Week 9 Term 3, 2017 NATIONAL NUMERACY AND LITERACY WEEK National Literacy and Numeracy Week is an annual event celebrating the importance of literacy and numeracy to future learning, life participation and work opportunities. Getting involved in National Literacy and Numeracy Week is a great way for parents, schools and the community to help kids develop their literacy and numeracy skills. STOP PRESS On Friday we were informed that DPS has been selected as a supplementary school for the Literacy Action Plan Phase 2 evaluation. Schools invited to participate were carefully selected to ensure they are suitable for the analyses intended for the evaluation. Factors taken into consideration in the selection process included school size, location, socioeconomic status, proportion of aboriginal students, proportion of background other than English students, and student academic achievement. DPS will now become an early adopter of new tools that support teachers to identify and address individual student literacy and numeracy needs including the new Learning Progressions and Best Start Version 2. These tools will assist our classroom teachers to develop a deeper understanding and skills to support students in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy. CLASS NEWS KINDERGARTEN The way in which the Kindergarten students apply themselves to tasks is impressive! Everyone is trying hard to present their best work in a quiet manner. Keep up the wonderful efforts, Kindergarten! The Jolly Phonics program continues to engage all students. Everyone is working at blending sounds to read words, and learning to read very tricky sight words. This term’s literature focus has been the text titled The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland. The students are enjoying reading along with this rhyming story as it is read aloud. In Mathematics, many students can now count a lot further than they could at the end of last term. The students have been learning about equal rows, equal groups, and telling the time on the hour using analog clocks. In History, Kindergarten has been learning about the make-up of their families and those in different countries. Did you know that in many Chinese villages, the grandparents live in the same house as the mum, dad and children, and that most families usually only have one child and no more than two? In Science, the students have started keeping their own daily weather chart where they are recording their morning and afternoon weather observations using drawings. Everyone is looking forward to presenting their item at the Kindergarten Assembly this week. Also, the students are very excited about their first “big school” excursion to the Hunter Valley Zoo on Tuesday 19th September. Again, thank you to all the adults who give up their time to assist with guided reading. Marina Kyriakou

CHESS COMPETITION Yesterday, Monday September 11th, our chess team travelled to Green Point Christian College in Gosford to participate in the Semi-Finals of The Interschool Chess Challenge 2017. Denman Public School qualified for the Semi-Finals by placing in the top three schools of a Local Heat this year. Each student competed in a total of seven games each. And …. The results are in:

Interschool Chess Challenge 2017

Ben 5 wins

Patrick 5 wins

Ashton 4 wins

Vincent 3 wins

What an outstanding achievement! A big thank you to our expert coaches Mr Sommerville and Mrs Druitt, who have put in a huge effort to prepare children for the tournament during lunchtimes. We are experiencing great success with chess this year thanks to the commitment of students to attend these practices in their own time.

DENMAN COMMUNITY CRACKER NIGHT This Saturday night September 16th, Denman Public School’s Hunter Dance Festival groups have been invited to participate in the Denman Community Cracker Night at the Denman Football Oval (new fields). This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our performances to the wider community. We extend a warm welcome to community members to enjoy two performances starting at 5.30pm.

STATE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Charli Bates will represent Denman Public School at the State Athletics Carnival in Sydney on October 18th to compete in the Junior Girls High Jump. At our school carnival, held at the end of July, Charli placed 1st in the event with a jump of 1.10m. This saw her break the 1993 school record by 1cm. At the Zone Athletics carnival in Singleton in early August, Charli placed 2nd in the Junior Girls High Jump and set a new record with a jump of 1.11m. On 1st September, Charli travelled to Glendale to participate in the Regional Athletics Carnival. She faced some tough competition, jumping against the best from the Hunter region. Charli came away in 1st place and smashed her previous record, clearing the bar at 1.20m. Charli says: ‘It was lots of fun and very exciting when I found out I got 1st place. It gets really hard the higher the bar goes’. All the staff, students and community of Denman Public School are very proud of Charli’s achievements and wish her all the best at the State Carnival next month.

CONGRATULATIONS We would like to congratulate Mrs Wendy Stair who has gained a permanent position at Denman Public School. Wendy has been a wonderful asset to DPS over the past 5 years and we are thrilled to continue this wonderful working relationship. Under the leadership of Mrs Stair, Denman Public School is currently implementing the LMBR system as part of the Department’s overhaul of financial and administrative systems.

CYBER SAFETY SESSIONS This term we have organised for Senior Constable Sheree Gray (Hunter Valley LAC Youth/ Crime Prevention Officer) to deliver Cyber Safety sessions to our Year 5 and 6 students. The sessions will take place on Tuesday September 19th in normal computer lesson time. Senior Constable Gray has also agreed to conduct a session for parents on this day at 1.00pm in the school library. These sessions will raise awareness about the dangers children can face when using the Internet, games and apps and outline some simple measures that we can take to decrease these dangers. They will also highlight the reason for age requirements with many online programs. The parent session is recommended for anyone who has a child who uses any sort of device that connects to the Internet, not just for parents of Year 5 and 6 students. Senior Constable Gray stipulates that it’s never too early to start learning about keeping your children safe when using the Internet.
