The National 2YO Sale, to be held at Germiston from Aug 13th to 14th, is a sale well and truly established as a value for money auction, which has its share of Gr1 winners and champions.

Take J J The Jet Plane, who cost a modest R70 000 at the 2006 National 2YO Sale, and went on to prove himself a world class sprinter. Twice Equus Champion Sprinter (2008 and 2010), J J The Jet Plane won major feature races in four different countries – Dubai, Britain, Hong Kong and South Africa. A truly exceptional sprinter, his 15 victories included the 2010 G1 Hong Kong Sprint, where he accounted for the world class sprinters Rocket Man and Sacred Kingdom.

The Apache, now standing as a stallion at the Rosed-ene Stud, was another well-bought top class athlete. The son of Mogok, bred by the Scott Bros, went for R80 000 at the 2009 National 2YO Sale, going on to prove him-self a local champion and top class international per-former.

South Africa’s Equus Champion 3YO Colt in 2011, The Apache won six times in his country of birth with his biggest wins including the G1 Champions Cup and G1 Daily News 2000. Exported to Dubai, he made his mark by winning the G2 Al Rashid-iya and finishing second in both the G1 Jebel Hatta and G1 Dubai Duty Free. The Apache was then sent to North America where he was

first past the post in one of the world’s biggest turf rac-es, the G1 Arlington Million of 2013, only to be demoted to second for interfering with the runner-up.

Another great buy was Riv-er Jetez, who cost R230 000 at the 2005 National 2YO Sale. The tough as teak mare, a full sister to legendary cham-pion Pocket Power, earned over R3.5 million in South Africa, where her 12 wins in-cluded the G1 J&B Met. Sent overseas, River Jetez landed the G2 Balanchine Stakes in Dubai and placed in three major international G1 fea-tures.

Not all the champions sold at the sale are cheapies, however. In 2010, a magnifi-cent colt by Dynasty was sold for a record breaking R1 mil-

lion. Subsequently named Jackson, the colt went on to win three Grade 1 races – Investec Cape Derby, Daily News 2000 and Champions Cup –and earned connec-tions more than R2.3 million in stakes.

Jackson is currently a very popular stallion at High-lands, and has his first foal on the ground this month.

Other major G1 winners sold at the National 2YO Sale in years gone by include the outstanding international performers Cerise Cherry, Dane Julia, Irridescence, and Lizarre.

The sale has also produced numerous local G1 winners including last season’s out-standing juvenile Arabian Beat.

Bred by the Ascot Stud, Arabian Beat, who cost just R70 000 at the 2014 2YO Sale, won three of five out-ings, including the G1 SA Nursery, and looks an excit-ing prospect for the season ahead.

This year’s 346 strong cat-alogue also includes a smat-tering of fillies and mares sold in training.

All South Africa’s elite stal-lions have juveniles on offer at the 2YO Sale.

Captain Al has three, Dy-nasty eight, Kahal six, Silvano four, Trippi three, and Var five.

Intriguingly, there is also one

Gr1 Durban July winner Bold Silvano, a son of Silvano, has 12 lots on offer. His draft includes a colt from the family of this season’s multiple feature race winner Cat And The Moon (lot 51), a colt from the family of 2015 Gr1 SA Nurs-ery winner Arabian Beat (lot 123), a filly whose third dam is legendary racemare and broodmare Dahlia (lot 173), and a filly out of Sportsworld’s stakes winning daughter Recondite, from the Soho Secret family (lot 200). Former Gr2 Dingaans winner Curved Ball is the only son of leading Australian sire Fastnet Rock at stud in South Africa. Fastnet Rock, crowned Australia’s Champion Sire for a sec-ond time in 2014-2015, is the sire of 2015 Investec Oaks winner Qualify and Gr1 winner Diamondsandrubies. Dynastic Rule, the first son of the Dynasty to have runners on the track, was lightly raced but won well over 1700m. Gitano Hernando ranks as one of the best performed racers to have retired to stud in South Africa. The son of Hernando earned more than $2 million on the track, with his wins including he Gr1 Goodwood Stakes and Gr1 Singapore Airlines International Cup. From the same male line as Silvano, Gitano Hernan-do has five first crop 2yos on sale. They include a colt out of a half sister to Horse Of The Year Celtic Grove (lot 98), a half brother to useful filly Jolly Poppins (lot 109), and a filly whose dam is a half sister to Gr1 winning millionaire National Spirit (lot 336).

The well performed Main Aim was a top class racehorse, who won the Gr3 John Of Gaunt Stakes twice and finished second in the Gr1 July Cup. Main Aim is a son of champion sprint-er and world leading sire Oasis Dream, sire of the top sprinters Goldream and Muhaarar in 2015.
