Instructions for candidatesThis assessment applies to the assignment for National 5 Music Technology.

This assignment is worth 70 marks. The marks contribute 70% of the overall marks for the Course assessment. The Course will be graded A–D.

Your assessor will let you know how the assessment will be carried out and any required conditions for doing it.

In this assignment you will record a short radio broadcast.

You will record or source jingles, sound effects, introductory music and the voices of the presenters. You must use at least 5 tracks to create the recording. At least two of your tracks must use a microphone in the recording chain.

There are three stages to this task and marks will be awarded for each stage:

Planning 15 marks Implementation 45 marks Evaluating 10 marks

Throughout the task, you are required to keep a record of progress. This could be an informal log or diary, and could be handwritten or kept electronically.

You should update your record of progress after each stage of the task. It should explain what you have done, describing any help you required, and listing any evidence you have produced (printouts, sketches, photographs, sound files).

After each stage of the task, get your assessor to check your work before moving on to the next stage.

1. Set up your recording session within your software. Add mono and stereo tracks as required.

2. Import the music into your session.

3. Set up your recording space.

4. Direct the recording, allowing retakes if necessary. Try to maintain the flow of a live broadcast.

5. Edit your broadcast, removing unwanted sections and unusable takes.

6. Place your music at the appropriate points in the interview. You may not wish to use the entire piece of music, in which case you will need to decide where you will fade in/out.

7. Add EQ/dynamics to the voices. You are aiming for a ‘radio voice’ here so you may wish to EQ appropriately and use gates and compression. You can use screenshots to document settings.

8. Add reverb/ambiences to the voices as appropriate.

9. Listen to the whole project several times, adjusting balances as necessary.

10. Bounce down to an audio master.
