and desire for students to succeed.

The Student Services team also form a vital part ofthis care here at school, and work together with theteaching staff to ensure support is given to students inall areas, not only in academic issues. Please domake use of us if we can be of assistance or supportat all.(Ben Wyatt and Jennie SmallSchool Chaplains)

    ACT BELONG COMMITVOLUNTEER!

Volunteer for health andhappiness:Do you enjoy being aroundpeople? Do you gainsatisfaction from helping others

or learning new skills? If youanswered yes to any of thesequestions, volunteering may befor you!

Volunteers do things that make a difference to thelives of otherswhether its helping disadvantagedkids, assisting the elderly, lending a hand in schoolcanteens, weeding nature strips, helping injuredwildlife or coaching junior sport. It is no wondervolunteers feel good about themselves and are proudof what they do.

In 2010, 6.1 million Australians participated in somesort of voluntary workthats 36% of the population! So go on, make today the day you join in andvolunteer too!

Why volunteer and how does it contribute towellbeing?Everyone has different motivations to volunteer. Somepeople get a buzz out of knowing that they have madea difference to peoples lives. For others, volunteeringgives them a chance to step outside their comfort zoneand challenge themselves. Others are passionateabout a cause and want to contribute to making a

    positive change in the community.

Volunteering provides the opportunity to feel part ofthe community and meet like-minded people with

    REGULAR ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT!

My message to all parents and students is don'tunderestimate the importance of regular attendance. There is clear evidence that those students whoattend school regularly achieve better results in theirsubjects, find work easier and perform better inclassroom tests, exams and formalised testing such

as NAPLAN. NASHS strongly urges parents tominimise the disruption to their child's education bymaking medical appointments, shopping excursionsetc out of school hours where possible. A reminderalso that for all planned absences the school needs tobe informed prior to the absences, two weeks forvacations and one week for appointments.

End of Year Beach Day and Reward Activities:Planning is now under way for the last two days of theyear (17th & 18th December) and students will soonbe able to pick up permission forms for parents tosign. Students are now fully aware that to participate

in these two days of activities they must have GoodStanding. This means that a student must have anattendance of 90% or better, wear school uniform andnot received detentions or suspensions for behaviourmisdemeanours.

similar interest and goals. This gives us a sense ofbelonging which helps us keep mentally healthy. Most volunteers will tell you that not only is it great toknow they are helping those in need, but there is atremendous sense of personal satisfaction andachievement from volunteering.

Whatever the reasons, it is clear that engaging involunteer work improves our self esteem, ourconfidence, provides us with a sense of achievementand greater control over our lives. All these thingscontribute to good mental health.

    YEAR TEN UPDATE

Well Year 10s, only seven weeks to go and your timein lower school is finished. For most of you 2015heralds the change to Senior School and continuingyour studies in an ATAR, General or Vocationalcourse. Some students have decided to either studyat TAFE or seek combined employment and training. All of you are preparing for your future and it is up toyou to be your best and do your best so that you canhave better and more choices for your future.

These final weeks of Year 10 will be important for yourfuture so make sure assessments are in on time andthat you study for those upcoming tests. Help yourmates when you can as teamwork is important.

    YEAR ELEVEN UPDATE

    YEAR EIGHT UPDATE

As part of the ANZAC Commemorative CelebrationsNASHS Year 8 students had a unique opportunity toattend a concert presented by the Royal AustralianNavy. After listening to the dulcet tones of the NavyConcert Band we were treated to the Navy Rockband. They belted out the songs from Frozen, Katy

Perry, and the Happy Song by Ferell Willams.Following the concert students were able to viewdisplays in the foyer about careers in the military andtalk with military personnel.

Two of our Year 8 students were part of theCommemorative Troop March over the ANZACweekend representing their cadet units. Jack Boycewas part of the Air-force cadets and Paris Dicks as aNavy cadet. Paris had the amazing opportunity to bepart of the symbolic Departure of Naval Ships andstood-to as the ship she was on, HMS Stuart sailed information around King George Sound. It is great to

see Year 8 students making the most of opportunitiesand following one of our school values Be Your Best.Congratulations to these two students.

The Physical Education staff have been veryimpressed by the effort and competitiveness displayedby students during Athletics classes. We have hadsome impressive results for events so far and arelooking forward to the Athletics carnival on Thursday.Callan Mortimer and Jake Castlehow are vying for theschools 100m record. Aleesha Narkle and StaceySmith are leading many events. Some standoutperformances are Dylan Kennedy in the high jump

with a jump of 1.55m, Josh Scoble with a shotput of11.37m, Mikael Philipps 2.48min in 800m and SteveMarshall with 9.36 for triple jump. Lets see if we canbreak some NASHS records.

There has been much talk about Good Standing atNASHS. Remember to make sure your attendance isbetter than 85%, wear your uniform, behave in classand you will be invited to the Reward activities at theend of the term.

Only five weeks to go. Enjoy your last remaining

weeks of being a Year 8! Keep completing homework

and put in some extra study for your end of term tests.(Susie WoodYear 8 Coordinator)

At this time of the year there can be the tendency tothink Its nearly the end of the year I can stopapplying myself to my work. But this is far from thetruth. Students need to continually apply themselvesby working hard to ensure all work is completed, studyand homework is completed and tests are thoroughlyprepared for.

It is hard to believe that this group are nearly the bigkids in the school, the Year 12s. It only seems likeyesterday that they were joining NASHS for the firsttime as nervous and shy Year 8s. The Year 11 dinnerwas held recently and it was there that I realized that

these glamorous and handsome young adults in frontof me had all matured and grown up (some are stillgrowing which is a bit scary). It was a great night atMotel Le Grande and from everyones faces and thephotos it is obvious fun was had by all.

To those students leaving us for employment I wishyou good luck and thank you for being part of ourcohort and to all I wish a relaxing and safe holiday andlook forward to seeing you next year for the start ofYear 12.(Andrew HarrisonYear 11 Coordinator)

Remember to be good role models to students in thelower school and help them when you can by beingsomeone they can look up to. Continue to work hardand enjoy the remainder of this term.(Lyn PetersYear 10 Co-ordinator)

Hello again! After an amazing yearaway on maternity leave, I returned toNASHS at the start of Term 4. I lovebeing a mum, and cant believe howmuch I have learnt. I return with a

new found perspective and appreciation for all theparents out there. Give yourselves a big pat on theback raising children is challenging and you are alldoing a mighty job!!

The journey into parenthood started with manyphysical body changes for me, and I feel like I haveaged 10 years! It gave me a chance to reflect onbody image, and how teens deal with pressure, relating to body image.

There is an enormous lack of knowledge in Australiasurrounding negative body image and eating

disorders. The reality is that they are extremelycommon, affecting an increasing number of peopleeach year. In fact, almost 1 in 20 Australians arethought to have an eating disorder. They are not alifestyle choice, they are not about food and youcannot tell just by looking at someone if they aresuffering. (The Butterfly Foundation)

I encourage parents and students to take the ButterflyFoundations pledge to celebrate body imageawareness week (and our bodies!)

My body shape does not define my worth.

Healthy bodies come in a diverse range of sizeand shape. My body shape does not dictate my physical

capability or my mental health status. My physical health and what my body can do, not

its shape or size, is my priority. My feelings and attitudes about my body can

change, which I will embrace but will not act onnegative ones.

My mental health and wellbeing require daily care.I will learn how to build mental resilience, and Iunderstand that this is a life commitment.

My love of my body is personal. I will learn how to

encourage my family and friends to love theirbodies, as I understand that I can have a positiveimpact on them.

The images of unrealistic bodies that I see allaround me, are not a guide to how I should look orfeel.

I will learn to recognise warning signs in myselfand others about physical and mental health.

I will prioritize my physical and mental health. Irecognise that both are critical to living a long andhealthy life.

Our bodies are pretty AMAZING!! An appointmentcan be made with me, Monday, Tuesday or Thursday, for more information or assistance, or you can accessthe Butterfly Foundation website.

NASHS SCHOOL NURSE NASHS is a NO SPRAY ZONE. Which means noaerosol deodorants, no perfume sprays, no fly spraysetc. Previously, aerosol deodorant have causedasthma attacks at NASHS. If we arent vigilant, it willhappen again. 1 in 10 people have asthma. Liquidcontained in aerosol sprays is emitted into the airunder high pressure, creating a fine mist which can

spread quite a long way. The chemicals and strongsmells in the mist, when inhaled, are what can triggerasthma symptoms and a possible attack. (AsthmaFoundation) PLEASE do not bring aerosol sprays intothis school, lets works together. A good roll-on,antiperspirant deodorant is a great alternative to anaerosol spray.

While on sprays. To celebrate personal hygieneday, lets educate our young people about thedifferences between antiperspirant and perfumeddeodorant options. Antiperspirant is a deodorant thatis put on the skin, especially under the arms, in order

to prevent or reduce sweating and body odour (BO).Sprays like Lynx & Impulse will not stop body odour,as they do not contain antiperspirant. If a studentdecides to use perfumed spray like Lynx and Impulse,it is recommended that an antiperspirant roll-on is alsoused. Lynx and Impulse must be applied at home, asthey are not accepted at NASHS NO SPRAYZONE.

Things are smelling SWEET at NASHS! Have a greatfinal few weeks of the term everyone.(Amelia JefferisSchool Nurse)

    WORK PLACE LEARNING 2014

Throughout 2014 many Year 11 and 12 students have had the opportunity to attend a workplace one day a week.

As part of their course, students participating in Work Place Learning (WPL) chose the industry in which they

    wanted to work.

WPL assists students to make better career choices. It also provides meaning to the learning at school.

Employers setting aside time for our students helps the loop of learning; which is the processing and assimilation

of what we hear, see or experience that alters or improves our knowledge, skills and attitudes. The combinationof knowledge, skills and attitudes is behaviour. If someone trains us, or we learn something new or different, it is

    our behaviour that is affected.

Without employers willing to assist in this process our students would miss the opportunity to enhance their

learning, employability skills and career choices.

The link between North Albany Senior High School and the community is of great importance and we would like to

extend our appreciation to the following businesses for giving our students an opportunity in the workplace:

Thank you to all the students who helped make Poppies in the Library as part of the 2014

ANZAC Commemorations. They looked absolutely fantastic!

Above is one of our new banners for the next 4 years of historical celebrations. The

other banner was part of the shop window display, in Optus shop on York Street. If you

did not manage to see it on the ANZAC 100 years weekend, the student work was amazing!

Unfortunately we have said goodbye to Gayathri

Surath (School Technician). We sincerely thank

Gayathri for her services to NASHS over the past

few years. We will miss her smile and patience in a

very demanding job. We wish her all the very best,

as she moves with her husband to Melbourne.

    HOMEWORK CLASSES will continue on

Wednesdays after school untilWEEK 8, 3 December.
