DAISY Award Recognizes Extraordinary Nurses

Memorial is blessed to have a wonderful team of associates who share our mission, vision and values. Isaac Mitchell (top), Daisy Ostrowicki, Herb Klishies, Luz Trash (l-r) are a few of our associates who shared their personal commitment to caring for patients and the reasons why they choose to work at Memorial through the Memorial starts with me campaign.

Memorial is pleased to partner with the DAISY Foundation to recognize the extraordinary difference nurses make in the lives of patients and co-workers. Nurses are chosen each month to receive this wonderful award that honors compassionate care.

A Memorial System Nurse of Excellence is selected from the nurse of excellence unit award winners each year during National Nurses Week. Whitney May, BSN, RN, BC, was named the 2013 Memorial Health Care System Nurse of Excellence. Whitney is a core charge nurse on 100 North, preceptor and mentor. She is the co-chair of Memorial’s Nurse Practice Council, has been instrumental in developing work teams on her nursing unit, and participates on hospital-wide shared governance councils including her unit’s council and the Nurse Professional Development and Recognition Council. As part of her recognition as the System Nurse of Excellence, Whitney attended the Magnet Conference in Orlando. Whitney advocates for patient safety and quality nursing care and for the recognition of nurses both on her unit and throughout Memorial Health Care System.

Nurses are an integral part of any hospital, and we count on them to take care of our needs when we have surgery, experience a cardiac event or undergo treatment for cancer. Today’s health care organizations face many challenges as traditional models of health care delivery adapt to the changing times. At Memorial it all comes back to our mission of creating healthier communities. For more than 60 years, Memorial has sustained an unwavering commitment to provide quality patient care regardless of challenges.

A few years ago, Memorial shifted much of its focus to improving nursing care at the bedside and began a concerted effort to achieve Magnet® status. Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Magnet recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice.

Hospitals that achieve Magnet status not only have proven themselves as quality patient care providers; they are able to attract and retain skilled and experienced nurses and allied clinical professionals. At Magnet facilities, low nurse-to-patient ratios help ensure that nurses have adequate time to give each patient the special care they deserve. Magnet designation is the gold standard by which the nursing profession is judged.

Patients and their families can rest assured that health systems that have achieved Magnet designation are consistently striving for a higher standard of patient-centered, quality care. Memorial plans to apply for Magnet status in the near future. e application and the process to achieve designation can be lengthy, but teams at Memorial have worked tirelessly to ensure that the necessary components are in place. e benefits to our patients, our community and our staff are profound.

Nursing Development Memorial nurses incorporate evidence-based best practices to provide the highest quality patient-centered care. Our nurses are rewarded at every level to encourage and recognize professional development.

Nursing Professional Career LadderMemorial’s professional career ladder encourages registered nurses to pursue professional growth with the option of staying at the bedside. e program provides advancement opportunities and monetary rewards while promoting job satisfaction and retention.

Nursing Shared GovernanceNursing shared governance councils give clinical nurses at Memorial a powerful voice in the development of policies, procedures and processes that are central to nursing professional practice and patient care. Nurse peer review, nurse professional development and recognition, clinical oversight, and nursing quality councils enhance the nursing program.

Professional Development Assistance ProgramsFull-time and part-time associates at Memorial are eligible to apply for tuition reimbursement. Certified nurses can also receive a yearly allowance to use toward professional seminars, professional organization fees, professional literature, or national board certification exams or renewals.
