Introduction • NHTS provides very valuable information for Transport Malta

and other entities involved in transport and land-use planning• very clear picture of the travel patterns of the Maltese

population• allows for the better planning of transport infrastructure, both

in terms of road and public transport services. • since two previous such surveys were carried out (1989 &

1998), the NHTS2010 gives us a third point to plot on our graph of changing traffic trends.

Page 4: National Household Travel Survey 2010

National Household Travel Survey 2010National Household Travel Survey 2010Methodology• The NHTS2010 survey methodology was consistent with previous

NHTSs • also corrected the few inefficiencies and anomalies noted in

previous surveys.• The whole project was allocated to external consultants • coordination committee was set up between TM, MITC and PwC. • Marketing the survey during the lead up to Survey Day was a crucial

part of the project.

Sample• The sample selection was taken from the local council electoral

register and proportioned to a statistically representative number of households at a district level.

Feedback• 6,666 households answered – exceeding target of 6,000• 16,952 persons • 41,771 trips covered by NHTS.
