SUNDAY MORNING KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

What is Known and Unknown about Abusive Head Trauma AMPHITHEATRE

Carole Jenny, MD, MBA, FAAP, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Washington Medical School (Seattle, Washington, USA)

In this session, we will review medical literature about what the evidence has shown to be true regarding AHT/SBS. We will also discuss the gaps in our knowledge and propose an agenda for future research.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Perpetrators’ Declarations and Dating the Incident: What Do We Learn? AMPHITHEATRE

Catherine Adamsbaum, MD, Professor and Chairman Paediatric Radiology, Bicêtre Hospital APHP, Paris-Sud University (Paris, France)Caroline Rey Salmon, MD, Paediatrician and Forensic Scientist (Médecin Légiste), Hôtel Dieu Hospital APHP (Paris, France)

This presentation will correlate legal statements by perpetrators with medical documentation and offer insights on dating of the incident. The key points presented will be 1) The high frequency of repeated shaking (50%), probable yet underestimated; 2) The abnormal behavior of children immediately after being shaken and; 3) The role of brain imaging as a strong indicator of “age different” injuries.

SUNDAY MORNING KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Alternative Causation of Retinal HemorrhagesAMPHITHEATRE

Alex V. Levin, MD, MHSc, Chief, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Genetics, Wills Eye Hospital (Philadelphia, PA, USA)

Retinal hemorrhages can be seen in children from many different etiologies including retinal and systemic disorders. It is critical for physicians to discern these caused from abusive head trauma. In addition to appropriate systemic evaluations and related laboratory and radiologic investigations, detailing the specific types, distribution, number and patterns of retinal hemorrhage can be essential. Although there is no pathognomonic specific retinal finding for abuse, in the context of systemic, laboratory and radiologic findings, certain types and distributions of retinal hemorrhage become more specific for abusive head injury where other patterns of hemorrhagic retinopathy may be nonspecific or diagnostic of other entities unrelated to child abuse.

MONDAY AFTERNOON KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Spinal Injury in SBS/AHT: Patterns and RecommendationsAMPHITHEATRE

Alison M. Kemp, Professor, MB BCh, DCH, MRCP, FRCPCH, FRCP Edin, Professor of Child Health Cardiff University, School of Medicine (Cardiff, Wales, UK)Sabine Maguire MBBCh, MRCPI, FRCPCH, Senior Lecturer in Child Health, Cardiff University, School of Medicine (Cardiff, Wales, UK)

This talk will focus on 1) the evidence base behind the nature of spinal injury in physical abuse derived from a Core-info systematic review of the international scientific literature 1970-2013; 2) recommended radiological investigations to identify or exclude spinal injury; 3) a discussion around the proposed mechanisms of spinal injury.

sessions plénières

LUNDI 5 MAI MATIN 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Autres causes d’hémorragie rétinienneAMPHITHEATRE

Alex V. Levin, MD, MHSc, Chief, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Genetics, Wills Eye Hospital (Philadelphia, PA, USA)

Alison M. Kemp, Professor, MB BCh, DCH, MRCP, FRCPCH, FRCP Edin, Professor of Child Health Cardiff University, School of Medicine (Cardiff, Wales, UK)Sabine Maguire MBBCh, MRCPI, FRCPCH, Senior Lecturer in Child Health, Cardiff University, School of Medicine (Cardiff, Wales, UK)

AMPHITHEATRE

Carole Jenny, MD, MBA, FAAP, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Washington Medical School (Seattle, Washington, USA)

Catherine Adamsbaum, MD, Professor and Chairman Paediatric Radiology, Bicêtre Hospital APHP, Paris-Sud University (Paris, France)Caroline Rey Salmon, MD, Paediatrician and Forensic Scientist (Médecin Légiste), Hôtel Dieu Hospital APHP (Paris, France)

TUESDAY MORNING KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Long-Term Outcome of Non-Accidental Head Injury AMPHITHEATRE

Mathilde Chevignard, MD, PhD, Rehabilitation Department, Saint-Maurice Hospitals (Saint-Maurice, France)

This talk will focus on a review of studies that have reported long-term outcomes of children following non-accidental head injury, considering a range of domains: neurological outcome (including sensory-motor deficits and epilepsy), cognitive and behavioral outcome, as well as academic achievement, school and community integration and the amount of care, treatments still necessary over the long-term.

The talk will also consider predictors of those outcomes, in order to promote improved follow-up of children who sustained such injuries.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Diagnosing Abusive Head Trauma: The Challenges Faced by Clinicians AMPHITHEATRE

John M. Leventhal, MD, FAAP, Yale School of Medicine (New Haven, CT, USA)

In this talk, I highlight 5 important aspects of the evaluation of young children who are suspected of having abusive head trauma: 1) the clinical questions to be addressed, 2) challenges when evaluating young children with suspected abuse, 3) key aspects of clinical practice and data collection, 4) a framework for decision-making, and 5) key articles in the literature that can help inform a sound clinical decision about the likelihood of abuse.

MARDI MAI 6

MARDI 6 MAI MATIN 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Le devenir à long terme du Traumatisme Crânien InfligéAMPHITHEATRE

Mathilde Chevignard, MD, PhD, Rehabilitation Department, Saint-Maurice Hospitals (Saint-Maurice, France)

John M. Leventhal, MD, FAAP, Yale School of Medicine (New Haven, CT, USA)

paris activities

EIFFEL TOWER

An obvious destination and a globally recognized symbol of Paris, the Eiffel Tower is just a 15 minute walk away from the conference venue’s front door. Take the lift to the top and enjoy views of Paris that can reach up to 40 miles on a clear day.

ARC DE TRIOMPHE

Ordered to be constructed in 1809 by Napolean to honor the achievements of his armies, this iconic monument provides one of the best rooftop views of Paris and is a breathtaking site of its own. Just a short 10 minute car ride (20 minutes by bike) from the conference venue, the Arc de Triomphe is not to be missed while in Paris.

THE LOUVRE

Located on the right bank of the Seine and only 10 minutes by car (25 minutes by bike) from the conference venue, the largest and most visited museum in the world showcases some 35,000 works of art and artifacts. Built as a fortress under the rule of Philip II in the late 12th century, the Louvre’s building itself is a work to be admired.

NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL

Within 20 minutes of leaving the conference venue, you can find yourself scaling the towers of the famous cathedral. You’ll get a close-up view of the Gothic art and massive bell (the Bourdon) that help make this landmark so famous.

VÉLIB’

Available 24 hours a day, Vélib’ is a bike-sharing program that enables you to see the entire city of Paris by simply renting a bike from one of 1,800 bike stations located every 300 meters throughout the city.
