Day 1 – November 1, 2016

Andrew Hargadon, Faculty Director UC Davis Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Professor Andrew Hargadon has written extensively on knowledge and technology brokering and the role of learning and knowledge management in innovation. He has published numerous articles and chapters in leading scholarly and applied publications.

Hargadon is at the forefront of teaching, research and practice in cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship, and is founding director of two key centers at UC Davis Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Energy Efficiency Center. These centers are dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship and innovation through educational programs bridging science, engineering and business. They provide a successful framework for university scientists and engineers to move their ideas out of the lab and into the world.

Hargadon received the 2009 Olympus Emerging Educational Leader Award in recognition for his strong entrepreneurship curriculum and success with the two centers. He received his doctoral degree from the Management Science and Engineering Department in Stanford University’s School of Engineering, where he was named Boeing Fellow and Sloan Foundation Future Professor of Manufacturing. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University’s Product Design Program in the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Prior to his academic appointment, Hargadon worked as a product designer at Apple Computer and taught in the Product Design program at Stanford University.

A senior fellow at the Kauffman Foundation, Hargadon is the author of How Breakthroughs Happen: The Surprising Truth About How Companies Innovate (Harvard Business School Press, 2003). His most recent book is Sustainable Innovation: Build Your Company’s Capacity to Change the World (Stanford University Press, 2015).

Cleveland Justis, Executive Director UC Davis Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Cleveland Justis brings more than 20 years of experience building successful private companies and nonprofits to his role as Executive Director of the UC Davis Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He leads the institute’s strategic direction, program development, fundraising and relations with relevant academic programs at UC Davis as well as its growing network of partners, donors and sponsors across universities, corporations, investors, entrepreneurs, foundations, and state and federal policy makers.

Justis has worked and consulted widely throughout numerous businesses, nonprofits and governmental organizations, including the Potrero Group, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, National Park Service and many leading corporations.

He is the co-founder and former director of the Institute at the Golden Gate, and previously served as executive director of the Headlands Institute in Sausalito, Calif. He is the board chair of the Marin Community Foundation, and formerly served on the board of directors of Net Impact, a 15,000-member international network that employs business to generate social change, and as a commissioner of the Marin County Parks and Open Space Commission. In 2010 Justis received the Distinguished Service Award from the UC Davis Graduate School of Management Alumni Association.

He received his MBA from the Graduate School of Management in 2005, and is pursuing his Ph.D. at UC Davis.

Mike Sharer, Manager of Technology Commercialization Lawrence Livermore National Lab Intellectual Property: Overview from a National Labs Perspective 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Michael is currently the Manager of Technology Commercialization at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), where he has overall responsibility for the Licensing and Industrial Business Development group and associated policies and processes.

He came to LLNL from Western Michigan University (WMU), where he was the founding Director of Intellectual Property (IP) Management & Commercialization for eight years. He was hired to start the new business unit at WMU, to create a long-term plan for managing its IP assets, and to develop commercial opportunities based on those assets.

In total, Michael has over 15 years of experience making and overseeing investment decisions in early-stage technologies and in managing the IP commercialization process. His experience includes negotiating numerous license agreements and helping launch many start-up companies in a broad range of industries and markets.

Michael also has a Ph.D. from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree in business from Purdue University.

Tristan Mahyera, Technical Business Development Specialist Sandia National Labs Intellectual Property: Overview from a National Labs Perspective 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Tristan Mahyera is a Technical Business Development Specialist at Sandia National Laboratories’ California site working on technology transfer and industry partnerships in the biofuel, bio/chem defense and medical fields.

Tristan comes to Sandia from the National Institutes of Health where he worked in technology transfer and intellectual property management. While at NIH he was the recipient of the Federal Laboratory Consortium’s Excellence in Technology Transfer Award for his contribution to the development and licensing by Sequella Inc. of SQ109, a novel tuberculosis and Helicobacter pylori treatment.

Tristan also worked as a Patent Examiner for the US Patent & Trademark Office, where he examined pharmaceutical compositions and medical devices. After the USPTO, Tristan become Patent Counsel

for ADS, a California based nanotechnology company specializing in medical diagnostics, therapeutics and water purification methods. Tristan is a registered patent attorney and has worked at law firms in the US and Europe both in patent prosecution and cross-border litigation.

Allen Northrup, Northrup Consulting Group Guest Entrepreneur 2:00-3:00 p.m. Dr. Northrup earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of California, Davis (UCD) in 1991. During his early years at UCD, Dr. Northrup worked for Finnigan Corporation, a manufacturer of Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometers (GC/MS). As a Post-doctoral Fellow and Engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and as a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), he was the first to demonstrate the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in a micro-machined silicon chip. At LLNL, he raised $12M in funding and also invented and co-developed micro-actuators and micro-actuator materials, which includes over 30 patents. Dr. Northrup has made outstanding contributions to bio-analytical and actuator-based micro-technologies. He loves to build companies and has a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

Keynote Speakers

Patricia Falcone, Deputy Director for Science and Technology Lawrence Livermore National Lab

Patricia Falcone was the Associate Director for National Security and International Affairs in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and is now the deputy director for Science and Technology at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

During her tenure as an Associate Director at OSTP — a position appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate — Falcone advised on a wide range of national security science and technology issues, including the health of national security science and technology capabilities in federal and national laboratories, universities and industry. Prior to her appointment as Associate Director, she was on assignment from Sandia National Laboratories to OSTP, working on science and technology issues associated with nuclear security.

While at Sandia, Falcone served in a variety of technical and management positions and was named a distinguished member of the technical staff in 1989. Falcone has a bachelor of science in engineering in aerospace and mechanical sciences from Princeton University and earned both a master of science and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. Throughout her career, Falcone has worked with Lawrence Livermore and arrives with deep knowledge of the National Nuclear Security Administration and its laboratories.

As a member of the LLNL senior management team, Falcone will serve as the principal advocate and champion of the Laboratory’s science and technology base and oversee the strategic development of its capabilities. She will be responsible for the Laboratory's portfolio of world-class science, technology and engineering (ST&E) activities, collaborative research with academia and the private sector, the Institutional ST&E Roadmap and the internal investment portfolio, including the Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program.

Craig Tewell, Deputy Director for Sandia National Labs Craig Tewell is currently serving as the Deputy to the Vice President of the California Laboratory at Sandia National Laboratories. Craig previously managed the Radiation and Nuclear Detection Systems department in California. In that role, Craig was responsible for managing radiation detection research conducted for the Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security.

Craig started his national laboratory career at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2002 as a technical staff member in the Tritium Science and Engineering department to study metal-hydrogen isotope thermodynamics and kinetics for the nuclear weapons program. In 2004, the science program, and Craig, transitioned to Sandia in Albuquerque, NM. In 2006, Craig began a new career in the International Programs Center. He had various roles in this area, but primarily supported DOE/NNSA’s Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation programs for the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials and Facilities and the Second Line of Defense. In 2008, he transferred to Sandia/California to join the Hydrogen and Metallurgy Sciences Department. He continued to support the Second Line of Defense program but also conducted tritium research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in support of advanced concepts for nuclear weapon components.

Craig holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

Day 2 – November 2, 2016

Tom McWilliams, Bay Area Storage Day 2 - Market Validation: From Lab to Market – Lecture and Panel Discussion 9:15-10:45 a.m. Day 3 - Guest Speaker 11:00-12:00 p.m. Dr. Thomas McWilliams is currently CEO and founder of Bay Storage Technology, a high-performance tiered storage system. He previously was a founder of Schooner Information Technology, PathScale, Key Computer Laboratories and Valid Logic Systems.

Prior to Valid, he served at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), where he was one of the principal designers of the S-1 supercomputer, a joint effort between LLNL and Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1980, where he had a Hertz Fellowship, and his BS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1975.

Shirley Gee, Angel Plus, LLC Market Validation: From Lab to Market – Lecture and Panel Discussion 9:15-10:45 a.m. Shirley Gee is the Founder and Managing Partner at Angel Plus, LLC, a third party validation firm, performing high level, deep dive due diligence on start-up’s anticipating capitalization. She is currently the Chief Operating Office with Coyote Nest, Inc., a Silicon Valley incubator/accelerator located in Stanford Research Park for entrepreneurs from Latin and South America including Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Columbia, and Mexico. She is also an Accredited Investor and Chair of the Life Science and Medical Device Committee with the Keiretsu Forum, one of the largest angel organizations in the world. She also serves as a mentor for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory/University of California/Davis collaborative working with scientists with their start-up aspirations as well as a mentor for Founder’s Space, an international incubator located in San

Francisco. She has the distinction of having been an Executive Senior Member and Department Head with Stanford University’s multi-purpose, international research laboratory working at the pleasure of the President of University and reporting to three Directors, in turn, including the original Founder of the laboratory and then a Nobel Laureate. A frequent panelist and lecturer, she has traveled domestically and internationally sharing her insight regarding Silicon Valley’s capital eco-system, technology transfer between academia and commercial enterprises, and the role of entrepreneurship in facilitating innovation and economic development within emerging economies. Jim Kiles, YStrategies Market Validation: From Lab to Market – Lecture and Panel Discussion 9:15-10:45 a.m. Jim Kiles is an entrepreneurial business, corporate development and strategy executive with powerful, active network and significant experience and success building technology businesses based on security and data management technologies. He has a strong history of developing and closing important strategic partnerships. A senior executive and investor in software companies focused on venture funding and enterprise customers and requirements, Jim developed strategies for predictive analytics for security and internal fraud, data integrity (including exposure of behind the firewall malware, mobility management and security for the extended enterprise [BYOD]), and digital rights management and content protection solutions for video and images.

Jim has also worked with venture capital firms to protect and accelerate significant investments taking executive and board positions in early and mid-stage businesses. Additionally, he co-founded and developed an incubator to help entrepreneurs launch five separate platform technology businesses focused on social good.

Jim has strong skills in strategic thinking and partnerships with ability to understand complicated business and technology requirements. Specialties include strategic partnerships, investment/finance, M & A, negotiation; strategies for accelerating business, negotiation of large scale transactions.

Larry Kelly, Band of Angels Market Validation: From Lab to Market – Lecture and Panel Discussion 9:15-10:45 a.m. Larry grew up in the Detroit area, and, during college years, worked at two companies in the automotive industry.

Larry is a serial entrepreneur and has worked in most aspects of the computer and information industry, in both individual contributor and C-level positions. Since starting Kelly Ventures in 1984, Larry has been its Managing Director, and is active in venture investing and building portfolio companies in both the information and the energy sectors.

Educationally, Larry received an SB in Mechanical Engineering and an SM in Nuclear Science and Engineering from MIT and an MBA from Harvard. He chairs the energy interest group for the Band of Angels and is on the steering committee for the Harvard Alum Angels.

Greg Sommer, Sandstone Diagnostics Technology Validation - Record the Key Uncertainties 2:15-3:15 p.m. Greg Sommer is a PhD-level engineer, entrepreneur, and executive in consumer healthcare and clinical diagnostics. In 2012, Dr. Sommer co-founded Sandstone Diagnostics, a Bay Area diagnostic and digital health company developing sophisticated connected wellness products that allow consumers to measure, monitor, and improve key health markers at home. The company’s first product, the Trak® Male Fertility System received FDA clearance in May 2016.

Prior to founding Sandstone, Dr. Sommer was a Senior Research Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories where he led R&D in point-of-care diagnostic technologies for biodefense and emergency preparedness applications, most notably the Sandia SpinDx system. He is a co-inventor on 18 patents and applications in microfluidic and clinical diagnostic technologies and co-authored 11 peer-reviewed publications.

Roger Werne, Deputy Director of Industrial Partnerships Lawrence Livermore National Lab Guest Entrepreneur: Successes + Learning Opportunities 10:00-11:00 a.m. Roger Werne has forty years of experience in research and development including nuclear weapons, nonproliferation, structures and solid mechanics R&D, medical devices, and technology commercialization, including the founding of one start-up company; led Engineering at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, an organization of over 3000 engineers, technicians and administrative personnel.

Specialties: Leadership and management of large and small engineering organizations; creative and entrepreneurial problem solving; good people management skills.

Quentin Vaughan, Lawrence Livermore National Lab Legal Mistakes to Avoid 2:00-3:00 p.m. Quentin Vaughan is a business attorney with more than 20 years of experience representing and advising companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500 corporations across a wide variety of industries. While in private practice, he worked with many early stage companies in connection with forming and structuring entities, raising capital, negotiating key commercial agreements, technology licensing, acquisitions and other legal matters affecting young companies. Quentin has served as Assistant General Counsel at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 2014. In that role, he works closely with the Laboratory’s Industrial Partnerships Office negotiating licenses, collaboration and other agreements with industry partners. He was also instrumental in enabling the Laboratory to accept equity positions in startup companies in connection with licensing transactions. Prior to joining the Laboratory, Quentin was a Senior Counsel with Abbott Laboratories, a global pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturer, where he was the lead business counsel for a $1.5 billion division. Prior to that, he was a partner at the Phoenix law firm of Lewis and Roca, where he chaired the firm’s Life Sciences practice group and was also a member of the Corporate and Securities group.

Brandon Cardwell, i-Gate Innovation Hub Local + Regional Resources 3:00-3:30 p.m. I started in government and fell in love with entrepreneurship. Now I get to do both, helping bridge the divide between large institutions and agile startups. My passions (aside from my family, music, and food) revolve around the hands-on work of fostering innovation communities by engaging the "full stack" of assets essential for a thriving ecosystem: ideas, people and culture.

Greg Hitchan, Tri-Valley Capital Local + Regional Resources 3:00-3:30 p.m. Greg Hitchan has more than 20+ years of experience in the investment business. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1988 and serving as a Naval Intelligence Officer for 6 years, Greg attended Stanford Law School. Greg practiced corporate and securities law for 7 years in Silicon Valley representing private and public companies in a wide variety of legal matters. In 2005, Greg became the Chief Operating Officer of Blum Capital Partners, a San Francisco based private equity/hedge fund where Greg was involved and responsible for many aspects of the firm's investments and operations. Greg is currently focusing on early stage start up investments in the Tri-Valley region of California with emphasis on innovative and transformative technologies through Tri Valley Capital, an investment firm Greg started in 2012. Tri Valley Capital provides mentor seed capital as well as strategic business advice to startups generally in the Tri Valley. Portfolio companies have raised well in excess of $10mm in seed capital over the last two years and dozens of companies are in a very active pipeline of potential investments. Tri Valley Capital currently occupies and manages a 30k sq ft space in the business center of Pleasanton, which is home to several early stage Tri Valley Capital portfolio companies.

Greg also serves as an Advisor to Lawrence Livermore National Labs Industrial Partnership Office as well as an active member of the Innovation Tri Valley Leadership Group.

Hannah Farquar, Lab Corps Experience + Research 3:30-4:15 p.m. Hannah Farquar is a creator of market intelligence at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She is a science and technology enthusiast by birth and training. Hannah has a PhD in chemistry and a decade of laboratory research experience. The transition from benchtop to desktop has led to another decade in technology transfer—that unique intersection of science, business and law. From this front row seat, Hannah has watched national laboratory technology move from benchtop innovation to market reality.

Yongqin Jiao, Micro Miners Lab Corps Experience + Research 3:30-4:15 p.m. Dr. Yongqin Jiao is a staff Scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Jiao received her PhD in Geobiology from Caltech in 2007. Following a 3-year postdoc at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, she stayed on as a staff scientist since 2010. She is now a principle investigator leading research efforts focusing on bacteria-metal interactions. She was the PI of the Micro Miners team that participated the Lab-Corps Cohort II this spring.

Suzanne Singer, Micro Miners Lab Corps Experience + Research 3:30-4:15 p.m. Dr. Suzanne L. Singer is an energy systems and thermal analyst at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where she supports engineering and energy security. She was the entrepreneurial lead for Team Micro Miners, a participant of the Department of Energy’s Lab-Corps program. Suzanne received her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona, and her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Arthur Karia, Twistact Lab Corps Experience + Research 3:30-4:15 p.m. Arthur is a mechanical engineer at the Energy Innovation department at Sandia National Laboratories and has expertise in thermal-fluidic and mechanical systems. At Sandia, he leads the development of an alternative vapor compression cycle topology for energy efficiency and also works on advanced heat exchangers such as the Sandia Cooler. Previous to Sandia, Arthur was a post-doctoral researcher at MIT, where he received his doctoral and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering.

Jeff Koplow, Twistact Lab Corps Experience + Research 3:30-4:15 p.m. Dr. Jeff Koplow is a research scientist/engineer in the Energy Innovation Department at Sandia National Laboratories. Dr. Koplow is a serial innovator who specializes in multidisciplinary problem solving in the physical sciences and engineering. Dr. Koplow has spent 24 years conducting R&D on a wide range of subject matter. His areas of expertise include applied physics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematical modeling, electromagnetics, optics, lasers, and photonic component design. Dr. Koplow is currently developing technology to enable proliferation of wind power by addressing the reliability and market scalability problems that currently hamper the wind turbine industry, as well as technology to enable proliferation of high efficiency LED lighting.

Wayne Staats, Twistact Lab Corps Experience + Research 3:30-4:15 p.m. Wayne Staats is a mechanical engineer in the Energy Innovation Department at Sandia National Laboratories. Dr. Staats has made numerous important contributions to the Energy Innovation Department’s portfolio of projects. For example, he performed CFD simulations and parametric analysis of impeller blade profiles for the Sandia Cooler, a new type of air-cooled heat sink. He is currently working towards developing a novel variant of the Sandia Cooler to address the longstanding thermal management problem in solid-state lighting. He is also a core member of Sandia’s Twistact team that is developing a fundamentally new rotary electrical contact topology for wind turbine generators and

is currently participating in the pilot of the DOE Lab-Corps technology accelerator program. Prior to joining Sandia, Dr. Staats studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he developed correlations and design methods for a novel class of compact air-cooled heat sinks with integrated centrifugal fans that enhance air-side convective heat transfer.

Justin Vanness, Twistact Lab Corps Experience + Research 3:30-4:15 p.m. Justin Vanness is an engineer within the Telemetry & Stockpile RDCS department at Sandia National Laboratories where he operates as the lead mechanical designer for specialized telemetry sensors. He is also a core team member for many projects within the Energy Innovation department and provides expertise in both electrical and mechanical engineering. These projects include the Sandia Cooler, a fundamentally new CPU cooling design, as well as Twistact, a novel rotary electrical contact device for wind turbine generators. Before joining Sandia, Mr. Vanness graduated from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering where he specialized in control systems.
