National Doctors’ Day is held everyMarch 30. According to
DoctorsDay.org, "It is a day tocelebrate the contribution of
physicians who serve our countryby caring for its' citizens."
The first Doctor's Day was observedon March 30, 1933 in Winder,Georgia, when Eudora BrownAlmond - wife of Dr. Charles B.
Almond - decided to set a day asideto honor physicians. In 1990, the
House and Senate officially declaredMarch 30 "National Doctor's Day."
Traditionally, people celebrate theday by going out of their way tothank their doctors, mail greeting
cards, and sending flowers. The redcarnation is commonly associatedwith the National Doctor's Day.
We note the hours you work, the care you give, the lives you touch. Because of your skill and dedication, people all over Southwest Ohio are healthier. From all of us, for all you do, thank you.
We welcome you to share your own thank you note to your physician, PremierHealthPartners.org/thankyourdoctor.

Thanks for alwaystaking the time to care
Far beyond the white-coated glam-our of TV’s primetime
medical shows, the real nitty grittyof being a primary care doctor
means dealing with pain and suf-fering, financial pressure, and thedownright messiness of the humanbody. By presidential proclamation,March 30 is National Doctor’s Day,and in honor of the occasion, hereare some observations from doc-tors and some ways to work to-
gether with them for better patientcare.
According to a March 2011 Con-sumers Reports survey of 660primary care physicians, the
biggest obstacle to patient care isinconsistency. When patients jumpfrom doctor to doctor, their casehistories don’t always follow them
and the trail andconnectivity of symptoms is lost.Seventy-six percent of doctors said
fostering a long-termrelationship between them and
their patients would greatly improve
their ability to provide excellentcare.
Sixty percent of those surveyed re-ported that being respectful and
courteous to doctors would likelylead to more reciprocity in thatdepartment. Calling your doctorby their title and last name and
allowing them toaddress you by yours is a goodstart. Taking care to wash prop-erly before an appointment in-
volving a physical exam isanother important gesture. Beingprepared for an appointment ishelpful too: bring a list of symp-
toms, medications, andquestions to ask.
In the context of providing thebest care possible, other petpeeves that doctors expressed
were patients not takingmedications as directed, patients
bringing in their ownindiscriminate online research, and the burden of insurance
paperwork. The next time you seeyour doctor, keep a few of thesethings in mind and you might see
better results!
Doctors want respect too
