29th September 2014

National Police Remembra nce Day 29 September 2014

2

History of National Police Remembrance DayEach year, 29 September holds a special significance for police throughout Australia,

New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands. It is a day for police

to pause and honour officers whose lives have been lost while performing their duty as a

police officer. This important day is also a time to remember police officers who have lost

their lives through illness or other circumstances.

National Police Remembrance Day is observed on the feast day for Saint Michael

the Archangel, Patron Saint of Police. St Michael is recognised as an archangel by the

Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths.

National Police Remembrance Day was first held on 29 September 1989, as a result of

a joint decision at the 1988 Australasia and South West Pacific Region Commissioners’

Conference.

NSW Police Force Wall of RemembranceIn February 1999, the Premier of New South Wales, The Hon Bob Carr MP, announced

the NSW State Government would fund the construction of a memorial to honour the

memory of police officers who died serving the NSW community.

On 5 December 1999, Mr Carr officially unveiled the Wall of Remembrance, which is

located on the eastern side of the NSW Art Gallery on Art Gallery Road, in Sydney’s

Domain.

The names of NSW Police Force officers who lost their lives while they were performing

police duties are etched in the memorial’s wall.

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah (32: 15-18)

Once more there will be poured on usthe spirit from above;then shall the wilderness be fertile land;and fertile land become forest. In the wilderness justice will come to liveand integrity in the fertile land;integrity will bring peace, justice give lasting security. My people will live in a peaceful home,in safe houses,in quiet dwellings.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John (15:12–16)

Jesus said to his disciples:‘This is my commandment: love one another, as I have loved you. A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends,

if you do what I command you. I shall not call you servants any more, because a servant does not know his master’s business; I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my Father. You did not choose me, no, I chose you; and I commissioned you to go out and to bear fruit, fruit that will last; and then the Father will give you anything you ask him in my name.’

CLOSING PRAYER AND BLESSINGPolice Chaplain

Father of mercies and God of all consolations, you pursue us with untiring love and dispel the shadow of death with the bright promise of immortality.

Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by dying has destroyed our death, and by rising, restored our life. Enable us to press forward in hope, through Christ our Lord. May the road rise to meet you,May the wind be always at your back,May the sun shine warm upon your face,May the rains fall soft upon your fields,And until we meet again,May God hold you in the palm of his hand. The RequiescatFor many years the Defence Forces of Australia and the Commonwealth of Nations

have honoured their deceased comrades by the playing of ‘The Last Post’ at funeral

services and memorial dedication ceremonies.

In 1987 the Director of Music, Police Band, Victoria, Inspector Don Jarrett was

tasked with composing an equivalent musical score that could be played at funerals

for members of the Victoria Police. Inspector Jarrett prepared a score titled ‘The

Requiescat’, pronounced phonetically

Re-queees-cat.

This piece of music was presented to the 1989 conference of Police Commissioners

of Australia South West Pacific Region. The conference agreed that this musical score

would be played at the inaugural National Remembrance Day for Australian police

officers killed on duty and would be played on all future occasions this ceremony was

held.

Further to this, it is now the policy of the NSW Police Force that ‘The Requiescat’

is to be played at funeral services of all police who have been killed on duty and at

memorial plaque dedication ceremonies held by the NSW Police Force.

God, we know it is from you that we have learnt what goodness and justice are.

You have given us the task of maintaining law and order in our community.

Strengthen us to meet the many challenges that we encounter in our daily work.

Give us courage and resolve to do our duty at all times.

Give us a respect and love for justice, that neither promise nor threat will ever make us depart from it.

May we, by your presence, give protection to those in danger, friendship to all, and be a role model to children and youth.

May we have your wisdom and truth when called upon to give advice.

Guide us, O God, in knowing when to enforce and when to relax the letter of the law.

Give us skill and insight to triumph over wrong and injustice.

Walk with us on our “beat” so that we might be examples of honesty, goodness and justice which it is our duty to maintain.

May all we do inspire confidence in the Police services and all their officers.

We make this prayer through you, the one true life-affirming God.

Amen
