B luestoqe , too,was quarr ied in large amountsin UlsterC ounty, f ro m the sou thernslopesof the Catskill M ounta ins , beg inn ing in the 1830s, and as suc h was acommonbuild ing m aterial in this reg ion.Thebuilding was clearly conceived along utilit arian lin es, with min im al exterior architectural embellishm ent,w hich was largely provid ed for by thedivision of ba ys wi th verticalp iers and by the parap ets on th etwoprincipal b locks, the corbelling of w hichsuggest Romanesqueprecedents. Its structural syst em, com biningload-bearin g brickmasonry withlarge-sc ale wood ti m bers, w as characteristic of facto ry and warehouseconstruction in the era im media tely preced ingthe broad acce ptance of conc re te and steel. W eaving wasexecuted inthe north bloc kof th e building, withfinishingundertaken inthe south block; equ ipm ent, such asthe nine weav ing looms, was powered by the cen tra l power house .
