I will never forget Midlands Italian Car Day 2010
at Chatsworth. Arriving at 8am, the field (pictured
above) was empty, bar about 100 sheep! An over-
early arrival in his Fiat Panda was very handy to
have as he did his best to help shepherd them
down to the far end of the site. During the morning
the cars just kept coming and coming, Our
conservative on the day was 460. We had house
admission discount passes for about 400 cars,
thinking that may have been too many, so we had
to get very creative with MITCAR stickers for the
‘excess!’ One other exciting moment was when the
aforesaid sheep decided to make a break for it
through our entrance gate... Seeing them skipping
high in the air over the front of some immaculate
Fiat Dinos rather sticks in the memory!
Six years on the same area will be used for
National Alfa Day 2016, and an even bigger
attendance is expected, There will be trade stands,
model parking, dealer displays and the National
AROC Concours d'Elegance. Lots to see and do in
our area, then there is the grand house itself and
its magnificent gardens, plus a kids adventure play
area and lots more. Standard admission to ’NAD’
gets your car and all occupants in the main display
area and at the entrance you will receive a pass
that you can show at the public gate to receive a
substantial discount on admission, paying £13 per
adult rather than £20. Members can get an
advance display area car ticket for £8 via the link
on the Club’s main website - that gets you a ‘print
your own’ ticket. Otherwise it is £10 per car on the
day (for members’ or non-members’ cars). Anyway
it is shaping up to be a terrific day out in some
beautiful countryside.
As you will see inside, June was a tremendously
busy month for our Section with what felt like
something on every weekend. (Well there was if
you went to Cotswolds Alfa Day!) Thanks for the
terrific support at the Fun Concours Night and the
Fox Run in particular. The Glider Centre day was
sadly rain affected but we had a decent number
over to the first ‘Forza LIVE’ event from the Fiat
boys. Now July still has 3 events - 4 counting
AROC’s presence at The Silverstone Classic
Weekend, so again lots to do this month I’m on
holiday at the end of July so will miss the Melton
Mowbray event again, but I gather it was really
good last year and kindly Graeme and Shona are
organising things there for us. Our ‘Summertime
Spin’ evening promises to be fun again too on 8
July at the G&D… You can’t say we’re inactive
anyway! I look forward to seeing you
at the G&D and of course ‘NAD’ -
hope you can make it. John

Summertime Spin Wednesday 13 July from 7pm
George & Dragon, Thringstone
Assuming we have good weather, our July
meeting will include a convoy run around the
local lanes. That will leave at around 7.45, lasting
for about 30minutes. Section Dep Chairman
Brian Smith will lead the way, possibly in his 4C
Spider, so if we lose sight we will still probably be
able to hear him! We always enjoy the summer
evenings at the George & Dragon. Food is served
until 9pm, so if you fancy eating there will be
plenty of time to order after the run.
Classic Car Evening Melton Mowbray Town Centre
Friday 29 July from 6pm onwards
We are repeating our trip to Melton which was
enjoyed by many last July and despite the title, all
Alfas are welcome, new or old. Around 50 to 60
assorted classic cars gather on every last Friday
of the month in Melton Mowbray town centre, and
for this edition again we’ve organised for all Alfas
to park there too. Section Regulars Graeme
Chessum with his partner Shona are kindly co-
ordinating things with the event’s organiser. Just
like last year, our Alfas will be parked at the north
end of the High Street close to Argos. To get
there it is best to turn into the west end of High
Street from Wilton Road (Iceland store on the
corner.) Then it is second left (also called High
Street), and Argos is just up there.

The fantastic new Giulia finally launched in UK! See inside….

ALFISTI - AROC East Midlands Section Newsletter July 2016 - Issue 187
Goodwood Festival of Speed
“Alfa Romeo will be demonstrating the full power of the marque when the
Italian brand debuts the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia in the UK for the first
time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (23 - 26 June) alongside some of
the greatest racing vehicles in its illustrious history.”
With this press release in mind, several members of our Section trekked
down to Glorious Goodwood on the Thursday ‘press day’ to witness the
Giulia in the metal. Setting off bright and very early - OK, very early - I arrived
with Keith Krog, his son StJohn and Brian Smith in the depths of the
Hampshire countryside and the famous hill climb course in Lord March’s
back garden. I won’t go on about the journey—suffice to say in the
downpours it was a bit grim and 5 hours long! Jamie Porter’s 147 1.6
‘loaner’ Keith had was brilliant though. 83K on the clock but fresh as a
daisy!
Now, once at the show and having negotiated the Glastonbury-style
quagmire, the Alfa Romeo ‘stand’ was suitably impressive. As well as the
Giulia, we had the first appearance of the new MiTo with its Giulia-style nose,
plus the Giulietta.
A snapshot of Alfa Romeo's legendary motorsport heritage was also on
display at the Festival, with an Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, Alfa Romeo 33/3 Le
Mans Spider and an Alfa Romeo 33 TT 12 present. An original 1963 Giulia
TI Super was also shown alongside its new namesake on the Alfa Romeo
stand.
Completing the Alfa Romeo line up on the stand was one of only 50 Alfa
Romeo 4C Spider Limited Editions, created to pay homage to 50 years of the
Alfa Romeo Spider. (Basically a 4C Spider loaded with extras, and very nice
too!)
So - what of the Giulia then? Well, first up on the stand was a LHD
standard version, in Italian ‘Super’ spec with the manual gearbox. It was in
Vesuvio grey with the 18 inch turbine alloys, which are a dark silver. The
cabin felt terrific with some real quality touches. The little things like the feel
of the dolls-eye airvents, the positive click of the controls, the perfectly –
sized steering wheel (it’s a PEACH - complete with starter button), and the
excellent infotainment screen that disappears behind matt glass when off. I
seriously don’t get the ‘criticism’ from the journalists, it’s top-notch, and the
driving position excellent. Another brilliant detail, the weighting/damping of
the bootlid. Just try it when you can. Real thought has gone into that - oh
and the boot space is really big too.
Now, inside the stand the Giulia Quadrifoglio. The version shown in
Competizione Red with standard leather/Alcantara seats, and MASSIVE
(optional) carbon/ceramic brakes. (@ 6K we’re told.) The carbon bonnet is a
work of art and it has to be one of the most impressive under-bonnets in the
market today. The car running up the hill was a QF in black with the
optional carbon-shell seats. They are gorgeous and surprisingly comfortable.
The obnly price revealed at the show was for the QF: £59K OTR before
extras, though the standard kit count is apparently very high. Equivalent C-
Class AMG S (same power LOTS more weight) is around 10K more expensive
specified like for like.
We’re used to the 2016 Giulietta now (example shown in bright Alfa white
in Veloce Spec—beautiful), and this was joined by a white MiTo Veloce.
They’ve done a brilliant job with the new design nosecone, and with 18” 5-
hole alloys in grey it looked superb we thought.
The race cars and super cars in the paddock were just amazing. WAY too
many to mention, we fell in love with many. Goodwood FoS is an amazing
event, I fully recommend this ‘quieter’ press day if you want to get close to
things.
Back to Alfa and it was great to speak to UK Head of Brand Damian Dally
again and many of his management team. So much good stuff to come too,
theirs a real spring on their steps. Thanks to Paul Jones for sorting our
invitations, and great to see Chris Variava, Rob, Steve Bestwick, Steve
Weston and Salvatore there too. The Peroni was very welcome in the
hospitality area!
So, when does everyone get to see the Giulia? Well, you’ll hear about it
very soon. Keep an eye on our AROC communications! Meantime, believe
me, it’s a belter. John (See Giulia photos on page 6. LOTS on our website.)
Our Fox Run this year was a bit different from normal.
We basically wanted to attach a morning drive to a
long Italian lunch rather than focusing on a
navigational run as in years’ past. So out went the
Tulip instructions, in came a convoy run….
We met up at our normal monthly meeting venue,
The George & Dragon at Thringstone, for bacon
butties and a coffee at 10am. It wasn’t long before
the sun broke through and things started to warm up,
with the pub’s long line of flags put up specially for
the Euro 2016 Championship forming a super
backdrop for our Alfa Romeos.
Brian Smith was the route designer and he kindly
brought along a number of route plans to dish
out Sadly, the initial part of stage 1 was scuppered as
the council was gritting the main road, but we soon
got around that with a crafty diversion!
After about half an hour’s meander across north
west Leicestershire we arrived at the half way point—
Quorndon and Woodhouse railway station on the
Great Central steam line. Now, we timed it perfectly
to coincide with their D-Day event. We were able to
park up near the exit, and after a group donation to
the railway, we could spend best part of an hour
seeing the steam and classic diesel engines come
and go and to take in the ‘wartime’ atmosphere.
There were lots of people in 1940s costume, both
civilian and army, tanks, guns, rows of army tents,
NAAFI wagons, even full-scale (and part scale)
Spitfires. Brian and I will keep people guessing over
whether this was all planned or not forf our event of
course… Brian was great leading the way on his 4C
Spider anyway, a model of throttle restraint!
Anyway, after best part of an hour’s look around we
departed for stage 2, the run through many very
leafy lanes back to Coalville and the wonderful
Ristorante that is La Torre. Chief Chef Fabio was in
charge, and our three course meal was as fantastic
as ever; La Torre being our normal venue for the New
Year Meal. It was a very relaxing afternoon - great to
have 4 youngsters along among our number (46 I
think?) plus the Section’s newest recruit, Sofia, the
beautiful 4-week-old baby belonging to Steve and
Nicki Weston.
All in all a really enjoyable day, helped by some
proper summer weather but mainly the great
company. Thanks again to everyone. John
(As ever, lots more photos on our website!)

ALFISTI - AROC East Midlands Section Newsletter July 2016 - Issue 187
Our Fun Concours is always a really popular event and though we were short of a few of our
‘regulars’ we were delighted to have 42 Alfas taking part, including several first-timers. We even
roped in Carl & Heather Scott who had turned up on-spec on the night with their silver GT!
In raw numbers, in addition to the Cherry and the 595 we had 7 ‘new’ Giuliettas, 1 MiTo, 2
Breras, 1 939 Spider, 1 159, 4 GTs, 4 916 GTVs, 5 916 Spiders, 2 156s, 1 147, 1 155, 2 166s, 1
Giulia Spider, 3 Bertone coupes and 1 Alfetta Coupe. So - a really good variety from the 1960s to
date. Strangely the 3 Alfa 4C owners present brought their alternative Alfas—and Keith Krog left his
SZ in the garage as it is in need of a cambelt, but there was plenty to enjoy looking at of course,
As per tradition, everyone present had a voting sheet for the 10 prize categories, and after
around 45 minutes consideration all the votes were called in and totted up. Owing to how
beautifully prepared so many cars were the voting was as well spread as ever - though there were
some ‘stand outs’, notably for the ‘dirty car’ categories where it was very close run between Brian
Smith’s 155 and Graeme Chessum’s GT!.
Our June meeting at the
George & Dragon, Thringstone
Choosing your favourite car was as difficult as ever as the cars were so well presented,
Indeed for some categories 50% of the cars received votes! Anyway after the lengthy
totting up the prize winners were as follows:
Shiniest Paintwork: Viv Stephens, GTV Cup
Dirtiest Paintwork: Brian Smith, 155
Cleanest Wheels: Gavin Childs, 159Ti
Dirtiest Wheels: Graeme Chessum, GT
Cleanest Interior: Roger Smith, 916 Spider
Most annoying dent or chip: Ian Jephcott, 166
Cleanest Engine Bay: Marcus Lee, 147 GTA
‘Needs a bit of work’: Dave Roberts, Nissan Cherry Europe
‘Real Effort’: Salvatore Vitale, 156 GTA
Car of the Night - FIRST: John Vincent, 1300 GT Junior
Car of the Night Runner Up: Viv Stephens, GTV Cup
Despite there being at least 12 new people along this time and involved in the public
vote of course, the ‘1 and 2’ were the same as last year. How about that?
Thanks to everyone who came along to make it such a good evening and to Chris
Variava and B&W AutoCare (Autoglym) for their prize donations. John Above - Viv Stephen’s GTV Cup won ‘Shiniest Paint’ and was the runner up in the ‘Car of the Night’ category.
Above, John G presents John Vincent (on right) with his prizes for Car of the Night. John’s car, left, is a very smartly prepared 1300 GT Junior which is used in classic navigational rally events.
Below - the rarest car of the night was this remarkable Nissan Cherry Europe 1.2 belonging to Dave Roberts. This is effectively a ‘barn find’ and once seen he had to have it! The car was also sold as the Alfa Romeo ARNA, a child of the early 1980s it was built in Italy with the Nissan shell but Alfasud boxer engine running gear. Hardly any left!
Gliding Centre Open Day, 12 June. We had a very enjoyable day at the Gliding Centre at Husbands Bosworth
in 2015, sadly this year it was badly affected by the weather. Low cloud
and drizzle meant the planes couldn’t get up, and even the model
aircraft displays were scrapped.
Still, 10 Alfas congregated for the our line up display, at different times
though, and the club house was put to good use when the drizzle
started. The bacon butties were great!
With weather forecast the whole event seemed to be scaled back a
tad, which was a real shame. The arrival of a bright orange Lamborghini
Aventador SV was fun in the morning though - what a machine! The day
saw first appearance of Dave Atkins’ very rare 155 Q4 too. Dave loves
his unusual Alfas and this one is a cracker. For the uninitiated, this was
the first high-performance 155, with 2.0 Turbo-charged engine and a
permanent four-wheel drive powertrain, both derived from the Lancia
Delta Integrale; it was essentially a Lancia Delta Integrale with a different
body. Running 190PS and 215 lbs/ft of torque, 0-60 is dealt with in just
under 7 seconds. Now, these appeared in ‘narrow body’ guise foirst in
1993 - and was the homologation basis for the amazing DTM-winning
155 V6 Ti. Dave’s is a slightly later example with the attractive wide-
body set up and Sport kit - including the 16in Speedline alloys. It was
originally registered in France. It’s a lovely car anyway.
So - we’re looking forward to the bigger version of this event on 4
September - the Leicester Aero Club Open Day. Hopefully we’ll have
some blue skies and sunshine for that one. John

Bugs We’re getting to that time now
where almost every journey means a
windscreen and front bumper
splattered with dead bugs After one
of my recent journeys the nose of
my Giulietta looked like some kind
of insect Valhalla. They soon seem
to get baked on too. So, best ways of shifting them. A good
shampoo will soften them eventually, but I prefer to use a chemical
attack, especially if the rest of the car is clean and I don’t want a
bucket out. In some past editions I’ve mentioned Car Plan’s bright
pink product ‘Bug Blitz’, and it is good, but recently I’ve been trying
some others. Firstly, the good old ‘All Purpose Cleaner’ I wrote
about in the April edition of the Club magazine, Flash Liquid
(diluted 10:1 with water). It’s surprisingly good, but not super-fast
acting. The products below are more specialist. Angelwax Revenge
is available online for £6.99 for 500ml (plus delivery), it has a
pleasant Citrus smell and can be used ‘solus’ - ie sprayed on with
bugs wiped away with a cloth (a bit messy!) or as a solvent that is
then shampoo washed off. Actually I bought some 2 years ago for
my car Detailing bag and still have lots left. Now I am also a sucker
for a bargain and spotting a 500ml trigger bottle of Simoniz ‘Insect
& Tar Remover’ in my local Tesco I had to try it when I saw it was
only £2.50! As a dual-
purpose product it is
essentially a
detergent, and on
bugs it does a decent
job. As with Revenge,
spray on, leave to
penetrate and then
wipe away. It is good
on windscreens
without reverting to
gallons of screen
cleaner or a bucket of
water. Revenge is
clearly better, but the
Simoniz product does
a decent job. John
Alfa Giulietta TCR Series Update The Romeo Ferraris team who are developing the Giulietta TCR race car ended up
missing two rounds, including the only Italian round at Imola, as it sort to get its
charger completely sorted after a succession of issues.. The car appears to have
been thoroughly rebuilt
and the BEST news is it
is now in proper Alfa
Racing Red!! Two cars
are now racing, piloted
by Michela Cerruti and
Petr Fulin. At
Salzburgring Michela
brought the car in 8th
place in Race 1, a very
decent result. The car’s
new aero helping. The
car is expected to get
the 2L Giulia engine
soon too…
New boss of Alfa Romeo and Maserati ….is an American! Reid Bigland takes over from Harald Wester after his 4 years at
the helm. Reid has managed the American FCA arm for the past six years. 48-year-
old Bigland is ten years younger than his German predecessor and has dual US and
Canadian citizenship. Bigland has extensive experience in the commercial field and,
according to overall boss Marchionne, the key man for helping Alfa Romeo’s major
new model push. Maserati, especially in the US market, could use a nudge in the
right direction too. But
Marchionne sees
Bigland also a talent to
best glands well the
global market. Over the
past 7 years has
Bigland in the US
reached the necessary
commercial success
with FCA. Harald
Wester will take place
in the top board.
Marchionne’s
successor in 2018??

Fiat Forum's ForzaLIVE! event was fun at
Shipley Gate near Eastwood. ’Miles from

pub owned by ex-Showaddywaddy drummer
Malcom Allured. It has a mix of hard standing,
gravel and grass paddock areas, though
some was waterlogged.
Getting on for 100 Italian cars arrived
during the day, which was less than hoped
for, that including around 20 or so Alfas.
Amongst them 2 4C Spiders (CV's and Brian
Smith's), and 3 show cars from Chris
Variava. Declan Gray had his black MiTo
Cloverleaf in the ‘Show and Shine’
competition which was very well presented,
but Fiats won out for the prizes. There were
Some really fun cars there - especially the
creative Fiats.
During the morning we welcomed all Alfas
into our line up including 3 cars we’d not seen
before from elsewhere in the country. (No
sign of ‘Alfabook’ incidentally.) Anyway, big
thanks to Dom and the FF events team for
putting on a very enjoyable day Our Section
will support the event again. Avoiding Fathers'

rolling road had broken, that's the fun of
putting on events I guess - but the Gelato

Dave is another guy with more than the odd car! After over a year with this
classic he fancies a change so his Giulia went up for sale in May. The Giulia
lived in Italy for the
bulk of its life, but
has only amassed
24,000kms since its
registration in 1970!
With a fabulously
original interior to

cruise around 70mph. So
it can do good cruising
economy as well as
demolishing back roads!
My love & respect for the
thing is undiminished 7k
miles in :) Alex
Alfa Spider - Derek Duffill
Derek and his wife Pat joined in the Fox run in their lovely bright silver 939
Spider. Fitted with deep red leather it is a bit of an unusal colour
combination for
the Spider (we
see more in red
black and white),
but it works
really well.
Derek has also
replaced its
alloys with new
ones via Veloces
- Giulietta
Cloverleaf style
which really suit
the car.
1750 GTV - Phil Levell
Phil apologises for not being at many meetings lately, he’s a very busy guy, but
we will see him along soon and certainly at National Alfa Day. His lovely
Bertone Coupe has had various fettling lately, It has fibreglass wings all-round
and these were expertly aligned last year, this year has been more about
getting it mechanically sorted, and a major service at Jamie Porter’s Alfa
Workshop in March helping a great deal. With the car being a classic step-
front, Phil was
considering
fitting GTA-
style door
handles and
badges, but
he’s decided
against that
for now.
We may well
see Phil’s
Bertone in the
AROC
Concours too…
Go for it Phil!
