by: Rachel Averill The National Honor Society is a club where students are se- lected for their service, character, leadership and scholarship. N.H.S. has a tapping ceremony where, at an assembly, new members names are called and they go onto the stage to be tapped into the group. At another ceremony, new members pledge themselves to the N.H.S. and are in- ducted. The roles in the N.H.S. are President, Vice President, Sec- retary, Treasurer, and Public Relations. N.H.S. does a lot of fundraising for different organizations and charities like “Duct Tape for Danny” which supports the Barbara Bush Foundation, and honors MVHS student Dan Garneau who died of cancer. They also help with the Linus Project which helps give blankets to firestations so firefighters can give the blankets to children in traumatic situations. The N.H.S. also sells candygrams at holiday times to raise money. N.H.S. meets every Thursday at 7:15 in the morning, in Mrs. Peters’ room. Mrs. Peters is the advisor and she runs the meetings by going through what is on the agenda for that meeting. Unless some- one else has something specific he/she would like to talk about doing. Mrs. Peters is also the only non-principal to be an advisor of the N.H.S. program at the state level, which is a great honor on her part. Once someone is part of the N.H.S program, that person must meet the criteria for staying in N.H.S. Members cannot do any drug(s) or alcohol, mem- bers must participate in activities, and maintain good grades. Cam Welch, an N.H.S. member, was asked what it felt like when he was chosen to be a part of N.H.S. “It felt liberating, you work so hard the first couple of years to finally have it pay off.” Welch also ex- pressed what he thought being an N.H.S. member meant, stating, “I think it means that you are a leader. It doesn’t mat- ter what kind of leader, sports, academics, clubs, etc. it just means that you lead people to do the right thing.” Rebecca Maifeld an- National Honor Society Cam Welch Photo by:John Freeman
