National identity is defined as the feeling of being part of a large community in the forms of a nation, which gives a sense of purpose and meaning to people's lives as well as sense of belonging. Benedict Anderson 1983 claims that a nation is imagined community which millions of people who will never actually meet see themselves belonging to a country.

Politicians have becomes involved in the debate about British culture. Prime minister Gordon Brown called a day for Britain to celebrate its national identity, however we must recognise within Britain there are regional identities. Ethnic minority may feel excluded in a society that promotes Britishness and their own culture feel challenged.

Britain is mixed with social and immigrant groups since Roman times. As Guibernau and Goldblatt 2000 note until 1707 when union linked Scotland to England and Wales there was no such thing as British identity however they argue sense of British identity was created around five key themes such geography because Britain is an island, religion is protestantism dominant in great Britain, war has reinforced the them verses us, British empire brought imperial power in 18th and 19th century through economic success. And Monarchy is the symbol of Britains

Schudsen 1994 points people are socialised into British identity in several ways such as common language English is central in culture., education the teaching of history religion and nature promotes national identity. National rituals are the royal and state occasions which reinforce British way of life., symbols such as dress, uniforms, passport , styles of music, anthems ,flag., media is where royal family show keen interest, Olympic games, world cup and war efforts and mass production of fusion and taste, food e.g. fish and chips and marks and Spencer.
