Even with three weeks to go, top-ranked North Dakota is closing in on its third ever Penrose Cup and could clinch it this weekend with some help. UND leads second-place Minnesota Duluth by eight points and is at St. Cloud State this weekend, while the Bulldogs are at No. 19 Western Michigan. The Fighting Hawks can clinch at least a share of the Penrose Cup by gaining four points on UMD this weekend, while a five-point gain would secure the Cup outright (UND sweeps and UMD gets one tie or swept). Should North Dakota clinch the Penrose Cup, they would join St. Cloud State as three-time NCHC regular-season champions. HOME FOR THE PLAYOFFS: North Dakota became the first NCHC team to lock up home ice for the NCHC Quarterfinal series, doing so last Friday with a win over Denver. UND had hosted the first round of their conference tournament 16 straight seasons until failing to do so last year when they finished fifth in the NCHC. Minnesota Duluth can clinch home ice this weekend with a sweep of Western Michigan, one win at WMU and a St. Cloud State loss to North Dakota, or UND sweeping St. Cloud State plus Omaha dropping one point to Colorado College. Western Michigan could also secure home ice for a second straight season with a sweep of the Bulldogs and SCSU gets swept by North Dakota, plus Omaha drops two points to Colorado College. NUMBER ONE IN NON-CONFERENCE... AGAIN: Colorado College swept cross-town rival Air Force last weekend to finish out non-conference play for the NCHC in the regular season. NCHC teams finished with a combined non-conference record of 49-26-12, with the .632 win percentage tops among the six Division I men’s hockey conferences. The NCHC has now posted the best combined non-conference regular-season win percentage among the conferences in five of the last six seasons, including last year at .659 (52-25-8), and now this season. (page 7) POLL POSITIONS: The NCHC is still home to the No. 1 team in the country, as North Dakota remained in the top spot in both the USCHO. com Poll and USA Hockey Magazine Poll for the third straight week. UND has now been No. 1 in the polls seven weeks this season overall, and are unanimously No. 1 in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll. Western Michigan returned to the USCHO.com Poll this week, giving the NCHC four ranked teams in that poll and three in the top seven of the USA Hockey Magazine Poll. • Western Michigan returned to the USCHO.com Poll at No. 19. It’s the first time WMU has cracked the top 20 since the Dec. 30 poll, when they were also No. 19, ending a run of three straight weeks in that spot. • Three NCHC teams (Denver, Minnesota Duluth and North Dakota) have now held the top spot in 13 of 20 USCHO.com Polls so far this season. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, an NCHC team has been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO Poll in 73 of 92 polls. • Over the last six seasons, an NCHC team has been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO Poll 90 weeks, 75 more weeks than any other conference combined (Big Ten second at 15 weeks). Four different NCHC teams (DU, UMD, UND and St. Cloud State) have all held the No. 1 ranking for at least 19 weeks during that span, all more than any other conference combined.

GAME-WINNERS GALORE: Three of the top four game-winning-goal scorers in the country reside in the NCHC, including the NCAA leader. North Dakota junior forward Collin Adams leads the country with six game-winners this year, while his UND classmate Jordan Kawaguchi and Denver sophomore forward Cole Guttman are two of three NCAA players tied for second in game-winning goals with five each. Adams has 10 goals total on the season, as does Guttman, while four of Kawaguchi’s five game-winners came in November and he has 15 goals this season. Omaha freshman forward Joey Abate and DU sophomore forward Emilio Pettersen are tied for fifth nationally with four game-winners each this season. (page 28)

HOLY KAWAGUCHI: North Dakota junior forward Jordan Kawaguchi ranks second nationally with 44 points this season, as are his 1.52 points per game. His 29 assists are tied for second in the NCAA, with his 1.00 assists per game rank third in the country. Last season, Kawaguchi also led the Fighting Hawks in scoring, but finished the season with 26 points total in 37 games (0.70 ppg, less than half of this season).

WILKIE THIS WAY: Colorado College senior forward Chris Wilkie is tied for second in the NCAA with 20 goals this season. He continues to lead the NCAA averaging 5.11 shots on goal per game, while his 143 shots on the season are also tops in the country. Minnesota Duluth junior forward Nick Swaney is second nationally, averaging 4.64 shots on goal per game, while UMD sophomore forward Cole Koepke is third at 4.18 shots on goal per game. (page 28)

WHAT A SHOT SHOW: Three NCHC teams rank in the top 10 nationally in shots on goal per game, including two of the top three. Western Michigan is second in the country and tops in the NCHC in shots on goal per game averaging 35.30 shots on target per game. Denver is third nationally in shots on goal (34.53), while Minnesota Duluth is ninth (32.68). North Dakota leads the country in fewest shots on goal allowed per game, giving up only 21.55 shots on goal per game to its opponents, nearly one shot per game fewer than any other NCAA team.

THAT’S OFFENSIVE: Five NCHC teams rank in the top 20 nationally on offense in goals per game. North Dakota leads the way, ranking first nationally scoring 4.14 goals per game (the only NCAA team over four goals per game). Western Michigan ranks eighth nationally, scoring 3.47 gpg, while Omaha is 14th in the NCAA (3.23 gpg). Minnesota Duluth sits at 18th in the country, potting 3.18 goals per game on the season, while Denver is tied for 20th (3.03 gpg). (page 29)

CENTURY CLUB ACCESS: Three active NCHC players have already topped 100 points for their career, all seniors, but Minnesota

Duluth junior defenseman Scott Perunovich is next in line for the Century Club among NCHC players with 98 career points (18g, 80a in 109 GP). He would become only the third active junior in NCAA hockey to reach 100 career points and first junior blue liner. Active NCHC career scoring leaders: 1. Hugh McGing, Sr., F, WMU - 110 points (41g, 69a) 2. Gordie Green, Sr., F, Miami - 109 points (44g, 65a) 3. Jack Ahcan, Sr., D, SCSU - 100 points (20g, 80a)Green was the first active NCHC player to join the Century Club on Dec. 30, but has since been edged by McGing for the lead. Ahcan was the first active NCHC defenseman to reach 100 career points on Feb. 8.

YOU STAY CLASSY, HUGH MCGING: Western Michigan senior forward and captain Hugh McGing has been named one of only 10 finalists among men’s ice hockey student-athletes for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award in 2019-20. McGing is the lone representative from the NCHC up for the national award, which honors seniors who excel both on and off the ice, and in the community. The winner is announced on April 10 at the Frozen Four in Detroit, Mich. No NCHC player has won the award since the NCHC started in 2013-14.

HOBEY HOPEFULS: Fan voting for the 2020 Hobey Baker Award opened in mid-January and 14 NCHC players were nominated by their schools, with all eight teams having at least one representative. The NCHC’s lone Hobey Baker Award winner is former Denver defenseman Will Butcher in 2017. Among the NCHC’s 14 nominees, nine are forwards, four are defensemen and one is a goaltender. By class, six NCHC nominees are seniors, five are juniors and three are sophomores. The 14 nominees trail only ECAC Hockey’s 16 among conferences. The 14 nominees are:

Kawaguchi continued his Hobey Baker-worthy campaign in January, leading the conference

and ranking second nationally with 14 points in nine games, while leading UND to a 6-2-1 record. His 14 points were three more than any other NCHC player during the month, while his six goals tied for the conference lead and his eight assists tied for third in January. Kawaguchi registered a point in eight of nine games in the month, including five multi-point outings. Kawaguchi opened January on a seven-game point streak, including a pair of points both nights in a home sweep of Alabama-Huntsville to start the new year on Jan. 3-4. Kawaguchi tacked on five points in a tie and win at Miami on Jan. 17-18, including a goal each night. The undrafted free agent tallied two points in the series opener at Minnesota Duluth Jan. 24, while capped his month with an assist on the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Colorado College. Kawaguchi averaged 1.56 ppg in January to lead the NCHC, while he fired 23 shots on goal. Eight of his points came on the power play, tops in the country, including two goals and six assists.

Brink led NCHC rookies with both six assists and nine points in January. His 1.12 points

per game also led all NCHC newcomers in the month, while he potted three goals for the Pioneers. Brink fired 21 shots on goal in Jan-uary, tying for the NCHC freshman lead, as did his +5 plus/minus. The Philadelphia Flyers draft pick tallied a point in seven of the eight games in he played in January, including two multi-point outings, while helping Denver to a 5-1-2 record in those games. After missing DU’s first game in January while returning from the World Junior Cham-pionship, Brink scored a goal in his first game back from the Czech Republic, a 4-3 win over then-No. 9 UMass on Jan. 4 in the series finale. He then chipped in three assists in a sweep of St. Cloud State the following week-end and had a hand in both DU goals in a 2-2 tie at Omaha Jan. 18, scoring the tying goal in the closing seconds of regulation. Brink finished January with a highlight-reel goal in a 3-2 loss to then-No. 10 UMD on Jan. 31. Brink tallied five of his points on the pow-er play, tops among NCHC rookies in January.

Shepard played every second in net for UMD in January, backstopping UMD to

a 3-3-1 record. He led the NCHC with 209 saves in the month, while ranking second with a .921 save percentage. In seven starts during the month, three of which came against top-five opponents, he compiled a 2.57 goals-against average, which was third in the NCHC. The UMD co-captain also broke the NCAA record for consecutive starts with his 105th straight start on Jan. 25. Shepard compiled 30 or more saves in four of his seven games in January. He opened the month combining for 76 games in a win and tie against Western Michigan, including a career-high-tying 41 saves in the Jan. 11 tie, as he was tabbed NCHC Goalten-der of the Week. Shepard totaled 50 saves in a split with then-No. 2 North Dakota on Jan. 24-25, while he made 39 more saves, the fourth-most saves of his career, to close out the month in a 3-2 win at then-No. 4 Denver on Jan. 31. Shepard upped his season save per-centage by five points in January, improving from .906 on Dec. 31 to .911.

JuLie & SPeNCeR PeNRoSe memoRiaL CuP

Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose

Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second straight and third Penrose Cup overall last season, also winning it in the NCHC’s inaugural season (2013-14). North Dakota has won two Penrose Cups back-to-back (2014-15, 2015-16), while Denver is the only other Penrose Cup champion (2016-17) to date.

While only five NCHC teams were in action Friday, there was plenty of meaningful hockey played with all three home

teams going away happy against their rival. Top-ranked North Dakota pulled away from No. 6/5 Denver for a 4-1 win at home to lock up home ice for the first round of the NCHC Tournament. In the only other NCHC game Friday, Miami erased a two-goal deficit to tie Western Michigan, 2-2, and then scored in 3-on-3 overtime to earn the extra NCHC point in Oxford. In non-con-ference play, Colorado College rolled past cross-town rival Air Force, 6-2, at the Broadmoor World Arena to retain the Pikes Peak Trophy for a second straight season.

No. 1/1 NORTH DAKOTA 4, No. 6/5 DENVER 1Scoring the game’s final three goals, including two on the power play, top-ranked North Dakota pulled away from rival No. 6/5 Denver for a 4-1 win Friday at Ralph Engelstad Arena. With the win, UND clinched home ice for the first round of the NCHC Quarterfinals. Freshman forward Shane Pinto put UND in front early with a redirect, but Denver freshman Bobby Brink tied it early in the second with a blast on the power play. North Dakota answered with a power play goal of its own minutes later when junior defenseman Matt Kiersted’s shot nipped senior Westin Mi-chaud in front of net for the game-winner. Junior forward Collin Adams added a goal later in the second stanza, while sopho-more defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker sealed the win with UND’s second power play goal in the final frame. Junior forward Jordan Kawaguchi chipped in two assists, while classmate Peter Thome made 26 saves as UND was outshot by Denver, 27-23, win the win.

MIAMI 2, WESTERN MICHIGAN 2 (OT)Miami erased a two-goal deficit behind a pair of power play tallies to snap a five-game losing streak and earn a 2-2 over-time tie with rival Western Michigan Friday at Steve Cady Arena. The RedHawks then earned the extra NCHC point on a goal from senior captain Gordie Green in 3-on-3 overtime. WMU took an early 1-0 lead when senior forward and captain Hugh McGing scored on his team’s first shot of the game in the slot. Soph-omore defenseman Mattias Samuelsson then finished a feed down low to double WMU’s lead in the second stanza. With a minute left in the middle period, sophomore forward Matt Barry popped in a rebound on the power play to get MU within one, while classmate Derek Daschke ripped a shot on the power play early in the third period to tie the game and force overtime. Barry and Daschke assisted on each other’s goals, while Green assisted on both goals before scoring in the second extra session on a wrap-around. Miami outshot WMU, 30-28, in the tie.

COLORADO COLLEGE 6, AIR FORCE 2Behind a three-goal outburst early in the second period, Colo-rado College rolled past cross-town rival Air Force, 6-2, Friday at the Broadmoor World Arena to secure the Pikes Peak Trophy once again. Senior forward Chris Wilkie opened the scoring in the first frame, while classmate Nick Halloran doubled the lead only 11 ticks into the second stanza. Fellow senior Alex Berar-dinelli made it 3-0 minutes later, while freshman defenseman Connor Mayer scored the first of his two goals on the night 21 ticks after that to make it 4-0 and put the game out of each. The Falcons closed within 4-2 late in the second, but Mayer’s

second goal of the night in the third period thwarted any hopes of a Air Force comeback. Sophomore forward Ben Copeland handed out a career-high three assists in the win, while fresh-man goalie Matt Vernon stopped 27 shots for the Tigers as CC was outshot, 29-22, despite the win.

Only two conference games were on the slate Saturday night and neither saw an upset as both North Dakota and West-

ern Michigan earned wins. The top-ranked Fighting Hawks struck once each period to down No. 6/5 Denver, 3-1, and complete a weekend sweep, extending their first-place lead to eight points over No. 4/4 Minnesota Duluth, who was idle this weekend. In the other game Saturday, Miami struck less than a minute into the game, but WMU answered back nine ticks later and scored the game’s final four goals to top the RedHawks, 4-1, in Oxford.

No. 1/1 NORTH DAKOTA 3, No. 6/5 DENVER 1Behind a goal each period, top-ranked North Dakota held off No. 6/5 Denver for a 3-1 win Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena, completing a weekend sweep and finishing 3-0-1 against DU in the regular season. Junior defenseman Matt Kiersted opened the scoring midway through the first period with a power play tally, while UND doubled its lead halfway through the second stanza when fellow junior Collin Adams finished a feed from classmate Jordan Kawaguchi. The Pioneers cut the deficit in half five minutes later when freshman forward Brett Edwards lit the lamp, but UND junior goalie Peter Thome made 10 third-period saves and sophomore forward Jasper Weatherby tacked on an empty-netter in the closing seconds to seal the win. Denver outshot UND, 26-24, despite the loss, while Thome compiled 25 saves in the win.

WESTERN MICHIGAN 4, MIAMI 1Western Michigan scored the game’s final four goals to pull away from rival Miami and down the RedHawks, 4-1, Saturday at Steve Cady Arena, picking four points on the weekend to move four points clear of Denver in third place. Miami came out on fire as sophomore forward Monte Graham scored only 39 seconds into the game, but the Broncos answered right back with fellow sophomore forward Cole Gallant evening the game only nine ticks later. The game remained level at 1-1 until senior defen-seman Cam Lee scored his third goal in three games midway through the second stanza for the game-winner. A few minutes later, senior forward Dawson DiPietro tacked on an unassisted tally to double the WMU lead, while junior forward Paul Washe completed the Broncos’ scoring in the third period. Western Michigan outshot Miami, 37-20, in the win, including by at least four shots all three periods.
