Name: ___________________ Date: ____________________ Bacon’s Rebellion: The Declaration 1676 Primary Source Analysis Background: By the late 1670s, many of the free white men in Virginia were former indentured servants (A) who, although they had completed their servitude, had little money to buy land. Because they did not own land, they could not vote and therefore enjoyed almost no rights in colonial society. These poor colonists lived mainly on the western outskirts of Virginia, where they constantly fought with Native Americans for land. (B) Governor William Berkeley feared rebellion: “six parts of Seven at least are Poore, Indebted, Discontented and Armed.” Planter Nathaniel Bacon focused inland colonists’ anger at local Indians, who they felt were holding back settlement, and at a distant government unwilling to aid them. (C)In the summer and fall of 1676, Bacon and his supporters rose up and plundered the elite’s estates and slaughtered nearby Indians. After Governor Berkeley declared Bacon’s army illegal, Bacon marched his men to Jamestown to confront the colonial leaders about a number of grievances. The march turned violent and rebels set fire to the town as Berkeley and others fled by ship. (D)However, a month after the rebellion, Bacon became ill and died. Berkeley was able to return to Jamestown and easily subdue the leaderless rebels. (E) In the following excerpts, you will read directly from Bacon’s Declaration. A. Use a dictionary or textbook to define indentured servants. B. Where did most formal indentured servants live? C. Who did Nathaniel Bacon blame for the problems facing the poor colonists living on the outskirts of Virginia? D. How did Nathaniel Bacon respond when Governor Berkeley declared his army illegal? E. What happened to Nathaniel Bacon? Nathaniel Bacon
