Advertised Prices for Specialty Crops at Major Retail Supermarket Outlets ending during the period of 03/09 to 03/211,2

Shoppers were able to keep more gold in their pots this week as retailers offered deals galore for Saint Patricks Day. Not surprisingly, cabbage, carrots, onions, and potatoes were showcased this week, often with corned beef and Irish beer. Asparagus, cucumbers, and tomatoes were also popular. Mini watermelons were more frequently advertised this week, hopefully heralding spring despite continuing winter weather in many places. Bakery and seasonal departments featured shamrock themed items to add to the St. Paddys day festivity.

Total ad numbers this week were 380,177, a 9% increase from last weeks 348,309. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 185,096 (49% of all ads), onions and potatoes 50,128 (13%), vegetables 138,802 (37%), herbs 2,466, and ornamentals 3,685. The number of ads for organic produce was 51,903, 13% of total ads.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit items this week included cantaloupes at 20% and white seedless grapes at 13%. Significant decreases included tangerines at 12% and avocados at 10%. Significant increases in price for onions and potatoes this week included only yellow onions at 24%; there were no significant decreases. Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included only baby cut carrots at 10%. Significant decreases included portabella mushrooms at 20%, green bell peppers at 19%, green beans at 14%, and yellow squash at 11%.
