Case Study Summary

Our case study was about the national debt that fell onto the United States during the War for Independence. Some of the main problems that caused this debt and kept it in persistance were: • Congress needed the money from the collected import taxes of

each state in order to raise the revenue to pay expenses for the war• Most of the states failed to pay their share of the common

war expenses because they were against raising the revenue for the national goverment

• Frequent disputes and arguements among the states prevented compromises for amendments of the A of C to take place to improve its economic issues and to settle the financial crisis

How did National Debt contribute to the dissatifaction of the confederate system? The National Debt contributed to the dissatisfaction of the confederate system because Congress could not pay off it's debts to other countries and pay off their debts to the citizens all at once. Congress decided that they would pay off the international debts first. Then once they were done to pay off their debts to the ctizens. Congress took very long to pay their debts to the citizens so some of the citizens sold thier certificates for a fraction of the price so they could get the money they needed.

In what respect were the A of C both EFFECTIVE and INEFFECTIVE?

Effective    •  It gave the national

government specific authorities

• It allowed people do what they want with limits

• They had lower taxes for smaller States and higher taxes for bigger States

• Allowed any states to join if they did not rebel aganist America

Ineffective• It did not have a punishment

if the laws were broken• Could have their own laws so

they were all different•  9 out of the 13 states had to

agree before a law was passed

•  All 13 states had to agree before any changes were made to the articles

•  Trading with foreign countries was not controlled
