Brief Abstracts of Invited Speakers in OMCARA 2016
Indian Meditation: CLINICAL AND RESEARCH ASPECTS
Clinical Perspective of Indian Meditation: Dr. R Nagarathna, Medical Director, SVYASA Yoga University, Bengaluru. Mind is a conglomeration of thoughts. The final goal of Meditation
is to reach complete mastery over mind. Different stages of
meditation are ekagrata (concentration=multiple thoughts about a
single topic), dhārana (focusing - single thought, single topic),
dhyāna (defocused expanded thought - effortless flow of single
thought) and samādhi (absorption - merger of the thinker and the
thought). Meditation establishes a state of blissful awareness of
the pure consciousness, the basic stuff of this universe. Thus, all
uncontrolled stressful emotions could be erased over a period of
time through regular practice which forms the basis for management of mind body diseases.
Evidence Base for Therapeutic Utility of Meditation: Dr. Hemant Bhargav, Assistant professor, SVYASA Yoga University, Bengaluru. Meditation is the most researched area in field of yoga with
availability of more than 80 meta-analysis. Probable mechanisms
which might be at work while meditating are cognitive and emotional
reactivity, mindfulness, rumination, worry, self-compassion and
psychological flexibility. It has been found that the areas consistently
affected due to meditation are insula, pre/supplementary motor
cortices, dorsal anterior cingulated cortex and frontopolar complex. It
consistently triggers changes in executive attention networks, body
representations and areas processing interceptive awareness
information. Despite this progress, research in meditation remains a
difficult area with multiple barriers such as lack of objective assessment tools, difficulty in finding
control, subjective bias, and difficulty in describing a meditation-related activation pattern
independent of the practices needed to reach it. Developing better understanding of the
mechanisms and translational value of different types of meditations, advancement in better
assessment tools and long-term follow up studies are the need of the hour.
Dr. Hemanth also took a 45 minutes of practical session of “OM Meditation”.
“When meditation is mastered, the mind is unwavering like the flame of a lamp in a windless place.” ― Bhagavad Gita

Buddhist Meditation: clinical and research aspects
Dr. Manjula Kandula: Faculty at Garden of Samadhi Mind Centre, Bengaluru. Over the years, meditation has earned the status of being a
powerful practice that can relieves stress and improve the
overall health and wellbeing of an individual. Many schools of
meditation, both Indian and Buddhist, have worked very hard
to spread this knowledge all over the world. The growing
popularity of meditation as a stress – relieving practice has
intrigued scientists to study it in greater detail. By designing
detailed and carefully planned biomedical experiments,
scientists have demonstrated a clear link between meditation
and human body functioning. Biochemists too have discovered a strong correlation between
meditation and gene expression. Her presentation delved into some of the published biochemical
studies worldwide.
Dr. Jyothi Kakumanu: PhD Scholar, Dept of Neurophysiology, NIMHANS
Buddhist meditation is an active, investigative process that
inherently involves cognitive, attitudinal, affective, and
ethico-social dimensions. With an increased awareness of its
efficacy in establishing mind-body harmony, there has been a
rising interest in the scientific community from both the East
and the West to understand the concepts of “well-being”
enunciated in traditional Indian philosophical systems.
Vipassana Meditation has come to be known as ‘Mindfulness’
in contemporary neuro-psychology and has been adopted as a clinical approach to manage
emotional distress, maladaptive behaviours and psycho-somatic ailments. Proficient meditative
practice enhances brain functions and capacities towards attaining higher cognitive capabilities and
greater psychological development with higher mental attributes such as unselfishness, compassion,
equanimity. A large body of research suggests that meditation has effects ranging across psychology,
physiology, and biochemistry and can enhance both psychological and physical health
Mr. Dipnkar Khanna: Buddhist Meditation Practitioner, GoS Mr Dipnkar took a 45 minutes practical session on “Buddhist
Meditation” for the audience. In his brief introduction about
Buddhist Meditation, he emphasized the importance of
meditation and elaborated on a few simple techniques of
meditation like focusing on the breath.
