    IntroductionThe Book of Psalms

We’re going to camp in the Psalms this summer. They are some of the earliest recorded worship songs in history. Think of them as campfire songs, campfire stories. They have a profound ability to touch the deepest emotions of the human heart.

In Psalm 119:11, King David says, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

We want to encourage you to go beyond the weekend experience and hide the Psalms in your heart through the daily discipline of memorization. We don’t just want to get through the word; we want to get the word through us. There’s no better way to do that than to memorize scripture. The reason is simple: memorization allows the message to sink into your spirit in a way that’s impos-sible with reading. Don’t be surprised if you discover things you never noticed before!

We are so excited about memorizing the Psalms, we’ve provided this booklet to help you engage. It will guide you through one Psalm each week and provide a short passage for us to memorize together. It also has space for sermon notes and journaling so you can record what God teaches you throughout the series. Mark it up. Make it your own.

Finally, make sure to share what you are learning. We really do believe one summer can change your life and your relationship with God, but we are convinced it happens best in community.

Psalm 119A Psalm of David1 Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord.2 Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts.3 They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in his paths.4 You have charged us to keep your commandments carefully.5 Oh, that my actions would consistently reflect your decrees!6 Then I will not be ashamed when I compare my life with your commands.7 As I learn your righteous regulations, I will thank you by living as I should!8 I will obey your decrees. Please don’t give up on me!9 How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.10 I have tried hard to find you— don’t let me wander from your commands.

  • 5

11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.12 I praise you, O Lord; teach me your decrees.13 I have recited aloud all the regulations you have given us.14 I have rejoiced in your laws as much as in riches.15 I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.16 I will delight in your decrees and not forget your word.

    Dwelling PlaceWeek 4

Psalm 84A psalm of the descendants of Korah, a song.1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies.2 I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God.3 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her youngat a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God!4 What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises. Interlude5 What joy for those whose strength comes from the Lord, who have set their minds on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.6 When they walk through the Valley of Weeping,[b] it will become a place of refreshing springs. The autumn rains will clothe it with blessings.7 They will continue to grow stronger, and each of them will appear before God in Jerusalem.[c]8 O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies, hear my prayer. Listen, O God of Jacob. Interlude

9 O God, look with favor upon the king, our shield! Show favor to the one you have anointed.10 A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else!I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked.11 For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.12 O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, what joy for those who trust in you.

    Week 5

Psalm 1391 O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave,[a] you are there.9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.11 I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—

12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book.Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.17 How precious are your thoughts about me,[b] O God. They cannot be numbered!18 I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!19 O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers!20 They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name.21 O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?22 Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies.23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

    BrokenheartedWeek 6

Psalm 341 I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises.2 I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart.3 Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.4 I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.5 Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.6 In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.7 For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him.8 Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!9 Fear the Lord, you his godly people, for those who fear him will have all they need.10 Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing.11 Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the Lord.

  • 41

12 Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous?13 Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies!14 Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.15 The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.16 But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil; he will erase their memory from the earth.17 The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles.18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.19 The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.20 For the Lord protects the bones of the righteous; not one of them is broken!21 Calamity will surely overtake the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be punished.22 But the Lord will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

  • Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.
