As the real estate market continuesto be sluggish across the country, homeowners who might have

downsized or up-sized are choosinginstead to stay where they are and just givetheir homes a fresh look. One of the mosteffective and least expensive ways to dothat is to change the walls. But, in whatway? Paint? Fabric? Artwork? Wallpaper?Murals? Actually, today’s wallcoveringscan give the illusion of just about any ofthose options.

For the past 15 years or so, new homebuilders and remodelers have steeredclear of wallpaper — so much so that wall-paper became almost anathema. But, dec-orators have seen that trend turn aroundin 2011. The pendulum has swung, andpart of the revival of ornamentation is there-emergence of wallpaper. Consumerbehavior patterns, style trends and eco-nomic factors all contribute to homeown-ers embracing wallpaper again. And, withgood reason.

New technology allows wallpaperdesigners to unleash their creativitywith all kinds of two-dimensional tech-niques including glass beads on wallpa-per; wallpaper enhanced with sand, suede, raised inks, textural damasks, andyes, even flocking.

But, this is not your grandma’s wallpa-per. Flocking is back, but those velvety-tex-tured coverings come in many differentcolors with both simple and ornate pat-terns. Manufacturers are pairing themwith what the industry calls the“grounds,” paper that matches the back-ground upon which the flocks are laid. You can put “grounds” on the ceiling andlay the flocked paper on all four walls or dothree walls in the plain grounds and onewith flocking as an accent wall.

“We all remember the wallpaper grow-ing up that we learned to hate,” said PaulMontgomery, owner of Paul MontgomeryStudios, maker of hand-painted wallcov-erings. “But now, there are a lot of patternsthat do enhance an interior. Wallcoveringscan uplift and inspire and bring a senseof peace and tranquility to a room.”

and Murals Your Way (www.muralsyour-way.com) offer the unique option of creat-ing wall-sized murals from photographs— your own or those of a professional photographer from the manufacturer’scollection. Casart Coverings (www.casart-coverings.com) makes a removable, cus-tom, designer wallcovering that can bechanged almost as fast as you switch thelinens on your bed. And each decorativefinish can be custom matched to BenjaminMoore and Pantone colors. Removablewallcoverings provide great value to home-owners and renters.

Like comic book-style beach scenes? What about a vintage Porsche? These veryimages could be the backdrop to a favoriteroom in your house. “Wallcoverings are acost-effective way to get large-scale art onyour walls,” said Surface View co-ownerWayne Hemingway. “Technology is allow-ing the concept of wallcoverings to bepushed even further.”

Another new trend is fabric and wallpa-

per combos. You can use your choice ofwallpapers and then cover the room’schairs in an identical fabric. Some of thefreshest trends in wallcoverings can be agreat component in interior design.

“People are finally moving away fromjust a feature wall and are once again wall-papering two, three and four walls in aroom,” says David Klaus at Graham andBrown Wallpaper Company. “Fewer accentwalls and more fully papered rooms arecropping up in homes and magazinespreads as of late.”

According to the WallcoveringAssociation, wallcovering is a great imper-sonator. It can change the visual appear-ance of a room in many ways. Wallcoveringhelps make the most of a room’s strongpoints, while masking its weaker features. It can be used to draw attention to a fire-place focal-point wall by wrapping the fire-place facing with a strong pattern. Afocal-point wall can be created by using thesame strong pattern on any blank wall. All

it takes is a little imagination.Wallcoverings can brighten a dark room,

add character to a dull room, warm up aroom with no architectural features, createa cozy atmosphere, frame the room’s bestfeatures and reveal your personality morethan any other wall treatment. In addition, wallcoverings feature certain patterns suchas stripes and overall prints to perform opti-cal illusions that make rooms that ordinarilylook too long, too boxy or have low ceilingsappear more proportionate.

Walcoverings can also be used to addvalue to your home. They cover flaws inthe wall surface that paint can’t. They pro-tect the wall surface from marks, are anexcellent fast-fix for those selling their

home and offer a wide range of subtle pat-terns and colors to neutralize the interior to

fit anyone’s style. Retail studies show that atastefully decorated home can add a 10 to15 percent increase in property value.

Wallcoverings are a timeless decorat-ing product. As new styles emerge, wall-covering designers capture it, define it

and present it in a variety of colorchoices. With its ability to capture anystyle or color scheme, wallcoverings helpyou express your personality and style —whether your taste is contemporary, romantic, country or eclectic.

Here are a few wallpaper trends that youcan expect to see this fall and on into thenew year.

Printable wallpapers –Printable wall-papers are a perfect hybrid between dress-ing a wall with wallpaper and painting it.The idea of printable wallpapers is to allowthe homeowners to customize their ownwallpapers according to their taste. If thedesign trends change the next year, the wallcan change with it.

New technology allowswallpaper designers to

unleash their creativity withall kinds of two-dimensional

techniques.
