Know the fire-safety risks and how you can keep yourself and firefighters safe.

Risks:

Personal items can crowd

cooking equipment, making

it unsafe to cook.

Personal items can crowd

heating equipment, putting

you at risk of having a fire.

Difficulties for firefighters:

Blocked windows and

doors make it difficult for

firefighters to get into your

home to fight the fire and search for occupants.

Piles of belongings make it difficult for firefighters

to move through your home quickly.

Important:

Always keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet

away from cooking and heating equipment.

Keep doorways and windows clear for escape in

case there is a fire. This will also prevent injuries

from falling over excessive personal items.

STORM SEWER SYSTEM

As we enter the most active months of hurricane

season, a brief reminder regarding storm water

runoff through Greenwood Forest's storm sewer

system will help protect our homes from pos-

sible flooding. The Storm Sewer System is limited

to storm water discharges and normal property

drainage such as runoff flow from landscape and

lawn irrigation.

No solids, grass or yard clippings, trash, oils, grease,

etc. should be dumped into or washed in the

storm sewer system. The system needs to be kept

free of debris to allow it to convey storm water as

quickly and efficiently as possible. Maintenance

of the storm sewer system is the responsibility of

Harris County.

The drainage ditches between Fountainhead and

Greenwood Forest on the east and along Scyrus

Road to the west as well as the east-west drainage

ditch east of Greenwood Forest Dr and between

Lodge Creek and Boyce Springs are for storm water

conveyance purposes. They are maintained by the

Harris County Flood Control District and no grass

clippings, trash, or miscellaneous junk should be

placed in the ditches. Protecting and maintain-

ing the storm sewer system and the Harris County

Flood Control ditches will help limit the potential

for flooding in our neighborhood.

Any questions relating to maintenance of the Storm

Sewer System should be directed to:

Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle

1001 Preston, Suite 950, Houston, TX 77002

Phone: (281) 353-8424 • Email: [email protected]

Additionally, any questions concerning roads and

bridges, signage, road emergencies, as well as any

neighborhood concerns should also be directed to

Commissioner Cagle.

Please also note that any resident may make his or

her own work or repair request via the Commis-

sioner’s website: www.hcp4.net/assistance/cad.

THE FOREST NEWS September 2018 5

It's September! School is back in session, the days will

be getting shorter, the weather will be getting cooler

(maybe), and members of the Home and Garden Club

are looking forward to getting together following our

summer break. The first meeting of the 2018-2019

season will be September 27th at the clubhouse. Social

time begins at 9:30 with an assortment of refreshments

to enjoy as we catch up on news from old friends and

meet new members. If you are interested in garden-

ing, civic beautification, and creating a welcoming

and comfortable home, consider joining the Home &

Garden Club. For information, contact Membership

Chairman Wilma Colbert at (281) 440-5288.

First Vice President, Barbara Brent, has arranged a

wonderful and informative program: An Overview of

Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve. This 80- acre forested

tract and park offers nature-related activities for the

entire family.

Right around the corner is our annual indoor garage

sale. Mark your calendars for October 25th for this

popular fundraising event that benefits beautifica-

tion projects in our neighborhood. Start collecting all

those “priceless treasures” that you will donate. Please

contact Carol Pomes at 281-440-4864 to donate or

for more information.

The recipients for August Yard of the Month are

Hubert and Daniele Sovany, 5711 Old Lodge Dr.

Thank you for maintaining a beautiful yard, especial-

ly with the intense heat of a Houston August.

Looking forward to seeing everyone as the Home and Garden Club kicks off another excit-ing year!

AUTO BURGLARY & IDENTITY THEFT

It was concerning to learn that Greenwood Forest

had 8 auto burglaries last month and that every one

of the vehicles was left unlocked. In speaking with

our Constables and reading social media, a num-

ber of residents claim to deliberately leave vehicles

unlocked and without valuables to avoid damage or

perceived loss to their vehicle.

After breaking up a juvenile group and arresting

older auto burglars, our Constables recovered a

criminal’s trove of documents that had been stolen

from the involved vehicles. Vehicle titles, insurance

documents, bank receipts, and large amounts of mail

were among these documents. Documents containing

personal information can be used to steal your iden-

tity or even your gain access to your bank accounts.

Whether you lock your car or not, remove not only

the obvious valuables, but any and all documents

containing personal information.

CLUES THAT SOMEONE HAS STOLEN YOUR INFORMATION

• You don’t get your bills or other mail.

• Merchants refuse your checks.

• Debt collectors call about debts that aren’t yours.

• You find unfamiliar accounts or charges on your

credit report.

• Medical providers bill you for services you didn’t use.

• Your health plan rejects your legitimate medical

claim because the records show you’ve reached

your benefits limit.

• A health plan won’t cover you because your medi-

cal records show a condition you don’t have.

• The IRS notifies you that more than one tax

return was filed in your name, or that you have

income from an employer you don’t work for.

• You get notice that your information was compro-

mised by a data breach at a company where you

do business or have an account.

If your wallet, Social Security number, or other per-

sonal information is lost or stolen, there are steps you

can take to help protect yourself from identity theft.

For more information on how to protect yourself, visit

identitytheft.gov or ftc.gov/idtheft.
